**** that aspect of every single patcher/installer so far. My C:\ drive is 11GiB in size, and has 200MiB free. My \temp is on X. My %appdata% is on D:\.
On that note, why can't I move the ******* cache? I can only log in on one account at a time due to disk space requirements on C:\. Pain in the ****. |

Nice to see the new patcher rolling over to tq use, last couple of times I've patched sisi it's been nice to see it d/l such relatively small amounts of data compared to some huge patches in the past, even when patching what I thought was a badly out of date client, should certainly help those with evil ISPs and harsh d/l limits by cutting out spurious duplication of files |

Is there a way to patch the payloads? I carry the game files on a USB stick because I tend to install everywhere I go.
I would love to be able to update the payloads instead of having to patch every client since the intial download. |

Wish there was an option to select where you want to download the content and where you want to install the game not just dump everything on C:\ cos in some cases people might have less then 4GB and wont be able to download the game at all. |

A workaround to this problem is to using "Junction Points" or "Symbolic Links" to re-route a folder on the C: drive to a filesystem on another partition or disk.
This effectively "tricks" the installer into using a different drive. A nasty side effect to this is that if a program calculates disk space, it will calculate disk space for the wrong disk (programs presume that a folder on the C: drive is restricted by the amount of space left on the C: drive. Symbolic Links/Junction Points break the integrity of this assumption) |

I would put this as a priority, having a default but selectable download location is mandatory for this game now.
Some of us like to have a small (or even FAT32) C: drive just in case a virus or Microsoft update causes a major problem with the operating system, it is then easy to wipe and re-install without loosing all our work etc.
My download manager always has a default to a selectable location and will ask and check if you would like to change this before a download commences, please put this in soonest.

... The only possible explanation I have for this, is that you, or whoever set up your machine, partitioned your hard drive like an idiot. No C:\ drive where Windows XP or newer is installed should be less than 20 GB. When Windows XP came out, 20 GB hard drives weren't even available, so really you should have a C:\ drive of 60 GB or more. My C:\ drive is 2 TB, but that's how I roll.
Unfortunately, CCP can't save you from yourself. |

I'm more concerned with WHY exactly the download is 4.5 gigs? Wasn't the download something like 200 megs a few short years ago? Looks like a lot of bloat to me. I would be interested in seeing a graph of the download size since launch (maybe overlayed with a graph of the installed+cache size.) Maybe also overlay that with a graph of standard $ cost of disk space over the same time period, and the cost of internet bandwidth. Would also be interesting to mark the graph with major expansions and patches (let the players come to a conclusion for themselves if the bloat has been worth it.) |

4.5GB is the compressed size, it's roughly twice that on disk. You can see for yourself by navigating to you EVE install. Most of it is art assets, with a few hundred megabytes for audio and video. The actual code and binary part of the game is ~100MB. The unpacked size of the client is about average for a lot of the high level visual fidelity MMO's; as an example here are some comparable metrics, taken from the relevant "minimum system requirements" pages on the providers webpages:
- World of Warcraft: 25GB
- Lord of the Rings Online: 7GB
- Rift: 8GB
There are of course others to which this doesn't apply, such as League of Legends, who have a 750MB requirement, but I hope you would agree that the visuals are vastly different in both games and so you can't really compare the fidelity of them and space requirements.
It's just the cost that comes from continued improvement. I've no doubt the installer size will increase as time goes forward, sorry! Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure |

Also I should point out, whilst the technology mentioned in this blog has been out for a few months now, and used by many people, it isn't the final piece of the puzzle when it comes to installing and patching; we're constantly working on improvements, such as multi language language support for the installer, patcher and Repair Tool, as well as general performance improvements for them as well.
There's also other, blue-sky-concepts that we can look into and work on, such as BitTorrent support and staged installation of the client, but more on these once there's something to show Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure |

Can't help with your other questions, but there is a good work around under Vista/Windows 7.
Disclaimer : Use these steps at your own risk - make a backup of everything if you are afraid of losing stuff.
1. Make sure the game is shut down. 2. Copy the whole cache to another folder, let's call this NEWFOLDER 3. Copy the path to the current cache folder to your clipboard, let's call this OLDFOLDER 4. DELETE the current cache folder 5. Open an elevated command prompt (Click Start, search for cmd, right click, run as administrator) 6. Type the following: mklink /D OLDFOLDER NEWFOLDER
You have now created a symbolic link to your new cache folder. You new cache folders now resides in NEWFOLDER (eating space there) but is still available where EVE expects it.
As an example, here are the instructions with my folder paths: 1. Make new cache folder at e:\data\evecache 2. Copy the content of old cache folder at C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE to e:\data\evecache 3. DELETE C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE 4. Open elevated cmd prompt and type mklink /D C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE e:\data\EVEcache
NOTE : The cache resides in a hidden folder C:\Users\admin\AppData, to get there, navigate to C:\Users\admin, then manually add the \AppData to your explorer address or change your explorer settings to show hidden folders.

Good Move ! As far as i understand this is well established methodology from SISI .... but it fits well for Liveserver as well.
Nevertheless i would suggest that you provide a third mode for updating:
1.) updater retrieves installed client version number and checks with the currently active version code from CDN if they match => no update needed installed version is valid
This what the updater already does to my understanding
if they dont match => my proposal would be, the CDN checks if the submitted to-be-updated version is already known by it, meaning there is already the list of blocks known how to patch version A into the currently valid version B
if the list of blocks is already known the CDN sends it to the updater. The updater doesn't need to do the checksum analysis and doen't need to build the list for data blocks to be requested, but simply takes the list of patch blocks from the CDN
if the list of blocks is not already known for the specific version to be updated by CDN, then the updater behaves the same as SISI updater/repair does. It does it full file checksum analyses, verifies it with checksums lists from CDN and build a list of blocks to be requested and patched into the old version to update it to current. In addition to patching the updater sends the block list for patching version A to B to CDN, so the next user doesnt need to it anymore and gets the block list from CDN server
Why should you implement this ? cause doing the checksum analysis takes quite lot time, which for minor patches exceeds the download for the patch blocks. You dont have to borther with 20 version patch builds or block lists anymore, this gets created by the users themself.
and if the strategy fails and CDN provides the wrong block list for whatever reason there is still method 3 of bruteforce analysis by the updater and creating its own block list. |

Nice. But I noticed some while ago that you can always use the repair tool to patch the game. Regardless of whether your installation is broken or you're just missing a patch, just fire up the repair tool and it will download the files that are missing, corrupt or outdated.
Some time ago I had constant problems with crashes that left my client corrupted. The 'generic patcher' ability of the repair tool saved me a lot of bandwidth.
So it isn't really new, but still nice. |

Same here, just tried updating again and got the "Applying the patch has failed, do you wish to launch the repair tool [etc]". Problem is, the repair tool repairs it to the TQ files, which doesn't help for sisi :P |

I'm assuming that clearing your cache is still recommended after patching? If so, when you are asked to download and install the patch, I would love a checkbox that says something like "Clear cache after patching". Then I won't have to restart my client again just to clear the cache. |

Hi Hiram, please file a bug report with errors and logs attached or if it is more of a usability issue, start a thread on the Test server feedback forum and explain how you would like it to be.

Good suggestion. We will have a look and see if this is something we want to do. We can see two options, one where you can choose where the downloaded data will be stored and the second is that it will just download the data in a temp folder next to the installer executable. So that if you place that on your D drive, it will create a temp folder on your D drive and continue to download there. No promises though.

There are a couple of issues with this, because BitTorret traffic is usually subject to trafic shaping by ISPs which means that they limit or disable it as a result. This would mean that if we rely too heavily on it, we would not be able to service all our players. How would you like to see this implemented? What would you like the default options for upload/download to be? There are also plenty of people out there who would not want to spend bandwidth uploading to others, so it would have to be user controlled. What do you think?

Any hope of having a client where the first thing it does is check for an update and prompts for installation. Instead of loading the game (which can sometimes take a while) then after the game loads it tells you to install the update, which downloads the installer, prompts you to quit the application, then makes you go through the upgrade wizard.
Instead when i click the EVE shortcut, as soon as I see the splash page it prompts me to update. I click update, then wait until the client is updated automatically and loaded. No more wizards, no more multiple prompts, just click, wait, play. Even better, the update prompt as a "install updates automatically in the future" check box so that I can skip the click part all together. Just a window with a progress bar, splash screen, client. |

This would be:
Setting the Language Joining / Leaving Eve-Voice Audio enabled / disabled Incarna (CQ) on / off
If you think this could confuse the less savvy users, then please provide the options to call your installer with a config-file.
eg: EVE_Premium_Setup_292761.exe -c myfile.txt -quiet
you could specify a certain syntax and one could save the file and just call the installer without having to answer the same dumb questions everytime. |

If you're making changes to the patcher I would strongly suggest something to make hotfixes easier to install. After each release there seems to be a hotfix, usually with fairly trivial changes, released every day for a few days.
This is extremely annoying when running multiple clients. I use linkshellextension to have junctioned folders so each of my eve accounts maintains separate settings and stores the last used username. When a normal patch comes out and updates the core game I only need to apply it once but the hotfixes need to be applied for every single account I run.

A few suggestions: 1. Download once, apply to all profiles or at least cache the download 2. When eve is launched check for an update before entering credentials, automatically apply the update, then automatically restart. Just make it automatic and the daily hotfixes won't be so bad. |

I'm in this same situation, and would like to see it fixed as well.
The problem is probably due to where the patch is getting applied. 'Normal' patches are detected by the Patcher, and applied as already discussed here. Hotfixes are detected by the actual client (eve.exe) and applied from there - apparently using the old logic.
A *real* fix would be to just have the Patcher somehow do this before launching the actual client. An interim fix would be one of your suggestions above, but requires intervention of another Dev team (not the ones working on the Patcher exe). |

CCP dev team, you are going to make many people happy, by adding a possibility to change the download directory and a possibility to change the default cache/logs/etc directory, which is now defaulting to "Documents and Settings/[User name]/..."

Doing it automatically is bad. You can leave the option on as default but leave the user the ability to switch it off if he/she/it so desires. Item 2 is my primary issue, more than the other two. I've had far too many bad experiences of applications generating tons of tiny little files in its install dir (hello, former There.com! *headdesk*). It gets worse in Win7 as they put harder write controls in place (I used to move the *entire* My Documents folder elsewhere - made backup a breeze).
SL has a similar directory cache setup as Eve, but at least its a monolithic DB-type file, and in recent iterations you can move the directory (though finding the setting is still a pain).

I'm interested in knowing how you patch partial files. I'm assuming there is some min file size in which this is implemented, due to diminishing returns, and that there is a minimum amount of data that needs to get replaced if even one bit were off. Are you splitting the file up into XX byte chunks and hashing it, then replacing the chunks that fail to match? |

So when I found out that the new updater is on Sisi, I immediately ran the SisiLauncher, let it do its usual damage of downloading stuffs, then went and did a hunt for launcher.exe. It was there. WOOT!
But.. err.. Minor problem.
When I went to launch it, I had two of my TQ clients up and running at the same time. The loader told me that it wanted to close the other clients. After a full release, I can see it wanting to do that (Kill all running clients) but why would it ask me if
A> The TQ clients live on another HDD B> It is querying the fact that another EVE.EXE is running outside its own EVE.EXE
Now, my three TQ clients are junctioned, so I know that I have to close all the TQ clients. But the SISI client isn't even on the same HDD.
Shouldn't the loader know which app to run instead of looking for all generic EVE instances? Especially if one is for TQ the other is for SISI? I'm not sure I want to close my TQ clients just to update SISI.
