I feel like an idiot, having plopped down the money to play EVE yesterday. I spent most of the night playing tutorial and I was excited.
And now this. Game has been down since noonish today (GMT+3 here) and it is now midnight. If this is a regular occurence, then I want my money back. CCP could at least use some common courtesy and post a notice about extended downtime. Perhaps a big fat bold notice on top of the website, or something along those lines.
Anyway, does anyone have a clue when EVE will be back up? I think the server is running, but I can only do the connect telnet thing from a machine inside the US. If I do it from here (Kuwait, Persian Gulf) I get nada, no response. Perhaps I am getting filtered?
And no, my firewall settings are fine, I didn't touch a thing, it was working all night yesterday...

The server graph at eve-i shows no crashes or decreases in players.
Chances are your ISP is blocking it.

Great. So my ISP just decided to block port 26000 yesterday, after I started playing. !@#$%@#$.
Does anyone know how can I change default server IPs to which Eve connects to? I can tunnel port 26000 to outside using SSH, but Eve seems hardwired to try 157.157.139.10... :(
And my ISP is gonna hear from me tommorow.

Works fine here. Oh, and you started just after a patch day--so get used to downtimes. But this has been the best major expansion in EVE history, with nearly no downtime at all. --

There are programs that allow you to trick games into using a proxy. Google for them. --

Any hints on where to find such software? Google is not helping much so far.

Have you tried Multiproxy? It has a habit of solving problems in a way I do not understand. It's like some kind fo wizard.

open your HOSTS fila and change eves IP to go to a different one, or if your using a router simply add it in there.

Contact your ISP helps sometimes.

Do NOT do this - this is not how to tunnel through a proxy. all it will do is cause your machine to look for the CCP server in the wrong place.
You can use proxy software but you will need two computers for it to work. The only advice I can give you is to ask your ISP to reopen port 26000, and if they can't/won't do it, consider finding an ISP that isn't so paranoid.
The chances are that they may just not recognise traffic on that port, and are blocking it assuming it's a virus or something.

Yah, no worries, I know how to get this working as I just did. However, it was a pain in the ass and tripled my ping times. What you do is:
1. Run PUTTY out to a SSH server somewhere outside your ISP with port forwarding - forward local port 26000 to remote port 157.157.139.10:26000.
2. Change your local IP to 157.157.139.10. Most home routers will ***** at you unless you also change the router to sit on the 157.157.130.x subnet for the internal LAN. The router might STILL ***** at you, because that address range is not meant for internal use.
3. Play Eve. Works, but hella slow.
Caveats: - this routes your traffic through your SSH server, so it adds overhad and most importantly latency. - you might have to fiddle with setting up an internal DNS and/or static routes at your local router to make sure traffic for 157.157.139.10 goes to YOUR machine and not the actual Tranquility server on the Net.
I also tried doing this without changing the local IP and making a mess of my LAN. Theoretically you should be able to edit compiled.code file in scripts directory of Eve. Inside that file are 4 instances of hard-coded 157.157.139.10 address. However, messing with it in any way, shape, or form makes Eve hang on loading. Either I am doing something wrong or Eve has some form of CRC checking on its files.
Finally, I decided to go ahead and ***** at my ISP in the wee hours of the morning. Surprise, surprise, tech support person told me they are aware of this problem and that most online games are not working right. They are supposedly working on the problem.
I call total bull****. DSL works normally for me, most ports open normally, E-mule works fine (uses high ports), my proxy on 3333 works fine, SSH works, web and SSL work, e-mail (POP and others) work.... what it looks like to me is that my bone-headed ISP decided to randomly block some high ports associated with certain online games, possibly in hopes of saving up some bandwidth.
Or they just wanted to completely **** off 80% of their customers who game online. Who knows.
Anyway, thank you all for the generous help. I guess I need to be patient and wait till ISP fixes things on its end. I can sorta play Eve but it is so unresponsive it is not worth it.

Frankly mate, I'd be delivering an ultimatum to my ISP if they did that - unblock port 26000, or lose a customer.
You're paying for an INTERNET SERVICE. If your ISP insists on blocking that port, you are not receiving an Internet Service, and as such, they do not deserve your money.
Don't put up with that kind of crap. Demand action, or exercise your right as a consumer to give your custom elsewhere.

that is how you can change how its "hardwired" to that IP.
I never said it was how to tunnel it : )

tbh that would be a very strange thing for them to do. I can only see it happening if the ISP is a 100%, no exceptions dedicated business only link. Even then it'd have to be some petty minded 'jobsworth'.
MMORPGs do not use much bandwidth. What little they do use makes them very ISP friendly. If asked I would expect that most ISPs will say that they love MMORPGs because the bandwidth requirements are so easy to handle. -- (Battle hardened miner)

That's possible but I'd leave any such ISP in an instant. Blocking a port just because you don't recognise the traffic or the number is outrageous. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Hah.
A little polite threat goes a long way. I basically sent their tech support a nastygram asking them to unblock the port or I will switch ISPs to their direct competitor. After I called on the phone and explained the problem again, they responded the next day.
They unblocked the port and then started to spin a story about how my personal firewall is to blame. Mmmm, right. It just happened to fix itself overnight.
Anyway, moral of the story is - don't take abuse lying down. After I threatened to switch they played ball... :)
Thanks for the moral support, I am now back in Eve.
