Something I'm doing wrong here?
95% of sites I scan down are wormholes.
The other 5% are usually just pirate bases of some kind.
Is there something I"m missing for scanning down more unique sites with more interesting rewards?
Wormholes are neat and all, but as a new player...would be suicide to enter. |

Look for magnetometric and radar sites.
There is a lot of competition for them in hisec though.
They are easy to identify: with one core probe (or deep space) at max range, sort from weakest to strongest signal strength. Good sites are always small, and wormholes are almost always large. If you cannot cover the system with one probe, use multiple probes but only activate one at a time.

I don't understand. I'd like to find those sites. I never do, all I find are wormholes.
Deep space probes? I have combat probes, but I find them to be almost useless. I understand they are for tracking down other ships but I"m not fast enough to make any use out of them.
How do you pick out mag and radar sites?

Way too much competition to find anything in hisec. |

Go to lowsec. The sites are abundant and offer better rewards than those in hisec. Lowsec is not the swift and violent death you think it is - in fact there are lots of empty systems. You'll probably need something hardier than your exploration frigate to run the sites however, a battlecruiser of your choice (when and not before your skills are good enough) will do the job. You should still take the frigate with you however, as its bonuses to scanning are super useful. All you need to do once you get the site to 100% in your frigate is to right click and bookmark it, then go back to it in your BC.
Note that lowsec can be dangerous. Use the map (or dotlan) to check how many people are in the system and how many people have been killed on the hisec-lowsec borders. |

I did, I just don't have my skills high enough for that yet. Thank you for the information though.

How do you keep from getting blown up while you're scanning? Should I just enter and burn off of the gate in a random direction? |

I know a hi sec area where you have better chances of finding what you are looking for. But i'm not sharing it because it's my little secret and because you said that wormholes are a suicide for new players.
Travel and explore, discover the things by yourself and it will be a hundred of times more rewarding, even if the loot is pure crap.
Obviously if you are scanning in Crux or any other similar constellation highly populated by rock suckers and hi sec warriors it will be very hard for you to find radar and mag sites.

I'll just search on my name and combat probe...
