Good statement and props for putting it out.
My only comment is.. .
"The culture of online gaming is changing, just as the notion of digital ownership did with music. If we donGÇÖt evolve our technology, our game design and our revenue model, then we risk obsolescence, and we just canGÇÖt allow that to happen to EVE or to our community.
P2W is not a one size fits all, sure you can get money from Vanity items.
But people treat WoT a P2W game as something to do when when not playing Eve, its a dead end game. I play it but I know I will be probably quitting it as soon as I get my Soviet tanks up to lthere final level, I certainly will not be putting more money into it after that., Eve has no dead end to it, its not really a level system like EQ was where you scramble tro hit level XX and then raid in order to stave off the boredom, Eve has achieved something the rest of the MMO world can but dream of open ended where even a new player can achieve thing (well, might need to look at turret tracking for the new intie pilot to survive well any more :) ).
Eve you benefit most from prolonged life in it, this culture is set apart from the attitude folks play WoT. Eve has a lot of loyalty, WoT is probably a lot more transient. If you want to get a revenue stream from a game usng P2W or micro (well semi micro) transactions, write it, but expect it to have compared to Eve a short life and a player base that will evaporate when the next new shiny micro transaction based game comes out, because it will.
Eve's subscription can be used s a selling point in itself, you are what you work for not what you pay for.

You are all being trolled. These guys are snickering around their boardroom table right now: "hey the idiots bought it! that'll keep the subscription money rolling in". Read the article. All he discussed is bringing back ship spinning and adding more ridiculously overpriced merchandise for you to spend your real money on. Not one word about the real problems with the game or fixing them other than 'we'll be looking at it, trust us'. We've heard that before.... |

Furb Killer wrote:Well two options: CCP has a non-******** PR person or he actually means it. I don't get this distinction.
During my military service I was authorized to write on some issues on behalf of our brigadier general. As long as I didn't overstep the boundary of the authority I was lent it didn't matter one bit whether I wrote and signed on his behalf, I wrote and he signed or he wrote and signed himself. The one time some new lieutenant tried the "the heck will I let a Private tell me what to do" route he got a (metaphorical) bloody nose in return very swiftly - after all it was not me (as a private) telling him what to do. The only case in which it would have mattered that I wrote some document/mail/made some phone call and not the general himself would have been if I had abused the trust he had placed in me.
Later I had an internship with a politician and wrote letters, drafts for speeches and an interpellation on his behalf. It didn't matter who wrote the words - he was the one taking responsibility for them with his face, his signature and his reputation. Sure, he never got to see some of the stuff I wrote on his behalf - but as long as what i wrote did accurately reflect his positions, opinions and personality I did basically not exist as a person. And if there had been any negative fallout "I have no idea what the people in my office are doing in my name" would have been an extremely embarrassing and ineffective attempt to steal his way out of the responsibility he took when lending us his signature.
What difference does it make whether Hilmar himself wrote these words or not? he signed them with his name and authorized them for publication.
"Don't pay any attention to this pile of rubbish that some aide or PR consultant wrote on my behalf and published under my name with my consent. It's not what I really think..." does not work as a cop out. |

I good point I totally forget that... so.. Yes... it hasnt the deep of EVE... but really right now. which game has it... (P.S. aybe that is a better advertiser than anything else. The point of WoT "more transient" is my feeling too... but it can be a positiv point when you havent so much time (and look just foir the quick relexing: see here P.S. Overlord tweak a little the first point was relax in general not directly fun^^).
So maybe like Sekar casal said:"Eve's subscription can be used s a selling point in itself, you are what you work for not what you pay for." I would at... the deep of EVE is a selling point too (and with the immersion and the new wiki even more). |

Sure they are right to be angry but they can still behave and also I wanna add in my opinion to all of you on the forum that got rely angry if u think u can do a better job than go ahead start making a new eve game that is superior, well I did not think you would u bloody hypocrites.
And they say wow players are immature well eve player sure showed they can be worse.
Next Time be more Mature eve community.
We were angry that CCP were ******* up the game that we love and pay for, that's justified. We had to take actions to get CCP to listen to us and sort their **** out, which now seems like they will be doing. Yes, you keep sucking CCP's **** no matter what they do, I won't stop you. What they did was more than a simple mistake and we had a right to be pissed off. We in no way acted like children and I challenge you to show me who actually did. We aren't all developers so that's why we play this game and don't go off making our own so you can shut the **** up about that.
I don't think you actually understand what maturity is and you should probally stop before you make an even bigger fool of yourself. Next time actually think before you type anything like this again. |

That blog has returned my respect for Hilmar. It takes some balls to come out publicly and admit such a massive failing, especially to the people who've been non-stop screaming that CCP's been on the wrong path. It's one of those "I told you so" moments that have come to pass. But he's finally gotten off his high horse and at least appears to be genuinely talking TO us rather than down at us. This is a necessary first step to rebuild the trust relationship between CCP management and the customer base.
However, let us not confound respect and trust. With that blog - assuming that it's genuine and not just well-crafted PR damage control - CCP (Hilmar in particular) have regained my respect. Trust however, they'll have to work for. As Hilmar said in both his blog and in his arrogant internal email that got leaked, we'll be seeing that they do, not what they say. And Hilmar had better damn well stick to his word this time, because we're at a very precarious place now. I'm sure there some bitter vets out there who have "heard it all" and their trust in CCP has been irreversibly damaged already. I fear another breach of trust between CCP and its customer base will basically completely destroy any trust and good faith the customer base may have left.
So let us go forward with cautious optimism and some hope (rather than faith) that CCP will stick to their "new vision" and truly make Eve a better game. |

Not backing off the great vision for EVE, but questioning the way to get there, I consider a very good move.
The doubt as to how and if CCP can and really wants to change is understandable. For all players who have been around -- and who are not working in bigger companies -- it may be hard to understand how a games publisher can repeatedly disregard player concern and how a company try repeatedly to force its own way onto its customers. But that is corporate business, I guess, where a big crowd of people follows at least as many personal agendas.
So many times already CCP bit off more than they could chew. "Excellence" as their corporate lead motive had repeatedly only reached the devs -- not the leadership. Still, I believe CCP Hellmar if he says that circumstances led him ( again ) to want his company to do more too fast than was reasonable. I believe him that he believed in the possibilities.
I applaude that he admits the mistakes he made rushing everyone in the company beyond their capacities, and neglecting taking us, the players, onto a common journey with him.
We still share the vision. So glad we may get back on track. Fan fest will be :awesome: . |

Not to derail this thread, but "%$#@ Mittens!" He has no place in this thread!.
All of us hate how Hilmar disregarded the thoughts of others while pushing for his own vision, well Mittens is exactly the same way (if not worse) and he has no place in thread!
Mittens is a disgrace to the CSM. And just like he said $%#& to players in other threads (Go research it people), I say it here to him.
Heck he doesn't even take care of his own people unless you are a somethingawful goon. (Go research it)
All of you who have not had experience dealing with him in game or in the forums may think this letter harsh but once you do your research and read his posts you will see what I am talking about. (recent Oxygen Isotope price increase scam - Mittens and Goons!)

Generally the man at top only apologises when,
A) The company is hemorrhaging/about to hemorrhage money due to his stubbornness
B) The company is hemorrhaging/about to hemorrhage his top staff due to his stubbornness
I donGÇÖt think he woke up one morning and found religion and realised the errors of his ways, I think its adapt or die time which makes the apology worthless imo.

Whether he decided to apologize because of the sudden realization of the error of his ways, or because of duress (i.e. bleeding membership subscriptions), I really commend Himlar for doing this. This apology has been seen by many (even many cynical) as not just a good step forward, but the culmination of the issues that have boiled over and exploded during the summer.
Now, as many have said here, with the refocus for the winter expansion, I am definitely looking forward to the future.
Thank you for the apology Hilmar.

I've been playing 3 years, only recently following closely, though. I am actually a refugee from Star Wars Galaxies (a sad tale). I hope this is what I see happen. I love EVE, and everything it's accomplished so far, and it's hard to watch the true veterans that are so jaded. I hope I get the opportunity to see these things happen. Regardless of what does happen, the letter alone took guts.

You should probably read this: Some Curves Aren't
Then read this: Reality Check
Then read this: Hilmar's letter to EVE
Then read this: Winter Expansion 2011
Yeah... that should all help catch you up to whether EVE may or may not be dying. The new Star Wars game looks like WoW with lightsabers so we can only pray CCP sorts their lives (and our game) out. Seleene's Sandbox - My Blog, where I say stuff. Follow Seleene on Twitter |

After viewing what Hilmar has said, I would hope that he fully intends to properly iterate Incarna in its complete form as a support project to what is coming in the Winter, so that player establishments get released as a bonus to FiS updates.
I would strongly encourage that. |
