A lot of us here are in the same spaceboat drifting through space. Full/Part Time Job, Friends & Family, & maybe a significant other yammering on about the dishes that have piled up. I've recently left a corp because I couldn't find the time to actively participate. Schedules wouldn't line up. I'm only available 3-4 hours a day outside of work and never when we were running ops. And I'm certainly not consistent about that small portion of time with all that comes up unexpectedly.
So I'm considering my options. How do you all make it work. I'm sure there are many busier than I am who still manage to make more time for Eve but I can't fathom how. How many hours do you spend in Eve in a week and do you end up running into the same scheduling problems? |

I just neglect my family alltogether. My imaginary time is way more entertaining than the RL people around me, they have tons of problems and keep whining to me about them. that's not as fun as internet spaceships. I may even take my daughter-in-law's college fund and blow on cheetos and beer just to complete the effect.
Life is too short to be sad about other people's problems.
On a more serious note, i'm very lucky that the corp i'm in is full of people with families, so there's an understanding that sometimes not everyone can make it all the time. And not every single op is the "one op we have to have 100% of people on or we lose the entire region!" There's a strange sense of realistic expectations flowing. It's actually distrubing how rationale it is at times.
Alcohol also works. |

I stopped wasting my time through sleeping years ago. This really benefit me when I started playing EVE.
12 hours a day for RL, 11 hours for EVE, one hour for sleep (if you ever get a headache or hungover). After CCP cut the downtime by 50%, my day got about 30 minutes longer, allowing me to spend more time for RL or EVE.
Sleep is one of the most overrated things and one of the biggest time wasters. I wish there was no downtime so I didn't waste any time at all. |

I'm back down to like maybe 10 hours in a week. I run incursions for a couple hours once or twice a week, then go pvp with friends the remaining about of time I'm on with the money I made incursioning. I'm completely solo and it works out well for me. |

It IS a fun game and I wish I had more time to spend on it. What bugs me is that I used to have the kind of time a few years ago but the older I get the more solidified my schedule is. I think Kell has a good idea with the alcohol, though. I'm certain loosening up would solve that problem. I'd cut into sleep like Amsterdam but I already lose out enough on that already. Wow, 1 hour a night...
I guess the first step would be as CCP Wrangler says and find those like-minded people with the most similar schedules. I just hope we're not all so inconsistent that no one is ever on. Ah well, thanks for the suggestions |

I would find a corp within the same time zone as you with people who do similar things as you.
For example: If you live and work in the UK and work a 9-5 job and are expected to eat dinner with your wife instead of playing spaceships until, say, 8pm then you want to find a corp full of other people that do the same.
Other Example: If you're a student in the East USA and can play in between lectures in the day and later into the evening after your study work then you could find a corp that has EU tz players for the day and USA West coast players for the evening.
Finding corps is pretty easy and although it may seem like everyone in EVE is a back-stabbing thief, the reality is that a large number are just wanting to do some pewpewz after work... like you :)

There have been times where I went without playing for weeks on end. I've been involved in many rush projects over the course of the summer and barely had enough time to enjoy the weather let alone a game of spaceship pew pew. I'm likely spread too thin with my endeavors. At the end of the day you need money in your pockets and debts take the flavor out of relaxation.
I can't even imagine playing with managing multiple accounts. I can hardly take time to appreciate the one I've got. If I gave up seeing my family, my girl, get 4 hours of sleep every night, and resign myself to a humbling budget I probably could get a whole lot out of it. I'm sure I'd have a great time too. |

I dropped from 4 accounts to 2 since most were just training and not doing anything. I keep tabs while I'm at work since I work at home and can use EVE as a CPU hungry chat app. My corporation is just casual pilots doing what they want and use the corp for mostly social reasons plus sharing some corp assets.
Basically, I've given up doing the null sec alliance thing and just go exploring and doing some manufacturing when I do find the time to actually undock. There is plenty of mostly solo activities you can do plus you can jump into an Incursion fleet when the mood hits you. Rees Noturana // Professional Treasure Hunter |

I go for months without doing little more than updating the skill queue at times. That's just the way it is. The only long sessions I ever did - more than one hour - in the last year or so were for the live event incursions.

You only need enough RL to finance a room, net connection, food and the EVE subscription. Beyond that, screw it.
There is no reason to spend your time doing stuff you don't like just so you can finance stuff you like only to find out that between job and sleep there isn't enough time left in the day to enjoy what you're working for to enjoy. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

Well I enjoy some of the things I do in RL. Though by its nature its not particularly or consistently lucrative. And I'm afraid I've grown rather attached to RL. I feel there may be a way that my Eve experiences compliment my RL lifestyle just beyond being casual, though I admire your commitment to doing what you love, Abrazzar. I know I can't fully commit myself to a single game, no matter how intensive/immersive/engaging. At some point I want to advance in my career/trade and still participate in the world at large. Essentially level up in RL. But Eve is my relaxant, it's my kicking off the shoes and putting on the slippers, so eventually I'll need my fix.
Somewhere along the lines there will be a trade off. One or the other based on what I feel is most important to me. That or I just combine the two in some mutant space fusion. |

EVE is not for the casual gamer unless you want to stick to PvE. Incidentally this is exactly why EVE will never be as mainstream as CCP wants it to be, because it holds little appeal for the casual PvPer.
The effect that we all observed since Dominion was released is that people are simply quitting the game because stability has been removed and all of a sudden it's just no longer worth the effort to spend all this time to come back a couple days later and find the situation completely changed. |

I save on free time by reading my alliance forums on my phone during tea/lunch breaks at work. That is the limit of what I can do there though. At home I've got an understanding girlfriend that I live with (she went with me to fanfest on Siisters of EVE this year...) who doesn't mind me being on the laptop alot while she watches whatever is on TV.
I do not get out to PVP as much as I might like but then that also reduces the need to plough time into ISK earning. Which leads me to the next bit; fly ships that you can afford to replace and where possible go for 'passive income' such as ticking over T1 production or PI supplemented by active playing. So long as your PVP habits aren't too pricey that should get you by.
I am a corp CEO myself and I suspect my time spent on EVE is modestly high (15-20 hours a week guesstimate), but much of it goes into corp running/community oriented stuff rather than actual undocking as much as I wish. My view on recruitment is that if people are at least making an effort to involve themselves in the corp then I'm happy to have them. I do try to put the effort into making the corp the best I can, but I in turn rely on my corp mates to help me out with moving stuff about; which saves me time in getting into the action. http://uglebsjournal.wordpress.com/ |

I'm in the same situation for PvP, Ugleb, in that I don't do it very often. I've made a good effort on focusing on PvP and found I'm not very good at it and have spent a lot of time after refilling my wallet. For a while exploration was my 'thing' and seems to be the most lucrative out of all the professions I've pursued. I think your situation is most ideal for what I'm considering and congratulate your achieving a good balance between RL & EVE.
I see your alliance participates in RP, which is something I may factor in when deciding on my next corp. Interacting with other players can take place on a forum over the easy-access web would allow me to get my fix and allow me to plan corp events more carefully. It's not simply the game that attracts me to EVE but the mood and atmosphere. So that's something to consider. |

I've been playing for about six months now, my first MMO. I'm in the somewhat fortunate position where my girl and I work slightly different schedules, so I'll generally get two~three hours to play a night (unless she has the next day off, in which case I run my daily PI in twenty minutes and call it good). I can get about fifteen hours a week in when things aren't busy, and I sometimes can get an entire weekend day to play EVE and drink beer without distraction. Other times I get an hour a week in, just the way it goes. For some people RL is more important than internet spaceships, fun as they are.
I have a kid on the way, hopefully I'll have my hauler alt in a good missioning ship by that time because I'll have to consolidate accounts with less time/money to play. It may come down to playing once or twice a month, or I may be able to keep the late night schedule as normal, who knows (haven't been a dad before).
Thing is, I'll still have a sub as long as I find the game fun, no matter what else I have to give up (yes, beer is included here!). EVE really is that unique of a game. Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |
