I know everybody's sick of insta discussions so I'll be brief. I gather the trouble is the bandwidth required to manage instas and the lag when accessed in-game. Why not lose the long lists/folders in Places and People and have instas display 'in the current system only' as a drop down that is accessible with a simple rt click and 2nd drop down menu from that to edit. Wouldn't this limit the server side data access requirements in game and prevent the arbitrary copying and selling of list after list? Only bookmarks within a system would need to be stored as 'instantly accessible' and whole regions would not be available to copy and sell.

I dont copletly understand what your trying to say, but if i understand correctly this will mean instas are still in the game, and therefore this is a bad idea.

You gather wrong I'm afraid. Check out the numerous threads on the issue. __________________________

Originally by: Ovuer Let's look at the drawbacks of instas:
- Other people using instas become [close to] invulnerable - Other people using instas travel as fast as you - Other people that don't have instas are dead meat - If you do use instas and don't have instas to a certain location, you probably won't travel there because you know you will get killed - Mobile warp disruptors can in many cases stop YOU and everyone else using instas, let alone the one that do not (and will probably stop you faster and easier after the next patch) - New players who loose their first ship because they didn't have instas usually quit before they even learn what an insta is - 100's of instas on the majority of characters are causing unnecessary server load in many scenarios (logon, switching systems, on use etc.)
Now, from my point of view, the far most important part of this equation is the near invulnerability during travel. I couldn't care less about travel time in comparison to having people running around [close to] invulnerable.

The bandwidth issue was mentioned in one of the blogs. So what if there is apparent invulnerability with instas? There ISN't in reality it is an illusion. Run a gate that's camped both sides. People that don't like instas simply can't be bothered to make them and use them. CCP want more people in 0.0 but without instas no-one is going to try without joining a corp or alliance that's based there.

Edited by: WHeisenberg on 30/06/2005 02:32:32 Funniest self-defeating argument I read in the Dev Blog against the use of insta's said something like,
"New players are quitting the game because they dont know how to make instas, and are being ganked by pirates at gates".
Ok.. so they get ganked by a pirate at a gate. They quit the game. The Dev Blog claims it is partly because the user 'didnt know how to make an insta'.
So.. remove all instas from the game. The new player still gets ganked at the gate - as will many veteran players. How is this going to solve the 'I quit because I'm ganked and cant do anything about it' problem?
The pirates are the ONLY players in the game who stand to gain anything from me not having an insta (or, alternatively, any pilot that I'm at war with).
If pirates want to 'own' a system, then it is THEIR job to stop me from making my insta in the first place. You say you 'own' that gate? By all means, own it all you want. But to 'own' that gate you'd better have someone stationed there to turn my ship into steam before I can make that bookmark!
Without insta's, pirate pilots can 'own' any system they choose.
Without Instas, even 'carebear space' is unsafe these days. Suicide gankers gather at all entrances to the major hubs *yulai* and nail cargo carriers every day.
The only thing that gets most of us past these guys/gals is our instas. What good does having a fleet of ships escorting a hauler through the Kemerk gate do, when the escort cant shoot back at a suicide ganker?
On top of that.. think of those of us who haul for 99% of our EvE life. Those who run POS's NEED the instas, or our efforts in production would be greatly reduced. It's bad enough that we have to wait so long for a reaction to be changed around - but adding the 'no insta' clause to the game? Having to travel 15km (*IF we put our stations right at the warp-in point to a moon - as much as 150k if we didnt) suddenly adds HOURS of crawling between stations.
Shipping considerations, major business ventures, huge contracts, station setups and trade routes are all based on having the right bookmarks available. Take them away, and entire corporations could very well go bankrupt due to not enough TIME to get the hauling done to meet their contractual obligations.
I dont know why, every time something happens with this game, it's geared to make things take LONGER and LONGER to accomplish. If my autopilot has the ability to land me on an exact spot 15km from a gate, then it should also have the ability to land me within 1500 meters of it. Or are our autopilots just Timex Sinclair computers using 300 baud modems to communicate with our warpdrives? If so.. I want an Autopilot II BPO please.
Bottom line - remove the instas from the game - lose a large number of your user base - myself included.

Store them on the client computer.. Simple. Oh so simple. Let the client load them up each system.

You don't speak for me. And I'm betting you don't even speak for a small number of the user base, much less a large one.
