Mars One is going small time, only starting with likely 6 people living in essentially a compartmentalized redneck trailer.
SpaceX on the other hand, is talking about housing up to 200k people in giant sealed domes. This struck me as funny because my capstone project included said domes and even our delivery system was the same. Our views on crew and supply delivery systems differed however as I designed a ship capable of transporting 3 large containers that would simply drop out of the aircraft, and go to the surface while the ship remains in space for transport back to earth. |

Now if they sent the entire cast of jersey shore on a one way trip into the sun, that is something else entirely... Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

lol nope.
Supplemental lol nope.
It's really not fair to pretend we can just hop into space. We evolved for these specific conditions, and have as much chance as a fish does on land. Until we can develop a craft that can not only simulate conditions on Earth perfectly, but also shield us from the extreme radiation, this is still just a dream. Yep, does sound like a redneck trailer. And about as fun as living in a trailer with six people, through a long winter, in the northern Yukon. With no car and no road back to civilization. If you help someone when they're in trouble, they will remember you when they're in trouble again.

What if vaccines become activated somehow in space and cause all these problems, and the true purpose of the vaccine program is to make sure humans can never leave Earth?

It's a safe bet.

At least redneck trailers can move if they don't get along with their neighbors. Who ever goes up there better damn well make sure they like the company they are with. I can imagine that when the next installment of personnel show up they'll probably be harassed for weeks.
I'm curious to look at their outline though. How will they power the modules? How will the modules be anchored in dealing with Mars months long sandstorms? How do they plan to approach long term sustainability? What happens if a member gets appendicitis? What will they actually do on Mars? What is the plan in the event of a hull breach?
IMO the first 4 will have it the hardest because its just them for the first 2 years. Any issues that they have will have to be solved there or wait for at least the 2 years when the planets are at their shortest distance again. Even an emergency craft would take well over a year to reach the outpost. |
