Well, mainly Iceland...
I just have a few questions I'm hoping to get a few answers to...
Average cost of food/beer... What cellphone provider is recommended, and what SIM card type do they use? (regular/mini/micro) I can look up the rates online and etc... The best pubs/restaurants? Any good museums/art displays etc etc... Public transportation/rates, and/or good car rental places?
Or anywhere else that would seem too to visit/explore?
Obvious alt is obvious... |

Reykjavik is on the expensive side for food and drink, comparable to London and other big cities. You can find reasonable prices at a few places and deals like 2 for 1 on beers at various times. Basically there is one main street where you will find a whole selection of bars, from sports bars, live music, cosy, rock bars, fancy shirt and shoes type bars etc.
I will try to poke some people to tell you more about the bus service, all I know is that there is one.
You might like to have a look around this site and others to get an idea of things you might like to do while you are here - http://www.visitreykjavik.is/
If you are only staying for a few days during FanFest then I would suggest not to over-plan your time here. You will find that there are players meeting up for drinks on the days before, the Symphony will be playing also before the first official day of FF, and there are a lot of events such as the pub crawl and the Blue Lagoon the day after.
Hope at least some of this is helpful, and look forward to seeing you in a few short months! Presenter: EVE TV, Game Master, tea enthusiast. |

The way I understand it, you have a few days before fanfest if you take icelandair. I am still trying to figure out myself why fanfest is only listed as lasting 2 days. Xenuria CSM 8 |

I think I used a Siminn prepaid SIM card last time I was there. I just bought one at the airport with the icelandic equivalent of 10 euros worth of credit on it. Well worth it when I was there for 9 days imo.

You can buy a pre-paid sim card on Icelandair flights I believe, however a lot of people have issues with phones being locked to certain providers depending on where you are coming from. Most common providers are Vodafone and Siminn but there are likely others.
Check this out http://www.vodafone.is/en
I would recommend that you look into the extras that are available around FanFest such as the Golden Circle tour of the most popular geological stuff, you can go to where the continents meet and all that, it should be pretty good.
http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/events/goldencircle
Also if you don't feel like doing the Blue Lagoon hangover party I would suggest doing it on the trip back to the airport. Leave the hotel a couple of hours early, case stays on the bus while you take a dip and then head on to the airport.
I am not a good tour guide since I rarely go outside the city, it's just so pretty right here!
And no, I got a little overexcited but didn't want to go very silly on the dress front so skipped the wedding dress :P Presenter: EVE TV, Game Master, tea enthusiast. |

There can be a few different options offered by the airlines and hotels, also people can of course tailor make their own trip. FanFest itself is 3 days of presentations and events at Harpa, the fabulous new venue, with some extra stuff added in the days surrounding it. Presenter: EVE TV, Game Master, tea enthusiast. |

Thankfully my cell is supported with "regional" fee's so that will be good, staying a few days extra myself and got a great deal for a car the entire stay so gonna be a really nice visit. As for visits, I remember Blue Lagoon from last few times, great place def a "must", also really excited to check out the geyser(sp?) and other national parks.

A question/concern that my alliance mate made was if you have an early flight on the last day (dropped off at the airport after the Blue Lagoon). Where do you keep your luggage? Do they have lockers or some sort of storrage for those? |

the lockers are odd shaped, fairly small and a free for all. i usually end up sharing with mates, and its a struggle to get 4 backpacks in. The golden circle event is very nice but it is for tourists. I mean you go to the geysers you stay there for 20 minutes then you go to some waterfall
One day you will go to Gullfoss a F*cking amazing waterfall. The tour to the volcano area / glacier with those jeeps was amazing, also Seljalandsfoss waterfall was beautiful.
I believe if you have some friends and spare time you should rent a car and take the safe route.
The whale watch **** is nice if you can handle those waters.
If you want some local food you will the tour guide very handy, check out whale, catfish and of course rot shark.
I liked the Solon restaurant ( http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g189970-d804184-Reviews-Solon-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html ) very much.
Do not forget to taste Brenniv+¡n ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenniv%C3%ADn ) with the fantastic taste.
You can find some bus tours if you want to search the country on your own (http://www.re.is/IcelandOnYourOwn/ )
If you want to move inside the Reykjavik with a bus check out ( http://www.straeto.is/english/live-bus-map/ ) and remember that, from my experience, the bus are always in time.
*Buy from the BSI a ticket for a week.
I don't know if I'm forgetting something but I believe other ppl will help you finding your way to the Fanfest. Thanks in advance. |

Ok so this will be my first fanfest and first time in Iceland. I've been busy reading and getting excited about the country, the fanfest and the various events planned around it for the last couple of days. I'm just curious about the blue lagoon event. Looks like a wonderful experience and I don't want to miss it. The thing is, on the fanfest page it says the bus will make a stop at the airport after the event for those who have flights in the afternoon, but as far as I can see, there are no afternoon flights to any destination in Europe! All of Icelandair flights seem to be around 7-8 in the morning. Which means I'll be spending one more day in Reykjavik and pay for one more night of accomodation on top of the 80 USD. Do you guys think it's really worth it?
Also I'm really jealous about the SOE participants :) I mean it does have a few places common with the golden circle, but still, the latter seems to be a bit rushed and too "touristic" as said in a post above. Can anyone who took the tour before comment on that? |

Do you guys think it's really worth it? Well, I went to the lagoon after my first fanfest and it was absolutely fantastic. It's just something you have to do when you go to Iceland, and you won't be disappointed.
That said, I haven't done it again because, frankly, to me it was one of those "this was great and I'm so glad I did it, but once is enough" experiences. However, I still stay the extra day because I too have to take one of those dreadful morning flights. That's awful any day, but Sunday is right out.
So there you have another reason to stay if you feel you can afford it, and while you're there you might as well do the lagoon.
And yeah, the golden circle thing is indeed pretty rushed - it's called express for a reason. (At some point I have to take a proper holiday in Iceland, rather than cramming in a few things around fanfest like I do now. It's quite a country...) Bored? In need of ISK? Know how to draw? Yeah I was thinking the same, it's obvious you can't fit everything around fanfest. I need to plan a separate trip sometime. "Time" here is the keyword though :/ I wish fanfest could be a few weeks later, a lot more airline companies have scheduled flights to Iceland after May.. Anyway thanks for the info. |

Flying home on the morning after the saturday night party is the most terrible of terrible ideas since you either have to skip most of the fun and go to bed early, or negotiate the airport and flight sleepless and half-drunk and wanting to die. Stay out drinking on Saturday until 5am, use the Sunday and the blue lagoon trip to recover, fly home Monday.

As in, apply my Pacing IV skill to drink as much as I want on Saturday, recover by strolling about town, eating and napping on Sunday and be ready for a 3h flight + 4h drive on Monday.
Seriously folks, if you're the kind of person who don't mind a drop to drink; don't go home on Sunday morning. Bored? In need of ISK? Know how to draw? Design me a T-shirt! |

Something to know about the 7.30am flight on the sunday:
You'll want to check in 2 hours early for it (standard check in time). And it's a 45 minute bus ride to the airport.
(look at fly bus+. makes it simple)

Thank you! 1. the tickets are identified at the desk by player name. if the ticketing system lets you buy two, then you probably can bring a friend with no account. otherwise, roll a trial account and buy tickets i guess. Id file a petition and ask a gm. 2. on the day. the earlybird special either has ended or will end soon though. the final price is around $100us. 3. i dont follow, please restate the question.
