Hi all, I've just started up on Eve along with a bunch of mates but we're a little confused as to what exactly we're supposed to be achieving. There are very few other players around, lots of empty space and little to do beyond mining even when we do set our corp up. Pls help so we don't give up on it and leave when the monthly fees kick in.

Eve is one of the only games that dosn't have a level mill to run and is so open ended.
You can do what ever you want.
The only limiting factors are ISK to pay for it and time to learn the skills.
The universe is there and there are lots of challenges, the biggist is staying alive followed by makeing money. After that its entirly up to the player to decide what he wants to go do with his time.
Polaris will be running some events if you feel the need to roleplay, but there still training.

I can tell you and your friends have studied the written guides to the game extensively :)
Anyways quick link: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=9862.
Bottom line is: you have to put some time into understanding the game.
As for a quick explanation of the "goal"..well somebody from CCP once said something like this in an interview: "it's a battle of territory, conquest and ruling the world".

The basic premises is to make as much money as you can, to get the biggest and baddest ship you can, the biggest and baddest weapon that you can. What do you do after that? I have no idea. I might once I get there.

Form your corp with your mates or join an existing corp together. If you join a corp you can always leave to form your own.
To start off with increase your skills in mining, refining, frigate and indy. This will allow you to mine as as a team. Don't worry too much about combat in the safe zones.
If there are 4 of you, 3 can mine to cans, one can use an indy to carry it back. The one with the best refine skill does the refine. Sell it. Repeat until you can buy bigger and better ships. Learn Combat and cruiser skills not forgetting electronics, engineering etc.
Make tonnes of ISK and spend it on more skills and ships. Repeat many times.
Recruite players into corp.
Build a starbase when you have several hundered billion ISK. Repeat many times.

Cheers for the responses. Spionkop's is exactly what I fear abour this game. It's like The Sims in that you just build up your pretty space station and then make another one except unike The Sims there is no interaction except for a couple of agents and the people from my clan who. Nothing in the game seems to do anything, where is the intrigue and strategy?

Well somebody might get annoyed with your corporation and try to blow your starbase up.
How would like a battle to defend your station?
2 fleets with cruisers, battleships and frigates slugging it out.
However I can tell you right now that you have to change your attitude towards the game if you want to experience the high level gameplay. There is a lot to learn (and read) about this game. Check out the fan sites and read some of the earlier posts on the forum. It's not like your questions havent been asked and answered many times over :)

I am sorry if my post is negative or repetitive, I can find nothing in the first 15 pages of this forum that addresses there being too little to do in this game. If I wanted to fight over my space station, I'd have continued to play Planetside but it didn't have enough content. I think I may have the wrong attitude as I would like to purchase a trade item and it do something for my entertainment rather than being simply for trade on the commodities market. There are better ways of pretending to trade stocks ie when there are actually some other people at all around as the huge Eve universe is grossly under-populated.

of course it's unpopulated now. it's only been about 2 months out. that's not enough time to get all the players in the world to come to this game. a lot of people will leave this game before it hits its peak.
eve online is a game, have fun |

The game averages about 2-3k people and peaks at about 6500 currently. Spreach them out over 10,000 systems and you do have a lot of space to CARVE up and put your name on :}

All of the replies here pin-point areas in the game you may find enjoyment in. I have noticed something, in that you get out of this game more then you put into it. There is no level treadmill to climb, no "I've got to kill the next leet/rat/orc/goblin to get the next level..." addiction. This is a game that if you put your mind to it, you can play just 15 minutes a day, and on the weekends for several hours, and still be successfull. Putting your mind to it, you can create a financial, industrial empire with low hands-on maintenance. Or you can go out, and clear 'roids for pirates. Heck you can go out and corner the market for wheat if you wanted to. All it takes is attention to detail, and some thought behind your strategy. Go through several regions (even 0.0 regions) and look at who's buying what at what quantity, be it ammunition, Miner Is, Minerals, Ore, or heck the afforementioned Wheat, and then find who's selling it cheap. With attention to those types of details, you don't have to mine a single 'roid after you've made your "front" money.
All this game takes is that type of thought, versus all of the EQs out there where all you do is go out kill some rats, capture some Keeps, and then come back a day later to do it all over again. The possibilities are endless as to how you want to go about becoming a successful player. --------------------------------------------------

Well there are quite some things to do in the game. Never ever think that mining is the only thing there is in it. I went for weeks without mining after I bought my Rifter and made at least around 10mil trading more exotic things, factories, bought big ships I couldn't buy at good prices and sold them to other players. Lots of pretty dangerous and very quick trades where I had to zip around pod killers trying to deliver on time.
Some of the things to do: - hunt npc pirates with friends. More interesting if you are a bunch. It can be very interesting if you fly with old experienced fighters that know what they are doing. - sell the more exotic things you find mostly on the trade channel. Sometimes I talk with 5 people at one time, while avoiding pirates and try to find the closest market places, this is really fun for me. - manufacture things, and try to find something good to manufacture. some things are not worthwhile some are awesome. - research, improve and sell your blueprints or use them yourself. - explore, both for places and market prices.
- fight wars with some people. dangerous but probably a lot of fun but you need some money to do it. I think this will be extremly fun later one when CCP introduces some reason for this. Now I just can't figure out a reason to fight and risk loosing my ship.
- be a pirate. If you are really bored and thinking of quiting I would try this, don't be a spoiler try to be more clever. Jump on industrial ships and try to get their precious cargo. I know some people carry 10-20miljons on their ships. :)
You worry about building stations, well I wouldn't, it's not even in the game yet. I really don't think this game is similar to the sims. I think that in the months' to come this game will more and more be about fighting wars or living in a gallaxy that is at war, and trying to stay alive and get the money for it. At least I really hope it will be.
So, try to think, just to go out and mining is really not fun, I know. But if you do things with a lot of people then it can be great! /Phoibos

A source of constant frustration to me is people who say they are bored with the game - but actually only treat it as a rat race where they try to earn money and nothing else. If you get even slightly involved in your character (many people react badly to the phrease roleplaying - despite the fact that this is a RP game) you will enjoy it alot more.
As for intregue (spelling?) etc there is alot of great stuff. At any one time there are around 5000 people playing, thats a whole lot of people to interact with, and lets face it thats always going to be more interesting than AI - or scripted stuff. Ive seen alot of stuff that has been really fun in corp life, like spys infiltrating the corp, or in turn using an alt char to spy on other corps (not ripping people off - that sucks). Managing corp security to prevent people ripping you off is a challenge in itself. Alot of corp alliances, both being forged and broken. Pirate corps blockading important trade routes (whether u agree with them or not its certainly `interesting).
If you add a little roleplay into the mix you can have a great time - for instance being a Minmatar im not to well disposed to Ammarians and have had some fun run ins with them when I encounter them in space and also enjoy all the banter on the role play forum between the two groups. Have a read of some of the articles and stories on this site - like your race background. And have a look at the timeline at the back of the manual and come up with a little bit of character for you er... character.
Further more I explore alot which allows you to find some great stuff (the boring player say things like "but they are pointless") - Abanndoned stations, carved asteroids, ancient relics, ship graveyards etc.
Have a look at www.explore-eve.net for some interesting exploration stuff.
Or have a look at my ingame site (not much there but some of it may be of interest) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sennen/eve_ingame/
Hopefully some of that may inspire you to go out and find how good eve really can be... dont listen to all the whingers on these forums :)
