Edited by: Winterblink on 28/06/2005 18:45:43 Yes, but you can't pick a location that will make EVERYBODY happy. There's always going to be someone faced with travelling like 8 timezones to get there who will complain that it should be closer.
I pitched the "BBQ in my backyard" idea mostly because I've been living in my house for a few years and realized I haven't had a housewarming party. And I figure a few dozen drunk strangers from other countries would be able to kick it up to the "Legendary" notch. :)

I'll fly out there if you supply the food & the hot women.
You'll need to have an escort for my GF at the mall, so I can, ya know, have fun with the hot women & such... ------------------------------------------------ "for piece sakes!" |

You'll never make everyone happy but im sure they would make MANY more people happy if they hold the event outside of iceland... somewhere in mainland europe or in north america.

I'm not sure why. If pricing's an issue, well guess what -- it costs to fly anywhere.
Hold it in the US and all the Europeans will complain.
Hold it in Europe and all the North Americans will complain.
I think there's only one thing we can do about this. Lets take the FanFest to the only truly neutral territory left. One where everyone can complain about equally. The home of Tux. The iceland of icelands: ANTARCTICA

Flight cost is not the only factor in this. There isn't exactly a whole lot of option when holding the event in iceland. You can choose from a handful of flight mostly on the same airline. Once your there you have a very limited number of hotels to stay at.
Yes it costs to fly, but holding it in mainland europe means more people can take other means of transportation there. Holding it in North america and again you have a large chunk of the eve population that can find alternate means of transportation and lodging.
Its not just the cost of flying, the whole thing from top to bottom might just be better for the fans if it were held closer to where they live. Cant make em all happen but you can sure as hell make many many more people happy.

Thats only because you've been to Cleveland and never to Iceland. Im sure lots of people would enjoy an indians game and a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame :)
But anyways, its not a knock against iceland or anything... It would just be better to have fanfest somewhere where you could get more Fans (new and old) to attend. Not much new exposure to be found in iceland...

Its a fanfest, not a marketing road trip. It's for established players, most of which are in Europe.
I can tell you from experience that one English speaking country is pretty much like another. Go to a truly "foreign" country and you get different cuisine, tradition and culture. Iceland will blow your mind in ways that Cleveland just cant compare to.

Hmmm i was want to say again that this has nothing to do with the country or its culture but only with its location. Again im not really concerned about money or anything like that.. mearly its location being away from well over 90% of the EVE population.
Its a fanfest i know and its nice that its in a unique country where the game was born but the location just isnt player friendly. Only a small percentage of the population can even think about attending it. A fanfest should be something where fans have an oportunity to attend.. not ALL of them but a larger chunk than what the current fanfest is available to.

i personally love america especially the city i live in austin texas, that would be a great place for a fanfest imo, its such a computer place.
Personally i'll never go to UK, i hear you guys have horrible problems with brats or "chavs" as you call them. In texas they wouldnt last 5 minutes...
I'd go to germany though, that place is cool.
And no i would not say the UK has more experianced players than the us, it only has more pretentious, uptight players (imo) =P.

Mexico'd be ideal..there is a legal drinking age, but no one pays attention to it, cops and store owners included.

Yeh we do, but don't let that put you off. The vast majority of londoners are extremely frendly and the nightlife si fantastic.

Just like the US, depends on where you go. I'd be more concerned about East St. Louis than where I live in Mexico by a LONG measure.

Edited by: Ticondrius on 28/06/2005 20:25:35 Yet again, depends on where you go. :) Border zone's water is terrible...poisonous in some places. the other 70% of the country is not really good to fine the closer you get to cities. In a city..the water is usualy just fine out of the tap.
Any more Mexican Myths for me to bust?

My 2 issues with Mexico (and Austin for that matter) is it's just too hot most of the time. The other issue for Mexico (at least for those of us in North America) is heightened scrutiny from customs, (unless you're coming from one of the major resort areas and sometimes even from there) due to Mexico being one of the routes used to bring drugs from South America.

I'd say no matter which side of the pond you put it on, you're going to "alienate" a vast percentage of fans. It's a win/win and lose/lose situation.

Im really not all that concerned about what side of the pond its on. Of course your not going to please a lot of people. My argument is you'll please a lot more if you pick europe or north america over iceland. A location where fans can attend easier would yield a larger turnout.

Well, I can let you into a little bit of a secret, revealed exclusively to me by Oveur during last year's Fan Fest, whilst he was serving the few remaining drops of Quafe Ultra.
The Devs had originally drawn up a long list of exotic locations and a much shorter list of locations convenient for the fan-base. There were long discussions over the relative merits of Beirut, Chechnya, Kaabul, Baghdad, Mount St Helens and New York. Finally, they decided on The Maldives. (The exact reason for this choice, Oveur would not reveal, even to me).
However, at this point TomB made one of his characteristic terse contributions to the discussion, "Nerfed. Iceland."
So there you have it! The true reason why we are all off to Iceland again this year.

I live in the U.S. east coast and realize that this is not the center of the EVE fanbase. If any one is keeping score: U.S.=yes, Canada=most probably, U.K.=maybe, Iceland=I don't think so.
