Right now I am tooling around in a Magnate and enjoying exploring. I can pretty much only do Radar and Magnometric sites though because I don't think I can do any of the military ones with the Mag.
It seems like it will be awhile before I can step up to an Arb, so I was thinking a Dragoon might be a good practice ship.
Do you think I could handle some of the easier combat sites in the Dragoon?
I would like to mix it up a bit because sometimes it would just be nice to do something during those long dry spells when you can't seem to find anything but the combat sites.
Another thing I was considering was training up and just throwing a prototype cloak on the Mag and heading for low sec. I ducked in there there the other day and got lucky with a nice Radar site.
Thanks. |

The Dragoon isn't really outfitted to be a damage-dealing ship, but I think it would definitely work. A better option may be the Coercer, since it does more damage and you don't have to worry about drones. With a proper fit, those new Exploration frigates should handle anything up to 2/10. We have a discussion going on about them over in Ships and Modules. Handy link HERE. Quality Assurance RECRUITING OPEN https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=176314&find=unread |

Thanks for the input and the link guys, I will head over. I love my coercer for mission running. Also, I think it is just really cool looking. I didn't train all that far in gunnery however and switched to drones for the Magnate and would like to stay on that track since I am hoping to get into an Arbitrator which is also a Drone boat.
Thanks again and am going to take a look at that discussion :). |

For more drone fun, you can train Gallente Frigate 3 (or higher) to get access to the Tristan (5-drone frigate) and Algos (new drone specialized destroyer). Rifterlings - small gang frigate PvP - low/nullsec operations, newbie-friendly, free ship program; Join today! www.rifterlings.com

Err Wrong! With it's ability to use missiles, beams and spam out drones it actually has an evil ability to push out DPS. However, it is a tad fragile, but I am finding that with an Armour Repper and AB/MWD for a speed tank it holds up well to all but the biggest High SEC explo sites.
However, it's the sort of ship that when things do go wrong, it will go wrong damned fast. A good ship that takes me back to the pre nerf Succubus/Phantasm days (Origanally they were missle and beam) |

I'd be curious to know what kind of fit you are using.
I put this together for under 2.5 M Isk and it is fine for me now given my low SP when it comes to fitting. I still only have about 450k SP.
Dragoon
High
Dual Modal Light Laser I x 3 E5 Prototype Energy Vampire Core Probe Launcher I Salvager I
Mid
1MN Afterburner I Codebreaker I
Low
Small Armor Repairer I Drone Damage Amplifier I Basic Energized EM Membrane Thermic Plating I
Rig
Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I x 2
Drone Bay
Acolyte I x 4 Hobgoblin I x 4
Ammo Infrared S X Ray S
I usually am going up against Sansha because of being around Amarr, so I tried to tailor my resists accordingly. No extra mid for an analyzer but I keep it in the Cargo hold in case I run across a Mag site. I usually try to keep stuff at range, but I have the leecher for stuff that gets up close. Not the best, but I'm thinking its good practice for an Arbitrator.
I'm going to start dipping my toe into High Sec with stripped down Magnates that I can put together for under 1 Mil Isk. Hopefully I can add a cloak to that fit eventually.

The Arbitrator was possibly the best Amarr exploration ship up until the latest patch. Before, one could easily fit a probe launcher, salvager, codebreaker and decryptor et al and still have enough room for a decent combat fitting that would allow you to help your drones in handling any pesky guards that came between you and your prizes.
These days, however, not so much, as the new AI and all have rendered all drone ships irrelevant to any serious gameplay attempts. Instead I would suggest working with a team-mate. The first person should fly your basic exploration frigate for finding the sites so outfit them with your probe launcher and specialty electronics. Then have a friend standing by in a good cruiser (or whatever is appropriate) to clean out the guards so that you can then work the site in peace & safety. EvE Forum Bingo |

That's some hyperbole. Droneboats are fine but you can't use them in lazy idiot mode anymore.

Currently I am running the following set up with my Dragoon
Highs 3 x Light Missile Launcher II 1 x Drone Link Augmentor I Mids 1 x 1Mn MWD II 1 x Drone Navigation Computer I Lows 1 x Small Armour Repairere II 1 x Drone Damage Amplifier I 1 x Ballistic Control System II Co-Processor II Rigs 2 x Small Processor Overclocking Unit I
It is still a 'work in progress'. It's basic defence is based on a 'speed tank', which for me is great against the Blood Raiders which are my local flavour of NPC rats. You may have to be carefull against Sansha because as I remember, there are at least two Sansha High Sec exploration sites which have 'webbers' in them. In which case you need to either ID and kill the webbers first, or get the hell out of Dodge and come back with a more traditional Armour tank.
Because of the speed tank, I have just dropped the two Small Focused Pulse Laser II's as they were hitting squat, and that's with Max having over 10 mil skill points in gunnery. However, I have also been able to drop the DCM II as it's just not getting hit once I lite up the MWD.
The main issue, as you may see by my set up is that the ship is CPU lite and has needed a lot of upgrading to squeeze on the mods I needed. But it works for me now and I love the type. I usually do my exploration with a Legion and only got the Dragoon as a 'fill in' to get into some of the Exploration Sites, such as the Haunted Shipyeard, which I could not get the Legion into. But it has quickly changed from a back-up ship to one I am using a lot, and one that I will also use for PvP. I have been looking at getting involved with faction warfare, or doing patrols around High Sec looking for those bad boys, and girls with flashy things that let me shoot at them. I tell you, I can see that a small fast fleet of Coercers and Dragoons coul dbe evil on a PvP battlefield.
The main comment about your set up, is that I would suggest that you drop your guns and switch to missiles, especially against Sansha which use a lot of tracking disrupters. For PvE I would also drop the Nos. PvE involves killing lots of little things fast so you are not going to gain anything. Also, if I remember right, unless things have changed, NPC's cheat and don't get hit by the negative effect of being Noss'ed or Neuted.
If you need anymore thoughts, feelings or ideas please feel free to drop me a line in-game.
Oh yes, one final thing, you will see a lot of "Drone ships are broken since Retribution came in". Since Retribution came in I have not lost a single drone to NPC combat. Yes, you have to manage them, pull one back into the bay and launch a fresh drone if it's been hit hard on. I also carry a couple of armour repping drones to patch up any 'battered puppies' after the fight ( I live out of a POS so can't do in-station repairs) but drones are still a viable weapon, but a weapon you have to use, not just launch and forget. |
