(First post in years... o.O)
I'd like to make some comments and suggestions on the visuals in EvE, with a special emphasis on combat and ship explosions and damage. I'll also make some comparisons to the fairly old game Homeworld 2 (released in 2003).
The visuals in a game are a major contribution to the popularity of a game. EvE's visuals, in general, are stunning and pretty. However, EvE is very weak if you take a look at the details. But it's often those details that make you sit there in awe and fall in love with the game even more.
First of all, I'd like to take a look at the new ship explosions: they look okay from a distance (better than before), with the distortions around the explosions and all. But if you take a closer look (which happens a lot on autocannons and blasers), it appears really, really half-assed. The explosion starts and the ship just magically disappears without a trace inside the explosion, which looks ugly and doesn't "feel right".
But let's start with the suggestions for explosions on small things: Frigates. Anyone who played Homeworld 2 will remember what happened if one of the small fries got destroyed: the whole ship would start burning, drift off-course and finally explode. On larger ships, you'd first see smaller explosions all over the ship, seeing some debris getting tossed into space, hear the sound of metal bending and crunching before finally, it'd explode. It contributed a great deal to the SciFi-feeling of the game.
What I would simply love to see in EvE is that upon weapons fire on shields, the shields would, depending on the remaining strength of the shield, "glow" around the area of impact, with increasing distortions as the shield grows weaker. Upon fire on armor, it'd be awesome if impacts leave visible damage on the armor until it gets repaired. On hull damage, it'd be nice if various parts of the ship would start to burn and possibly get tossed into space until when the ship is finally destroyed, it breaks apart and explodes, with debris flying away from the explosion. Just don't make it go "poof gone".
Also, there are not all that many locations on a ship where weapons fire will arrive. This is especially visible if you use lasers. It wouldn't feel that awkward if the gunfire would move around a little bit on the target ship.
