I forgot to upgrade my clone after getting podded the other night and was in such a rush to get some payback that I forgot to upgrade my clone...
...rather than getting any payback what happened was that I got podded again (never pvp when annoyed, you get far to impulsive )
I then got an evemail telling me I had lost 512,000 skill points in Mining Barge taking me back down to level 4 - it is going to take me 16 days to replace those lost skill points!
I do not understand the point of upgradeable clones - is the fact that i lost a fully kitted BS not enough of a "punishment" for losing in pvp (I agree there needs to be one to keep it exciting) that you need to run the risk of losing a ton of skill points as well?
If not then what is the point of having the upgradeable clones other than to catch people out when they forget and p**s them off when they lose skill points? It cannot be the cost of the clone because if you can afford to lose a BS in pvp then you can afford 4m isk for a clone.
I know that it was my fault for forgetting to get a new clone, but the question is, what does this add to the game? What does the need to have to upgrade your clone actually do for the game?
Skill training at the higher levels already takes WAY too long IMO and now I am set back 16 days to re-learn something I lost as a result of a simple oversight - the cost far outweighs the error to my mind - this is the kind of frustration that leads people to say "s*d it, I am getting sick of the slow learnnig process in this game as it is, I am not going to waste another 16 days to relearn somethign i already had" and to go off and become lvl 60 WOW players after a weekend of grind.
As an aside, it was a pleasure being killed by the PA gang ([BLADE.] and some others I dont remember) in Impass they other day - they caught me out twice in quick succession but there was no smack or gloating in local which makes a very refreshing change.

a lesson is to slow down if you get podded make sure you have money to cover a new clone. Dont be so eager for revenge. Its bascially an ISK sink.

I consider them a relic from old times.... (this post is based on guesses, not facts, and some old backstory items)
When u read the backstory, i suppose they were meant to be a skill cap, as more advanced clones were meant to be illegal, and more and more hard to come by with rising skills, like a grade A or something only available in 0.0 from pirat fractions or the like.
This would have been a concept to soft-limit the maximal SP a char can ever have (u can go for more, if u don't get podded) which was droped during the evolution of eve . . .

Didn't anyone tell you? CCP like punishing people for pretty much anything, imaptience or otherwise...
You Mine - u get PvPers all over u (dont quote me here) You PvP - u get weapon "Balance" every month You PvE - everyone hates you... "DIE! DIE! DIE!"
CCP's outlook on PvP - We want everyone to do it... but we want the losers to be so badly crippled they have to mine for 3 months to get everything back (unless there obscenely rich)...
But I do agree with you... it is a bit harsh and you might wanna try politely asking the GM's (or whoever) if they can do anything. Its not like you have anything else to lose.

they still serve a valid use - ie higher skill playes have been playing longer and should have more ingame ISK to cover their expensive ship losing and podding activities. If in empire he chances of getting podded are much less.

The thing is though is that they would need to be way more expensive to act as any kind of disincentive/isk sink - in 0.0 I can make back the 4m isk cost of my new clone in about 10 minutes in my friendly neighbourhood complex - so the isk cost is irrelevant, especially compared to the lose of tech 2 modules/implants etc.
I will put a large bright yellow post-it note on my monitor saying "Before undocking have you upgraded your clone?" so hopefully it won't happen again.

It's a bit like the wifes birthday. The best way to remember it is to forget it once.

LOOK CPP! He want's you to take more of his ISK!!! If that doesn't say "Plz make cloan more expensive, because there not a very good ISK sink imo" I dunno what does!
Disclaimer: I like the price of my clone, plz don't change it. |

16 days of a year ain't that much, get over it.

How about a method to auto-buy a clone identical you cover your current level(or the best possible)? If you run out of cash, it tells you, so you can sell a module or something to get back in business.

how about clonesurance? the ultimate isk sink, you buy a clone for howevermany isk and then you have the option to insure it if it dies. (contracts would last 3 weeks =P)
