Hi everyone,
As some of you know, I've been wanting to make a recording of the Eve Chronicles for some time now. Well, I finally went ahead and recorded one - The Jovian Wet Grave. A big thank you goes out to CCP Eterne for answering my questions prior to completing the recording.
The recording can be found here.
I would appreciate your comments - I'm not a professional voice actor or audio engineer, just someone who likes the Chronicles. If there is enough interest, I'd like to continue with further stories and would appreciate suggestions for the next story (or stories) to record.
Thank you, Zendane |

I think it's a great idea, and this first episode is quite nice. Maybe your voice is a bit too low (in frequency, like a bass, not sure the word in english) making it a hard to understand at first, but then you get used to it and it is quite nice. :) Sepherim Catillah; Ex-Imperial Navy Officer |

Thank you for the kind words folks and I appreciate the feedback, both public and private. It's good to know that people like the work and are willing to offer suggestions for future recordings!
Regarding my voice, this is my natural speaking voice. If I changed it then I would either sound false, scare small children, or both! If you can suggest a way to make my voice clearer and easier to understand then please let me know.
Regarding multiple actors - it's a fine idea but it isn't what I had envisioned for the recordings. My goal is to create a "book on tape" style of recording of the Chronicles and these generally involve one person using different vocal inflections to let the listener know when different characters are speaking. Multiple actors also means assigning and coordinating recordings (across the world!) and is a level of complexity I'm just not able to handle yet.
I would appreciate suggestions on stories to read and of course any other feedback via these forums or email.
Thanks for your support!

For this one, I think it'll be a bit easier to tell the difference between each of the voices.

Hi there,
this is fan-*******-tastic, I love podcasts and audiobooks, I love sci-fi and, of course, I dig Eve Online. Delivering a chronicle in a podcast format satisfies so many entertainment needs at once, I can't believe noone did this before. I guess podcasting is still quite a bit more demanding on your time than for example maintaining a blog.
You did great on The Jovian Wet Grave, I just heard that episode and can't wait to listen to Xenocracy. For episode zero I can only second Sepherim's remark about your rather low voice being more difficult to understand than other narrators' voices. But I can't suggest any remedies and I haven't listened to episode one which promises to be clearer.
Have you decided on whether you're going to continue? And if so, what's your release schedule? Once a month?
Awesome podcast! |

Thank you! And yes I am continuing with this - I've already recorded one and I just need a block of time to do the editing on it. For the curious, the next one will be And to Live in Peace.
When I envisioned the project I wanted to do about three a month (that works well with my work schedule) but I don't have a set schedule for recording yet. It's both easier and harder than I thought it would be, and I'm learning more as I go. Ideally the next one will be up within a few days from now.
Also, the podcast episodes to date are now available as a free download via iTunes, so feel free to watch for it there as well!

Multiple actors wouldn't really do much for me, and would eat up more of your time that could be spent recording. You have a good voice for this, and it's soothing enough that I can probably listen to these again while I'm trying to sleep. I hope you release more soon :)

Hello everyone - Episode 3, "Innocent Faces" is now available at The Eve Reader Website. Enjoy!
YuuKnow - That is good advice, and I've tried to vary the pacing on this episode a bit - faster in some areas where there is action, and slower during dialogue. I freely admit to being new to the field of broadcasting and recording, and I appreciate your advice - pardon my tardiness in letting you know!
Several people have sent ISK donations, and I would like to thank them for their generousity. I never anticipated seeing a single ISK for this work - it is a labor of love, you could say - and I appreciate the kindness.
I am of course open to all feedback and suggestions for future recordings. I have recently upgraded my equipment and I hope to provide improved sound quality for future recordings. Stay tuned!

World On Fire I like requests!
World on Fire is an excellent Chronicle and I'd be glad to read it. Since it is the sixth chapter in the "End of the World" series of chronicles, I'll start with the first one - "The Spiral" - and go from there.
I've already begun work on it and ideally it will be released later today or tomorrow. I'll post here when it is available, and this is a good point to let people know that the recordings are also available as a free download via iTunes (so you can subscribe to it and be notified when a new one is available).

The next episode has been posted!
"The End of the World" is a story arc of chronicles that takes place in six chapters. This episode is chapter one of that series, entitled "The Spiral" and I will be reading the entire story arc in order.
I rather like how this episode turned out. I've upgraded my equipment and software and, to my ear at least, it seems to make a noticeable difference. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions - my facility in both reading and using the audio editing software has been greatly influenced by your feedback.

Ronan Huren wrote:This is amazing. Nice work. Although different voice actors for a whole story not just multiple characters would be cool.Actually less work for you and could allow more to be done quickly if youve got a couple of people recording at the same time. Thank you Ronan! I'd actually like to address this since the topic has come up a few times now, in public and in private.
To put it simply, I would enjoy having more than myself on the recordings but I simply don't know how to make it work. If the other person was in the same room as me, then sure, that'd be simpler - we could use the same equipment, the same microphone (or at least the same mixer), same recording software, and so forth. It would also be in the same environment with the same noise dampening and room geometry, giving very similar results. Therefore, I fear that the challenges of coordinating these efforts remotely and using the software to make it sound "right" are simply beyond me. To be honest, I've been learning a lot as I go and the more I've practiced and experimented with recording and mixing, the more I've learned just how easy it is for it to sound "wrong" - not that my work is perfect, hardly so!
Having said all that, there are two stories that I have my eye on that would benefit from having multiple distinctive actors. The first is the upcoming Episode 6 in the End of the World arc, since it involves so many different people. At the very least having a female voice for the few lines Jamyl Sarum speaks would be a benefit, and other voices that could work would be the carrier dispatcher, President Foiritan and Doctor Garcia. This PDF file contains all six of the End of the World stories and you can read the lines. If this interests you then please let me know and we can talk.
The second recording would involve my all-time favorite Chronicle, Speaker of Truths. This story involves sometimes rapid-fire dialogue between multiple characters and would benefit from different voices. I can do two, perhaps three, possibly all four but I think it would benefit from multiple actors to give the audience a better sense of the tension involved.
Thank you for listening and I hope everyone enjoys the recordings!

I do like how the series turned out, and it feels like you are getting more comfortable with the equipment and more secure in your self. You sound more relaxed for every episode, and especially this last one must have been a challenge with so many characters, yet you pulled it off really well.
It also felt more smooth then previously, but this can be because of more practice and you have found a voice level you are comfortable with. But at the same time the character changes where obvious and you where able to put a lot of emotions into them without it sounding exaggerated.
As usual, i look forward to hearing the next one

The next episode in the Methods of Torture series (the Gallente) has been unexpectedly delayed due to a few factors. I've recorded it twice and been unsatisfied with the eventual result each time - it's a tricky episode to get down just right.

Due to graphic content, this episode is for mature audiences only. After listening to this episode, you may have a different view on just how far the Gallenteans will go to pursue what they feel is right...
With the Methods of Torture series completed, I would like to ask for more requests to read. The next episode is already in progress (What is it? Stay tuned to find out!) but beyond that I would really like to know what the community would want to hear. Is there a particular Chronicle that you really liked? Is there a story or series that you felt truly enriched your understanding of the Eve universe?

I certainly can do that. In fact, with how well the "End of the World" series worked as a multi-part project, I've been looking through the longer novella-style chronicles with that in mind - in particular the "Ruthless" novella, but I am always open to suggestions.

Episode 17 - Silent Furies - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. This was a special request and is part of a larger story arc that involves the published Eve novels.
I've already finished recording the episode after that and hope to have it up soon, once I finish editing it.

Zaitsev Thank you! I listened to that podcast as well (after being turned on to it earlier today by the author of the Emergent Patroller blog) and I'm pleased to hear that you like the recordings! I would appreciate advice on how to reach the Eve podcasters at large since this is a new community for me.

I just started listening to your podcast a few days ago after just searching for 'Eve Lore Podcasts"
I absolutley love it! I've only heard the first 2 episodes and they were excellent. I think this is a lot better than just having someone explain the lore. I had chills down my spine duing the second cast hearing Omvistus speak.
Look forward to hearing more!

Episode 18 - After the Fall - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. This is the story about a man living under the rule of the Caldari on occupied Caldari Prime. The events of this story tie in nicely with recent events such as the fall of the Titan.
For the curious, the next two episodes have already been recorded and are in post-production. Yes, there is a theme to these three episodes - "Oppression."

Episode 19 - Under the Sea, the City - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. In this episode we see how the Caldari treat the Gallente on occupied Caldari Prime, and how one Gallente fights back against the invaders.
This is in continuing the theme - the next episode, concluding the Trilogy of Caldari Oppression, is already recorded and is in post production.
I'm still working out why iTunes is not updating the feed. For the technically minded, the RSS feed used by iTunes is updating with the latest episodes, but iTunes is still stuck at Episode 16. As soon as I can get it worked out I'll get that feed working again, but in the meantime I encourage iTunes users to visit this page containing a list of all episodes so you can download any episodes you've missed.

Hi Mr Veda, I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the recordings!
I don't have any plans after finishing the Chronicles, but seeing as there are so many of them, this particular project will keep me occupied for quite some time. Beyond that? I know I've gained proficiency in both recording and production with each episode, and I'd enjoy putting that experience to use in other areas.
But, y'know, I have a day job and all that. :)

Don't know if you followed up with Random McNally's offer to start you on the podcast circuit to get your name out, but i had another idea that you may like. Pod and Planet is having a fiction contest. http://hullabalutions.blogspot.com/
i bet they would love for you to do some voice acting for the winning fics. you'd get some more exposure for evereader, and i the writers of the competition fics would potentially get a broader audience too. Just something I thought about.
Anyways, glad to see that the podcasts are auto-updating to itunes now, that definitely makes it easier to find them.

I would like to do an audio book, in fact I've been looking at two of the Eve novellas - Theodicy and Ruthless - as possibilities for a longer term project. Ruthless in particular looks like it would lend itself well to an audio format since it has a very modular structure with a good balance of dialogue and description.
What app are you using for the Android? I have an Android phone as well, I'd like to test it and see if I can determine the problem. Something made episodes 17 through 19 different. When the iTunes problem was handled I thought this was solved, but seeing as there are still issues I'd like to get this figured out once and for all.
Regarding the Pod and Planet fiction contest that Zaitsev mentioned - yes, I volunteered to record the final winning entry in audio format. I'm really looking forward to doing this!

Episode 21 GÇô The Speaker of Truths - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. This Chronicle is the story of the uprising against the cruel Heir Aritcio Kor-Azor, and the punishment in response to his sadistic rule.
This story has a special place in my heart, so to speak. When I first envisioned placing the Chronicles into an audio format, this was one of two stories that caught my eye as a candidate for recording. Eventually I went with what became Episode 0 - The Jovian Wet Grave - and I always wanted to return to The Speaker of Truths for recording. The message in this story, of cruelty and inevitable punishment as a consequence of that cruelty, is a recurring theme throughout Eve both in the lore and in the game itself. I hope you enjoy the story as much as I did.
Regarding podcasting applications, I downloaded one for my phone and it was able to pick out the latest episode (#20 when I tried it). It also just picked up this episode a few minutes ago. iTunes should pick up on that within a few hours, I believe - they don't make their updating scheme or schedule public, so if it doesn't show up today I'll dispatch the Elite Hamster Squadron again.
Thank you for the feedback, both in kind words and suggestions to make the recordings a better experience for everyone. For the curious, the next episode will be the sequel (of sorts) to this story - The Part Where I Play the Devil.

Episode 22 GÇô The Part Where I Play The Devil - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. As Orland Yormes noted, this is a "sequel" of sorts to The Speaker of Truths. Mr Veda, that particular Chronicle is an excellent choice and I would be glad to read it. Lack of dialogue is not a problem - in fact, one of my favorite Chronicles, the Methods of Torture (Caldari) story has no dialogue whatsoever and I think it came out quite well. However, since Myth of a Salesman is a rather short story I think I'll pair it with another story about the Broker... Big Fish, Little Fish.

Episode 26 - A World Where No Such Road Will Run - is now available at the The Eve Reader Website. This Chronicle is about the assassination of a high-ranking Caldari official... from his perspective.
Orland Yormes - You've edited your former post, but I made a list of the chronicles you've requested. In fact, I used one of your suggestions for this recording and another (The Human Painting) for an upcoming episode. I'm afraid The Dark End of Space is not one I can record. It is an excellent Chronicle but it is written in a style that deliberately shifts the speakers in a way that works well on paper but not in audio. The others, including Valkalears, I'm reading through as possibilities.
Momiji Sakora - That's an intriguing idea and I've sent you a mail.
Yes, the episode has another "advertisement" at the end. I like these, they're a fun bit of flavor, but time and creativity means I can't put one at the end of each episode. However, if you, dear listeners, have an idea for another "ad" then please mail me. I'd be glad to credit you of course.

Episode 29 is now up - the story of an injured starship crewman confronted by the immortal captain of his now-destroyed ship, and the capsuleer's quest to understand why the destruction of his ship occurred. You can download this episode from The Eve Reader Website.
Ironically, I had another episode recorded and was mired in editing... it just wasn't coming along satisfactorily. This Chronicle was suggested by someone, one thing led to another, and I think it came out very nicely. And, yes, I like using synth for capsuleers (and other neurally altered people in Eve). I think it emphasizes the "otherworldly" aspect of being immortal in such a dangerous universe.
Enjoy!

Why, I have... this! Episode 30 is now up - today's episode involves a mining station under attack by marauding pirates and one man's fight against them. Without giving away too much, if you enjoyed the last episode's use of an "ordinary" man and his involvement with the power of the capsuleers, you'll find something similar in this episode. You can download this episode from The Eve Reader Website.
I know I've mentioned in the past that I wanted to record one of the larger stories. The more I think about this, the more I've come to realize that it's too much for just one person to do... if nothing else, there are only so many "voices" I can create in one story before before suspension of disbelief becomes more difficult. Incidently, that's why I had so much trouble with a recent (and now shelved) episode. Therefore I'm considering inviting others to help with the recording of longer episodes, specifically where multiple actors are needed.
I'm not in a position to begin actual recording of this project, but if it interests you then please contact me via Evemail. If you'd like to talk about it at Fanfest then look me up and we can have a chat.

With the exception of the episode recorded as part of the Pod and Planet competition, every episode has been recorded from the Chronicles available from CCP's website. The simple reason behind this is because CCP has given me permission to use the story and fiction that they have created, but I don't have permission from EON Magazine or the authors of stories within that magazine to republish/record works that appeared there.
Now, if EON and the author were to provide me with their permission, then we could explore that option. If someone wants to facilitate that for a particular story then drop me a line and we can talk about it. In the meantime, the general Eve Chronicles give me plenty to work with!

I ask in part because I wrote the "The Rose's Bounty", which sadly was the last Chronicle that EON carried. I'm not sure how the rights work in this situation because there wasn't any contract for me to sign, so I guess I could assume that I still have it, or maybe CCP would have the copyright since EVE is their trademark. |

Let's see if we can get in touch with EON and find out their stance on the matter. I'd also need a copy of the story.

Injustice and inequality are a fact of life within New Eden, but what of those at the absolute lowest level of society? In this Chronicle, a simple business transaction explores the darker side of the treatment (and use) of those society has deemed too dangerous to publicly imprison. If that description seems a bit vague to you, well, then you'll just need to listen to the episode... and try not to think too hard about the salesman and the buyer of his services.
You can download this episode from The Eve Reader Website.
This is part one of the story. The Chronicle itself is split in two parts, and after recording both parts I came to the conclusion that a double episode with both parts would be overly long. Therefore, I've released Part 1 now. Part 2 has already been recorded and is undergoing editing.

Take an unusual main character, add in a non-Empire faction fighting psychic evil, artifacts of great power... and pamphlets. This was CCP Abraxas' first Chronicle, for the curious.
If I'm not mistaken, the adventures of the main character are continued in the Black Mountain series of Chronicles. If you enjoyed this story, I'd recommend reading those as well - it's a long series but a good one. And, yes, I've given thought to recording that series... although I'd need quite some time to record it all!
You can download this episode from The Eve Reader Website. I am also pleased to report that the Elite Squad of Hamsters assigned to the task of repairing the iTunes feed has reported tentative success, so hopefully this episode (and the prior two episodes) will appear in the feed soon.

In the lore of New Eden, both the Amarr Empire and the Gallente Federation share an uncomfortable commonality GÇô at one point in their histories, they were betrayed by a member of their leadership. Both the corrupt former Chamberlain of the Amarr and the former Grand Admiral of the Federation became hunted men within known space, evading those they betrayedGǪ for a time. Today's episode - "Taught Thoughts" - is the story of a classroom teacher fighting back against those that seek to revise history. I particularly liked this Chronicle because it deals with morals but it is not a black-and-white story about good and evil. Just because there are bad guys doesn't mean that there are good guys, and that's a lesson hard-learned as we all enjoy the shared universe of Eve.

You're welcome!
I keep wanting to try the Black Mountain series, but I just didn't like how the first episode turned out. I'll look into re-recording it, or finding a different one.
One issue with the Chronicles in general keeps bothering me. There has been a resurgence of lore within Eve over the last year or so but I haven't seen any Chronicles to go with this new lore. I would be happy to read some material regarding recent events - and if I'm missing something please point me in the right direction!

Shot down deep behind enemy lines just short of their assigned objective, a Caldari covert operations team races against time to complete their mission. This Chronicle - "For the State" - is just as much about their struggle as it is about the indomitable spirit of the Caldari military.

Look at that! Two episodes in one week!
Today's episode is the story of a young man with a talent for hacking into high security systems... and a pair of shadowy men who wish to acquire his services.
This particular story fascinates me because - without spoiling it - motivations and processes are deliberately left unclear. It also has a nice timeless quality to it - consider that when it was written, a particular skill and implants didn't exist in the game... and that's all I'll say, no spoilers!

I have uploaded Episode 43, Cities of Refuge. This story is about life after the re-taking of Caldari Prime from the Gallente, from the perspective of a young child.
In other news, the Pod and Planet fiction writing contest has closed and the winner has been announced - the excellent A Spider in her Web by Voodoo Williams. I am currently in the process of recording this story in audio format and will announce when it is available for download.
The Eve Reader also has a Youtube channel, which can be found by clicking on this link. This is so you can listen to the Eve Chronicles without having to download mp3 files or if you wanted to listen to just a particular section of a chronicle. By all means, find your favorite episode and leave feedback, and feel free to show your Eve and non-Eve friends!
Lastly, the Eve Reader website has been re-designed to be easier on the eyes and easier to use. If you notice anything amiss, please let me know.

I have uploaded Episode 44, A Spider in her Web. This story is the Grand Prize Winner of the Pod and Planet 2015 Fiction Writing Contest. This is the story of a man on the run from the alliance he betrayed... and the methods they use in their attempt to track him down.
I'd like to thank Cyrillian Voth and Elinari Rhodan for providing additional voices for the episode. Working with multiple actors is something I'm still becoming accustomed to, and I'd like to also thank Random McNally and Mike Azariah for offering to help with the podcast. Thanks folks!

Episode 47 is now available at the Eve Reader website. This is another double-episode of shorter Chronicles, Hands of a Killer and Doppelganger. This is another pair of shorter Chronicles, contrasting the differences between a regular starship crewman and a capsuleer pilot. These stories tie nicely together, beginning with ambition and ultimately with death - but a different ending, a different view of death for each of the characters involved.
It's nice to be able to bring in some of the older Chronicles. Granted lore-wise the capsuleer in each story is likely not the same person, but the attitude toward destruction is universal for our peculiar breed. We capsuleers, the immortals, view both death and those that die permanently as mere trifles.
I'd like to thank Meo Fafard for helping me understand how to pronounce one of the names in this story. Any mistakes in pronunciation are simply mine!

Episode 48 is now available at the Eve Reader website, a double-set of the story Eye for an Eye as well as the story Speaks and Walks.
Eye for an Eye was a fun little episode to record and gave me the chance to practice using sound effects recorded directly from the game. This was something that I did in a smaller way in earlier stories and would like to continue to do in the future. As for the story itself, this is one of the older chronicles but it has fared relatively well - this is a scene that could still be played out even today. Betrayal, loss of corporate power, finding new allies to aid in the struggle versus old allies... yes, this could be happening in New Eden even as we speak.
The other story - Speaks and Walks - is a story of a DUST mercenary and the horrific side effects of the original technology that granted him immortality. I found this story particularly fascinating due to the parallels that can be drawn from the soldier's conflict. Substitute in the stress of dealing with horrifying real-world events and you could have a model of someone struggling with the long-term effects of post traumatic stress disorder. Closer to our New Eden existence, substitute a cause in question - the why in Why We Fight, the who in Who We Fight For - and you have the root of every organized player conflict from faction warfare to nullsec sovereignty. There is always a risk of reading too much into a story, but having been in a position to relate to both of the scenarios above, this a story that called to me.

I have uploaded Episode 50 - Old Man Star. This Chronicle is the story behind the name of one of New Eden's most famous (and dangerous) systems.
Recently I received a request to put a short explanation at the beginning of each episode so the non lore oriented listeners can better understand the significance of the events in each Chronicle. I think this is a fantastic idea. I have placed a brief segment near the start of this episode and plan to do so for further episodes. I would appreciate feedback on this new feature!

Hi Zendane, I just stumbled across this stone-age forum thread: https://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=99006. Amazing, more than 12 years ago there was already a project to read the EVE chronicles that were available at that time. Sounds interesting ("audio with effects") what they had done. I don't know if those audio files are available anywhere or even if DJDoby is still playing. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know this, I thought it might interest you (if you didn't know it already). Keep up your great work!

TodayGÇÖs Chronicle gives us an insight into the mind of Tibus Heth, the man who rose to power as the de facto ruler of the Caldari State. Even the most powerful man in the State can find himself ultimately a victim of the very corruption he sought to fight. This Chronicle is full of small political tidbits and details that I would really like to see expanded upon in the future of the lore, specifically matters involving Roden, Intaki, and Tibus' actions at the end of this Chronicle.
On a side note, I had a chance to meet many fans of the podcast at Eve Vegas - I am humbled that so many people from so many different parts of the game enjoy the Chronicles. Thank you for the kind words and I look forward to recording more Chronicles for you!

Some of the Chronicles (such as Inheritance or the End of the World series) are galaxy-spanning yarns that dive deeply into the lore. Others, like this one - Spectral - are more "day in the life" sorts of stories. On a quiet space station, an old man begins to see colors and eventually people that are not there. It could be due to a malfunctioning vision implant, or another reason entirelyGǪ
Incidently, the story of Fermar (one of the people the main character meets in this story) is covered in "The Plague Years" which can be found here as text, or listened to as Episode 14 of The Eve Reader here.

With the recent interest in the events surrounding the Kyonoke Pit (and at the request of a long time fan) I have recorded the chronicle Kyonoke Pit. This chronicle tells the story of the events surrounding the biological plague at the Kyonoke Pit installation.
This Chronicle is actually one of the oldest ones published by CCP. In fact, it has now replaced The Prophecies of Macaper as the oldest Chronicle I have recorded. The story does give a tantalizing story lead from so long ago, and here we are fourteen years after the Chronicle was published, following up on these events. I for one am interested in seeing where CCP goes with this potential story in the modern game!

TodayGÇÖs Chronicle is perhaps the most famous of all of EveGÇÖs backstories GÇô the story of first contact between the Caldari State and the Jovian Directorate as well as the story of the first capsuleer. If a list ever existed consisting of the top five essential stories for understanding the lore of Eve, this chronicle would be on that list and probably at the very top of that list.
This Chronicle is such a prominent fixture of the lore that I used it for my trial episode, aka GÇ£Episode 0GÇ¥ when I first envisioned the Eve Reader podcast nearly four and a half years ago. So much has changed! In that time I have upgraded my microphone from a USB web camera microphone (which was already four years old when I started in 2013!) to a studio-quality Shure SM7B microphone. I also polished my editing and production techniques in order to create a cleaner sound with better production values.
While I was pleased with the overall result when GÇ£Episode 0GÇ¥ was released back at the beginning of 2013, it always nagged at the back of my mind. After all, I used one of the best introductions to the lore and turned it into an experimental prototype for the podcast. What if people listed to it and stopped there, with its rather scratchy audio and too-long intro and extro sections? WouldnGÇÖt it be nice to take such an important story and re-do it in a more modern format?
Thus the idea for redoing this Chronicle was born. For those of you who have heard this story before, I encourage you to share the link to this file with those who have never heard the lore before GÇô and if you have never read or heard of the Jovian Wet Grave, then turn down the lights, turn up the volume and listen to the joy and terror of the first ever capsuleer in Eve.
