After coming back to Eve Online (from a 12 month hiatus) I've been looking, as you normally do, at my character's trained skills and new skill plans and it made me realise that there are a fair number of skill points wasted on things I'm probably not going to be using in a long long time. So my question is: if you had to restart Eve from scratch (no alts etc.) how would you progress ship wise and what skills would you stop yourself from investing in?
Personally I'd have purely stuck with missiles (and T2 Light/Medium drones) and focused towards a Tengu. Mistakes? stop trying to multitask and do everything in Eve at once. |

You don't gain anything my restarting, you just lose everything you've trained already!
Don't worry about skills you are not using right now, you'll eventually use them.
And as much as I dislike it, Tengu is a really, really good ship for many kinds of things.

Agreed on the tengu bit with Roime. It's a really versatile boat. Just a suggestion, instead of restarting just roll another alt and get him to pvp with those spanking new cruisers! Cheap as chips and so much fun! |

I've restarted many times in EVE (I'm a terrible altoholic), this time I kinda guessed that Amarr would do well in the, then, upcoming rebalance so i went full Amarr. Trained up my drones, lasers and now fly a Legion for when I want to so some exploration, if I can be bothered. Amarr is and will become more and more powerful for solo/small gang pvp, which is what I'm looking for. And if ofcourse great at fleet PVP.
Would I have to choose again I'd pick either Amarr or Gallente. Amat victoria curam. Excellence in everything.

Restarting from scratch, I'd roll Caldari, aim for a Tengu as you said.
Starting with core skills > Tank > Missiles > Tengu.
Drake is still a good stepping stone, so I'd probably be fine in that for a long time until I got into a Tengu. Either that, or a Raven hull; though that would be deviating a bit from the Tengu tree. |

In restarting from scratch you gain the opportunity to apply the lessons you learned in your earlier characters' mistakes. Your first may have many divergences or simply be all over the place with excessive redundancies. These skills may take you years if not decades to get the absolute most from. (note- i'm not referring to all V, - but simply all races ships & skills to V's & spec-IV's with solid universal competencies).
In contrast if you keep yourself focused down one race's set of ships / toolbox, you'll gain vertical (ship roles within one race), flexibility, in contrast to traditional horizontal (2 or more races yet same role) cross training. In a fraction of the time of attempting to be universally skilled.
Each provide adaptability vs. time invested skilling options, strengths and weaknesses depending on how you wish to interact with New Eden. |

"fraction of the time" meaning 9 months for the competencies, another 6 months-ish for ships and spec IV's Want To Adopt: any 2003 children to work as passive income miner alts in the PLEX trade.. |

I started from scratch when I started working for CCP.
My previous two main characters were a 140m SP Gallente/Amarr close range, armor tanked PvP character and a 170m SP Caldari/Matari ECM Shield tanking and kiting character with maxed out fleet command and gang link skills.
Right now, I'm training to do the same. When something works, don't change it.

While not restarting EvE, this toon is starting at the beginning, I have trained skills for her to fly a BC, and the rest is going to the core skills she has genos and basic implants + the cereb accel booster for her first 35 days so she trains at > +5 implant speed. she has the most basic of industry skills so she could do the career missions and everything else has gone into cores, her bc and compensations. If I had to restart my main, I wouldn't train all those worthless mining and refining skills, and I probably wouldn't bother with any of the social skills except for Fast Talk. With the coming skill changes I'd probably specialize into Gallente and Caldari, wait for good core skills to cross to Amarr, and completely ignore Minmatar. |

I'd roll Amarr of Khanid instead of Achura, but I am still hoping that CCP will someday allow us to change bloodlines.
Being orientated both toward invention/manufacture and combat made for a pretty slow and difficult start for me, jack of all trades and master of none. But right now, after several years, I think it is awesome for me to fund my pewpew via t2 sales- and of course keep some of those ships and modules for myself to make it even cheaper to lose my ships
One thing I would change is not wasting so much time in lame highsec indy corps but go for some more interesting lowsec or WH corps much earlier.
Skill-wise: I have rank 5 in astrogeology and mining, some former CEO was about to force me into a Hulk, but luckily I resisted and left the corp. These are the only skills I consider wasted on this character. Morgan Freeman ordered me to self-destruct....now what's your excuse? |

when you start working for CCP, all your former characters get gigabanned. Its one of those accountability things implemented after the t20 disaster. Ishtar Starfire: As a pure caldari pilot i feel that with the deployment of the new tier 3 battlecruisers you have given an unfair advantage to everyone except caldari pilots. an example would be like giving a fat kid a whole cake while the skinny kid has to watch and get nothing.

Yes, if you start working for CCP, you got to mothball ALL your former characters. You may/should start other characters from scratch to (anonymously) play the game.
If you quit your job at CCP, you'll get your mothballed accounts back (if you want).
Many of the newer (and former - Selene coms to mind) CCP devs have referred to this on air during the tournaments (and at other occasions).

If I had to start over my skills would still be all over the place. There is simply too much I like doing when the mood strikes. There is pure pvp, missions and reprocessing loot, scanning down anomalies, planetary interaction and the cloaked blockade runner to get the goods, building manufacturing, and on rare occasions even mining. I enjoy doing nearly all of it.
There is one thing I probably wouldnt train up until I had most everything else and that is Tech 2 production. Too much of a PITA as I've gotten lazier.
So yea, I would be just as screwed now as I was at the beginning of my career because of all the skills I would need. When it comes to PvP, I am like a chiwawa hanging from a grizzley bears pair of wrinklies for dear life. |

Restarting is the worst thing you could possibly do.
You will lose all the skillpoints you have gained, which will in many cases help you down the road. Aside from slightly higher clone costs, which really dont get all that expensive till you are over 90mil SP, and even then aren't bad, theres no disadvantage to having more SP.
The skillpoints you have, you may not think are useful, but will come into play down the line. You will think, hey, I'd like to try this, or that out, and will find that you already have part of the training done. I find it HIGHLY unlikely that most of the SP you have trained, you won't find some use for down the line. Plus, I'm sure that you have some into immediately useful skills, too.
If I had to restart, simple answer, I wouldn't. The ONLY way I'd play new characters, is if my current ones got permaband, or deleted, and if they did, I would quit, far too much time and effort invested into them. Can't think of any good reason that you'd want to start a new character except for "all my empire faction standings are -10" in which case, move to 0.0/lowsec and never come back to highsec lol. |
