So I got my ship ready to fly (well, with the cheap stuff anyhow) and I went out looking for people to shoot at me. I figured i'd make it a goal to go wander around before breakfast or bed and find someone to blow my ship up while I can still buy a new one with one trip in a Venture.
But i'm having a hard time finding anyone! I go out to low-sec, in systems with people in them. I see them on local, I see them on the scanner.. I don't see them at belts or in stations though, so I figure they're sneaking around at safe spots like I am (oops) and so I can't find them.
Of course everybody in the starter corp is terrified of low security space so they aren't out there either. I keep hearing that there's nothing valuable enough to make them risk it.
So all I saw was "nothing nothing nothing... terrifying assault frigate on a gate that i'm pretty sure I can't take in my dinky Atron on their way somewhere so I don't attack them.. nothing nothing nothing.. lots of people i can't find.. more nothing.." and I never actually got to get blown up. I'm at the verge of taking a trip through Syndicate, just because I figure at least that way i'd get to go "ooh look, bubble" before getting vaporized by a battleship.
Any tips? |

FW is also Low-sec based, so you might want to look into that.

Finding fights in lowsec can be a patience game, especially when you are flying solo with low skills. Keep it up, and you will find targets. Don't be afraid to take tough fights and lose. Your best bet is to find a few friends who have the same interest, so you can gang up on ships bigger than your own. |

It's a good attitude to have, but if you get bored of looking for people, and/or don't want to join Faction Warfare (which is mostly lowsec, I think), RvB is definitely PVP on tap. Just this morning, I had five minutes before work and went out to lose a frigate (because I'm bad). ;) "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. OP, take a look at your map. Notice the different filters. Flick through them a bit and notice you can get lots of data on where stuff happens. Ships and pods killed in the last hours, etc. The lay of the land is very important in finding targets. Some systems are "crossroads" that have many escape routes. Others are "pipes", with only two exits, and others are "dead ends", having only one gate. If you ever go gatecrashing in nullsec, use a lowsec entry point. They are generally less overcamped and will probably lead to more interesting situations then running into a hisec/nullsec permacamp.
Secondly, get out of your starter corp ASAP. It's pvp poison. You'll see why later. Get into a group that does the things you wanna do. I can't and won't recruit in GD, but you are welcome to have a chat with me ingame. There are many small groups having a small home or home-away-from-home in lowsec and most importantly, intel on other people living there. You might have difficulty at first finding a group that's really to your liking, but in general lowsec corps aren't that hardcore on security and aren't that hard to get into. Not being a douche and having a decent microphone go a long way.
D-scan. Master the d-scanner and learn to interpret it's readout well. Know it's range and how to hide and show yourself on other people's scanners. Set your tracking position to the exact center of your screen, click celestials in overview and scan them down instantly. And have patience, Eve isn't about instant gratification pew pew and will test your patience in many many ways. On the other hand, once you do start living in lowsec you'll make friends and enemies there. Both increase you chances of getting into fights frequently. |

You are looking for 1v1 as a new player, you will get tired of getting smoked. EVE isn't entirely 1v1 friendly for vets let alone new players. FW was suggested, and I agree Faction Wars is probably the ideal place to start if you want to pvp early on. Only downside is you will mess up faction standing for opposing sides: Amarr + Caldari Vs. Gallente + Minmatar... though you can join any faction. Otherwise you might want to pick up tackling skills/ship and find a corp that'll recruit you. |

Then pick a spot and stay there. The stuff that happens in that system over the course of time will be where your fights come from so pick a place with the kind of targets you want. (Mission/plex ganks, hauler bottlenecks, general belt pew pew, etc).
Train an alt that can fly a crappy hauler to move stuff in and out with the cloaky warp trick. At least if it does get ganked it won't show on your record and make you a bigger target than you probably want to be right now. |

Hi OP, here are some suggestions you could consider if you're having difficulties finding fights in lowsec.
1. Rancer/Amamake: Rancer is not really conducive to finding fights, being as the residents, the united, are gatecamping pirates, which means less frigate pewpew more smartbombing BS. However, the surrounding systems have occasional targets as people pop in from the nearby trade hub, Hek. Amamake top belt used to be pretty hectic, but I'm not sure what it's like now. The systems surrounding it are quite target rich, but it may be hard to find frigate fights unless you request for 1 (and it's honored).
2. Pick a roaming route. One approach is to choose a route for roaming, say, 10-15 jumps preferably circular so you end up near-ish where you started. If the route you picked seems quite quiet, then look for a new one.
3. Target selection. As another poster mentioned, you have to decide what you're going to shoot. PVPers/pirates/carebears in low/FW'ers etc. This is likely to depend on the lowsec system you base yourself out of. Which brings me to my next point...
4. Pick a decent home system. The system you base out of will likely determine what targets are in your surrounding systems. If you have a PVE alt to sustain yourself, then you can pick any system you like (again depending on what targets you want). If you play mainly on one account, it may be better to pick somewhere relatively quiet (but not dead) with decent mission agents so you can run a couple when you're bored or need a quick injection of isk. Certain constellations may also have better exploration sites, but I'm not too sure if that's still true. By living near a bunch of mission agents, you get to probe down mission runners as well (bear in mind they may be in battleships), or if there are lots of explorers, you could set up traps with pre-probed sites etc.
5. Failing the above, just pop into a moderately populated lowsec system and ask for a 1v1 in local.
But most importantly, DO LEAVE THE STARTER CORP, as someone else mentioned, it's PVP poison if you stay in there too long. A good corp to join would be one near your lowsec home base with similar play time to yours. Don't worry about SP limits for now, most corps will take a new player with decent attitude and willingness to learn.

If your looking for solo PvP in low sec, either join FW or fly around FW space warping to the Novice plexes. You will only find T1 Frigates (including faction frigates) inside these plexes and many will be solo and up for a fight against an Atron. While you will almost certainly lose the first few fights you won't be insta popped and will learn from them. When you are master the opposition in Novice plexes, move onto Small plexes which are limited to Dessies and T2 Frigates, down. |

If you're going to be solo instead of in a corp, join FW. The FW chat will provide you some of the functions of a corp without having to deal with all the social interaction stuff, and staying within the areas involved in the war will ensure that there are people around for you to shoot on a regular basis.
If you'd like the detailed intel and organized fights a low-sec corp can provide but still hate people, try RvB. Fights are incredibly easy to come by and fleets are continually being organized, it's essentially FW on training wheels. This is the only option that doesn't really require patience.
If you want to _win_ fights in low-sec, join a pirate corp. They pick on weaker targets and even when they don't they tend to outnumber them. Plus, the usual corp benefits of defined scouts, fleets, etc.
If you're going to just be solo... well, mostly get used to waiting. Without the focusing effect of the FW objectives and the RvB fleet duels, and without the intelligence of corp scouts in pirate corps, you're going to have to hunt people down with probes and d-scan, or invest much more heavily in a bigger, better ship to try to catch people on gates. When people see you coming in a cheap ship and it's an even match or worse for them, they're going to leave. They have, after all, no incentive to fight you, particularly.
You can also try just going to the FW area solo and camping some objectives, but when nobody shows up you'll just have wasted your time, whereas if you're in FW and nobody shows up you'll have gained some LP. Also, people frequently take objectives in small gangs, which probably won't end terribly well for you solo. |

Random people won't give you intel (or at least nothing that you should trust).
If you want proper intel you have to at least fly with people you can trust and who trust you. Usually that means being in the same corp or alliance, but it can also be just a group of friends sharing a combined channel where they chat / provide intel... To get to know the locals.
You could talk with them (Usually with intel people mean "tell me what is on the other side of the gate" and that kind of stuff).
You can also click them in local and look at the corp. Most corps have a public channel for general talks and recruitment. It keeps local clear (people tend to be very very careful with what to put in local, cause they might not know that 3rd guy there and don't want to give away certain info).
And people hate the New Player NPC corp (aka the Schools) because they are filled with alts and people who want to play EVE risk free (given there are a few exceptions, but those are limited). When ever they see or hear the word PvP, they dock up, log off and hide in the basement... Old look Corporation recruitment thread Corporation Website |

Starter corps, and NPC corps in general, are bad for PvP mainly because they are not really corps at all. They are sort of like non-corps that you get stuck in by default when you are not in a real corp. Because they cannot be wardec-ed, people sometimes stick their hauler alts and mining alts in them to escape from or to avoid wars. Mainly though, they are filled with new players, inactive accounts, and antisocial people who are trying to play EVE as a one player game.
There are some things you can get out of a player corp that you never will in a starter corp, when it comes to learning how to find fights and learn to PvP.
1. Intel network. If you have corpmates in the same general part of space, you can share information. This is much more efficient than trying to figure everything out by yourself.
2. Fleetmates. In a corp that does PvP, usually there will be somebody else around you you can team up with. Even if you want to get out there and fight solo, it is nice to have backup you can call on should you find a need for it.
3. Ship replacement. Many corps offer some form of this for PvP losses. Less time grinding rocks in your Venture to fund your PvP habit.
4. Training and instruction. Even corps that aren't billed as training corps will often have guys hanging around in comms whose brains you can pick.
This is just off the top of my head, not an exhaustive list. The point is that it is just way easier and more fun to PvP in a real corporation than in an NPC corp Join the Revolutionary Front and liberate New Eden from it's stuff.
