Jokes aside, then 5 and 6 Dec 2012 mark the 5 year anniversary of the Trinity expansion and the boot.ini incident. It is in hindsight one of the more hilarious bugs in the gaming industry. I hope you have all recovered and forgive us. I can't say that "hilarious" is the correct word considering that there were quite a few people who's PC's got hosed that day. Some people clever enough to fix the issue quickly...others would have had to format and reinstall their OS if they didn't know hot to properly fix that problem. Just saying...choice of words may not have been the best in this case. Glad you guys learned your lesson and it has not happened again though. It may not have been hilarious at the time, but it certainly is now. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

No... I get that part, I was asking about how one would recover from having the boot.ini file deleted. If Windows didn't recover on its own (which it did in the vast majority of cases) then you needed an install disk and to reinstall on top of the existing install to reinstate the boot.ini. This did preserve settings and installed software in most cases. There were exceptional cases with special setups where a full reinstall was required or other methods were required (such as connecting the hard disk to another computer and re-creating the boot.ini file by hand). Oh, by the way, there's also item called "Key Pass to Open the Door blueprint". Anyone know yet where you can find one of those? All the other materials seem to be available on market except for "Villard wheel"... |

Do you realise we have war memorials to remember the people whose lives we frittered away pursuing whatever goals were important at the time? We don't have war memorials to celebrate the glory of blowing the crap out of whoever was our enemy at the time.
Remembering the boot.ini incident in this way is just CCP reminding themselves that QA is important, with a bunch of folks in the office thinking, "well, it's okay to take risks today and stretch to reach my goals because nothing I do will be as massive a mess-up as that was."

(I hope it's not a terrible one) A layered chocolate cake with buttercream covered with fondant.

Years ago the industry tutorial had you make a perpetual motion machine, and that was one of the needed materials. Yeah, I still remember it clearly when I was looking at its installation process. I did see boot.ini and I immediately knew it wasn't good. :)
Even a few months before that, I saw the "boot.ini" in eve folder, and I was wondering why CCP put up a file name as the same as the windows one. I guess I shoulda voiced out to CCP back then. :s |
