While reading the thread entitled non warp-capable ships (https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=178157&find=unread) the following idea occured to me.
In-space deployable point defense platforms.
Imagine knowing you're heavily outnumbered; you know the enemy is waiting to drop a supercapital fleet on top of you and you can't go toe to toe, you need some kind of equiliser. This is where a deployable point defense structure would come in. It would be similar in function to a POS gun, although it would require manual operation (no automatic mode) by someone with the relevant skills to do so..
I see it working like this.
1. You're heavily outnumbered by capital ships. You need something to level the playing field.
2. The battle starts at a gate. You black-ops bridge in 3 or 4 covert haulers at range. One of which contains a deployable defense platform, which it launches and begins to anchor.
3. The platform has a 10,000 m3 fuel bay on it to be filled with strontium (hence the other industrials). As soon as it's above 75% it becomes invulnerable and ready to fire, although the strontium begins to be consumed at X rate each minute.
4. A pilot comes along in a command ship, with a particular high-slot module fitted, let's call it a "Tactical Network Processor" and assumes control over the module and fires a omgwtf beam somewhere on par with a doomsday device. Instantly emptying its fuel bay and making it vulnerable.
5. To become invulnerable again, and ready to fire, it will require 2 things. The first; more strontium, the second, a recharge. What recharges it I hear you say? Remote energy links, and a fair amount of them too. The entire fleet should be responsible for keeping this weapons system up and firing.
I think of this similar to old style battering rams in times gone past, huge contraptions constructed on the battlefield and brought to the city gates to siege them. Immobile for all but a short distance to bring them to their target (or in this case, hitting anything on grid).
I believe the invulnerability is necessary to guard against them just being blaped by the opposing super blob. Their fleets role is to hold the enemy super fleet in place, fighting off their support to allow HICs etc to hold them for long enough to get the defense platform anchored, onlined and firing.
They should not be hugely expensive, maybe 100m a unit. They will of course consume large amounts of either strontium or another fuel type and force multiple elements of a fleet to work together to be effective. If you want to take one of them down, you have to eliminate its support fleet, but you had best not plan on using a super blob to do it because they'll just kept being shot down by one or more of this weapon, provided enough support remains to recharge them.
The initial idea would be to force supers off the field, or destroy them.
I'm sure there are maybe other potential options too. Area of effect local cyno jammer strucuture maybe? 400km range, massive power requirements requiring at least part of the fleet to focus on supporting them. |

What's to stop the opposition from simply bringing their own platform? Then you have a super cap blob AND an over the top mega-gun platform to deal with. |

Limit what it can fire at to capitals / supercapitals. |

So an analog to sentry drones at the fighter/fighter bomber level?
That might be a bit difficult to balance, but it would be a cool thing. |

Hey, take a look on what CSM is asking for CCP to do related to POS in this Tread: New POS system ( Block Built - Starbasecraft)
I think that what you want is the possibility to jump a POS over a Super Capital fleet to at last have some thing able to tank it somewhat... or jump to a place a Forward Base strong enough to keep a Supercapital hotdrop away...
But keep in mind that a Structure this big and a Jump this size would cost allot.... Please read this! > New POS system ( Block Built - Starbasecraft) Please read this! >-á[Debate] - ISK SINK |

I do like the idea of jumping an OMGWTF armed-to-the-teeth starbase into the middle of the fight, but as usual, you end up with blob warfare. What with the construction and preparation of these starbases off-grid and more than likely many systems away, then large alliances can use them with impunity, and jumping in 10 towers each with 30 or 40 jammers on for example makes a fight ridiculous.
My idea requires *on battlefield* construction and coordination, and serves as a deterrent to supercap hot-drops as they will eventually be forced off field, preventing the i-win button. |
