Most of us have been there. You are home from work, the kids are finally in bed, and you have a planned night of endless spaceship mayhem ahead of you... or so you thought. As you settle down in your computer chair, you hear a low whine emanating from the kitchen... or is it the laundry room (I joke... I joke...).
"Honey.... Do you want to watch this movie with me? Come spend time with me."
Sometimes it's not a whine at all... it's something much... much worse.
"You get your ass in here and spend time with me, or I'll kick that damn triple screen in."
It's called wife aggro, and it's a serious problem. I'm currently in pre-production for the next High Drag podcast, and I need your stories... and tips... about your own wife / girlfriend / significant other aggro. The plan is to read the tips and stories on the podcast, and I will even throw in 100 million ISK to the winner of the best story (selected by the High Drag team).
If you wish to remain anonymous just say so in the message or post. Feel free to post your story in this thread, send an ingame mail to kyle yanowski, or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Been there done that, though I'd say the wife agro isnt' always the most serious agro...
Case in point, in the middle of fight, answering the phone and that way having to turn your back on the computer all the while your 4 year old son initiates self destruct on your shiny boat... |

my g/f aggros me every day, you learn to live with it. sometimes she sits here talking thinking i'm listening (shes doing it right now) and that seems to sate her, but most of the time she wants me to watch some buttshow like criminal minds or law and orders: SVU (or, "****" as i like to call it)
I usually yield to these demands because shes the only person alive that has sex with me, and sex is more important than one more forlorn hub, also I would like to think it will be around long after EVE, but my life is full of wishful thinking.

A lot of women believe watching TV programmes that she likes together is quality time
I disagree
If we do that then ill only grow to hate you and she will deserve it.
Spend time on EVE and then spend time doing what you both like anything else is a compromise that you are losing.
The only thing that my women asks me to do is keep my sleep routines consistant. I cant argue with that.
Just came back from a week in the mountains in a log cabin with no EVE and no TV. Had a great time. Lots of sex, food and scenery.

You reply with "Coming, light of my days!" and go and watch the movie. It's really that simple.
But if you absolutely do not want to choose between your significant other and a game (and it's not really a choice), your best bet is to get your significant other involved in the same game as you. That way you can have quality time together and still play games. This, pretty much.

That's not wife aggro - that's a straight out gank.
My wife used to give me a grief about my play time. We came to a compromise, of sorts. I spend a couple hours a night with her watching tv, or talking, or whatever, and in return, when I say the words "I have an op tonight" she leaves me alone to play.
Note that this only works when used sparingly. If you "have an op" every night, she's likely to get very very irritated.
@the guy who posted his friend's wife sold his computer: That would be grounds for divorce in my house, seeing as I use that computer to make money so she can spend it on the TV she wants me to come watch with her. (I love being a programmer. Oh uh, yes, I had to buy a new PC this year, and I use that for roughly 15% of my gross income. How much can I write off?) Bumping, leave it alone. |

Since I've been a gamer all my life, e.g. since the late 80s, my wife never knew me different than that. Though since we have two little ecm drones who can insta-jam your pc-target lock (= kids) my eve time - at least the quality eve time where I get to play for longer than 30 minutes - has very much diminished.
I have an unofficial agreement with my wife: one night a week belongs to eve, and only eve. Works quite ok... though I have to watch all that bullshit tv shows for the rest of the week with her (as long as I'm not on the macbook playing eve at the same time ;) The State will not fall. Set up a another bank account, transfer all your RL $ into it, next take the wife on a 3-day lavish experience including the Cinema, a Restaurant, a Bar (if your wife is over 21), followed by shopping then a drive out to a tourist place with another high-priced eatery.
The next week: Show your wife the bank account, claim trolls etc etc, played EVE bank now empty and DEMAND that you be left alone at the pc to track down the scammers that emptied the bank account.
Just before Christmas send all the money back and relish in the fact that you FOUGHT LONG AND HARD for a couple of days :)

For us, it's spouse aggro. Sometimes she gets me while I'm playing EVE, and sometimes I get her while she's playing Guild Wars 2. And, of course, there's a certain gleam in the eye that makes you want to dock up and log off ASAP.

I get "Wife Agro" too, but not in the usual sense.
My Wife Loves Eve online, But she has the Hand eye co-ordination of a over excited Tribble. I love playing eve, and i DO so frequently, but when i actually want to do something else and take a little break, I get no end of grief. If im not playing from dinner till bed time she pouts, moans and whines, so much so, it puts me off doing anything with her, nevermind Eve.
The last time this happend i said to her, "Look, you have been watching me play this for 6+ years. Why dont you actually take a shot and go Belt Ratting (lived in 0.0 Period basis at the time).
30 min later, As i finally Notice the distinctive Silence and that she might actually be ratting, She starts screaming at me, OMG OMG PIRATES !!!111 WHAT DO I DO?
By the time I pause watching "Cast Away" and get back over to the PC, It was too late. My character had lost his ship and been podded.
I say to her, "ahh dont worry about it. It happens. exciting wasn't it ?" And return to watching my movie. She was almost shaking, i thought it was an extreme over reaction too.
The next day i had a look at the Loss Mail. She had taken my shiney new Legion (2 weeks after they were added to eve) with its cargo hold full of the faction mods i had intended to use on it. and fitted it with 2 small lasers, 4 plates and 4 shield mods.
The Sanshas Wept.......
She hasn't been allowed near eve since.
P.S. This Character was made for her 6 years ago, but was adopted as my alt lol. |

I wasn't in eve at the time but I was playing DAoC when I got married. Pretty much had to stop playing games of any kind for 4 years. "He choose poorly" She turned out to be completely insane. I don't mean "well sure, all chicks are a bit crazy" crazy. I mean "Doctor's got a name for it" crazy. Always watch out for signs of crazy and never voluntarily date crazy, crazy cannot be fixed.
About two years in I picked up SWG (pre-cu,pre-nge, speeders had just been released.) OMFG!!! I could not have gotten more heat had I strangled the cat with my bare hands in front of her kids. She. Freaked. Out. Never mind I had a full time job as a DBA and was contracting another 15-20 hours each week programming java, she simply hated it when I wasn't working. And no, it wasn't because I wasn't spending enough time with her. The contracting I did from home and I would have willingly given it up.
I tried hard to figure out what she needed from me and in the course of that it came out that she had been diagnosed in the past as BPD. Eventually it turned to her lying, stealing and cheating. At that point I cut her loose. Even her own kids, teenagers at the time, wont have anything to do with her now. I am the one who gets called grandpa, gets called at births and goes to birthdays parties.
Aw well, that was the sad story of aggro that couldn't be avoided. But fortunately most women are not that kinda of crazy, they are just the "I don't understand her" crazy which really isn't crazy, just confusing. That, can be overcome. Really it boils down to learning what it is she needs. You need to take the time to learn what it is that works for your woman. Some like for you to do things that help them out. Some like it when you say nice things to them. Some like it when you give them things. Some like it when you touch them, not necessarily sexually, just holding hands or sitting right next to each other. Some like it when you simply spend time with them. but then you need to figure out how they like to spend that time. Some see spending time as talking. Some as doing something together. others just like for you to be near. You could be playing eve from your laptop as long as you did so from the couch next to her while she did something else. And chances are she will like all of these things to a certain degree but one of them really, really speaks to her. That's what you need to figure out.
The point is this. Different women need different things. And men are the same way. First, don't assume that because you like something that everybody likes that the best. Second don't assume that because your last girlfriend needed gifts that your current one does as well. Your current one might like a gift but because of the way she grew up might see things done, the hunnydos, as real love. The third point is that just because she likes it doesn't mean it pushes her buttons. No wife is going to hate it when you fix things around the house or when you give them something but it still might not be what she "wants" to hear, or feel.
The goal of relationship is not simply to figure out how to not **** her off. Is playing eve 2 or 3 hours a night the problem? probably not. You could be spending your time much worse. At the drinking, gambling, there is a lot you could be doing that wastes more money and takes up more time than Eve online. Eve is usually only the problem is that is what you happen to be doing when she feels like you are ignoring her and she will feel ignored if you don't figure out what it is she needs. Be proactive. Just like you probably had to be to get her to go out with you in the first place. Figure out what she needs from you and make sure she gets it. Yes, it is that simple. Not easy, but in principle, pretty simple. |
