Yes, I'm posting on an alt, and I would prefer to keep it that way as I don't want my current corporation and alliance dragged into this.
I would like a Dev or GM's response to this issue, because it's one that we have been having with this particular CEO. Recently, my previous corporation and alliance joined a war against my alliance. The CEO of the WT alliance has a history of if not being mentally unstable, then violent and petulant enough that he is very likely to act on his impulses.
Today, the CEO of the alliance we are at war with was talking on Ventrilo with his corpmates. One of them runs a LiveStream that he has running often enough. The CEO of the WTs has been upset because he views the current corporation as "stabbing him in the back" as he puts it. Most of us are for one reason or another no longer in his corporation because we either can't stand him, or because we just don't want to hear him whine.
On the Ventrilo (which was captured by the LiveStream), he mentioned our CEO by name. He then said that he had "stopped by his house" and that he had intended to beat our CEO to a pulp. He even claimed that he had a baseball bat in his car when he had driven to our CEO's house, and he knows where our CEO lives. Naturally, considering we all thought this was a very likely action given his mental instability, our first reactions were to call our CEO to make sure he was okay. Thankfully he had been out doing last minute Christmas shopping with his wife and daughter, so he couldn't say if the guy had shown up or not. Either way, the threat was very real, and we didn't get to hear much more before the CEO demanded the player stop the LiveStream.
Understanding that CCP has no real options when it comes to Ventrilo or other VOIP programs, what is CCP's take on real-life threats made against players of their game? |

First, any realistic threat of that nature needs to be reported to the police. CCP ain't gonna protect nobody.
Second, since the threats didn't take place within a CCP related product or environment, there wouldn't be much they would likely do except advise to block said individual. Any ingame threats made can be properly petitioned.
Third, addressing CCP directly needs to be done via petition, not via General Discussion. This is literally one of the worst places to post about it, except maybe in a forum section that never sees the light of day. Lestatra: Eve is now fully committed to pvp . |

Take the voice comm to the FBI cybercrime division. This goes well beyond the reach of CCP's hand and should be put in the hands of the authorities. I also recommend your CEO take a more defensive posture from now on if someone's going to go to THIS extent. There is a line that has been badly and permanently crossed. If i were in the threatener's corp i'd leave...no I'D RUN.
Threats like this have no place in this game nor should they. And had someone made such a threat and done such a thing towards myself? They'd be staring down the barrel of a twelve gauge locked and loaded. |

OK STOP. First things first, This is a matter for the LOCAL police the FBI has little jurisdiction or care for to guys that have a beef. Unless it relates to interstate commerce..... Furthermore you have to consider the situation. Even with a recording none of the statements were actually made to your dude himself. SO Menacing is out the door in most states as well as Harassment or any thing there of. Some states this may be considered attempted assault because the dude had a plan and took a significant step by going to other dudes house. Your Dude should speak with the police have a report filed even if the police don't have enough to charge. Then on Wednesday see about getting a restraining order. Then other dude will go to jail for doing anything crazy. Saying you are going to physically harm someone then not doing it is rarely a crime. First Amendment and all that. Even if there was I am thinking low misdemeanor/petty offense. Side question how do you really know he did anything? Its not what you know it is what you can prove which is he likes to vent in vent that's it. CCP shouldn't get involved without a request from law enforcement, and that should be for term of use violations and responses to Subpoenas. Despite their desire to keep us all safe they have little real impact on the real world. Also as a side note for your dudes sake I would hope he doesn't have an altercation with other dude since you threw out that he has firearms which implies he intends to use them.... premeditation...... probably wouldn't fly in criminal court but a lawsuit could be a different matter. There again it depends on your states laws so calling the police is the logical first step. |

chances are people who plays this game are American. Since they constitutes the majority of the gaming industry revenues.
Second, FBI have tight connections with police worldwide.
Although most likely such trivial cases won't drag Interpol into this , at least FBI has a higher chance of actually solving the case instead of filing it and closing it if you report it to local police station which in most cases will dismiss your report for its "out of their jurisdiction" It is forbidden to kill. Therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

This sort of thing has happened before - I know of several incidents in Europe where RL threats have been made. I know of one instance where items were put through the letterbox with the implication "oh look any of these could be a firebomb". The guy went to jail for a couple of years for that.
I don't believe CCP will get involved as the threats were not made on their infrastructure. |

Besides, the other guy could have two shotguns and four rifles, and bring those instead of the baseball bat next time and get the jump on your CEO. It's best for him to take the initiative and get the police involved to prevent harm in the first place, not wait for harm to come to him then scramble to find a shotgun on the sidewalk when he's out walking the dog one afternoon. |

What if the guy decides to beat up his wife while she is out shopping, or his daughter on her way home from school, or just beats him to a cripple one night when he is not armed? The biggest problem with guns, is that they are worthless when someone really wants to hurt you, and he has all the time in the world.

I'd say go to the Police, or FBI, or who ever the Law Enforcement is where you are. As you've said they are both in the USA, and it seems, the same city, that shouldn't be too hard to do.
I've had to go to the Police before (in New Zealand) in regards to getting threats and the like in my previous jobs.
I find it best to sit at the PC, and type out a statement about the offence(s) I am wanting to report. Try and be as detailed as you can. The Police might have questions about what bought all this on, so I'd try and cover that in the statement.
The less they have to ask, and the more detail you give, chances are it will make their job easier, and the faster they can act. If you have a recording of the LiveStream, then that would be awesome. Burn it as an audio CD** and take it with you.
