Hello all,
I relatively new to eve and I am having a hard time deciding which race/ships i want to fly. Ultimately i would really like to become proficient in missioning running (security), and long term PVP/Incursions.
I chose Brutor because i like the culture/lore, but not completely sold on the ships themselves. Currently i am training my logisitc skills eng/electronics/navigation/mechanics, so i have not committed to a particular ship/race.
I am not looking for the best ship for mission or PVP, but more of what race has the best balance of ships for both purposes, from firgates all the way up to battleships.
Any advice/insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

All races and ships are viable for mission running and for PvP.
So, pick whatever you think looks best or whatever and fly with it.

Hey,
From what you just said about wanting to become proficient at mission running and incursions I would probably say go for Caldari ships as it has been said many times that they are the ultimate PVE ships and i regularly see mission runners in Caldari ships so they must be the better ones for the job lol. Caldar ships seem to be entering PVP a lot more too i have noticed although not as much a minmatar or gallante which still rule PVP in my eyes.
But that being said all races can PVE good just some do it better than others, i always find (just my opinion) that ships relying on armor have a more difficult time carrying out PVE tasks as armor doesn't inherently recharge.
I hope this helps shed a bit of light on the issue

picking the race you like the backstory of and then training the ships you want is definately the correct way to do it. lots of people pick based on the ships and then end up disliking their character in two years time.
I suggest you train for shield based ships for PvE. Caldari are a shoein, minmatar have some good shield ships too though. the cyclone has just been modified today, i believe, into a viable missile ship with a shield boost bonus, the maelstrom is great as well with a similar bonus. Ishtar Starfire: As a pure caldari pilot i feel that with the deployment of the new tier 3 battlecruisers you have given an unfair advantage to everyone except caldari pilots. an example would be like giving a fat kid a whole cake while the skinny kid has to watch and get nothing.

As mentioned earlier, every race has a good ship to run level 4 missions in. Though the ship you want to use can depend on the mission you are on and the enemies you face and how you want to face them.
Currently the Machariel (pirate faction) Is performing incredibly well (if not the best) and can pump out some serious damage.
The Nightmare (pirate faction) Is also performing incredibly well against Blood Raiders and Sansha's Nation.
The Raven Navy Issue (navy faction) offers great overall performance for half the price of the other two and doesn't require cross training if you are Caldari specialised.
If you can't afford or don't want to use these ships and would prefer to use the non faction Tech1 battleships then the Raven (Caldari) does very well indeed. So does the Apocalypse (Amarr) and I have no experience with the other two factions but The Dominix seems pretty viable still.
If you are after all gank/max ISK/hour ratio then I'd say aim for the Mach or NM as a long term goal, if you could own both then that's great as you can use the NM for blood raiders and sansha missions then swap back to the Mach for the others.
If you want to AFK the missions (kind of not possible any more due to the AI changes) then aim for a tanked drone ship like the Rattlesnake if you don't care about isk/hour and value defence.
Of course then there are the Tech 2 battleships, the marauders. They take a lot of training to get in to but can be very worth it once you get there. The Golem is a step up from the Raven Navy Issue and performs very well indeed. The Paladin is another beast for blood raiders/sansha's nation missions.
So all in all it depends on how fast you want to do missions, where you are taking the missions and whether you want gank, tank or something balanced.
For Caldari L4 ships aim for these ships in this order:
Raven -> Raven Navy Issue -> Golem
For Amarr L4 ships aim for these ships in this order: (note lasers are stuck to EM/Therm damage so only really viable for missions in amarr space against blood raiders and sansha's nation.)
Apocalypse -> Navy Apocalypse -> Paladin (abaddon is good if you have the cap skills though lacks the range of apoc)
As for Gallente and Minmatar I can't really offer much advice as I've never really flown their vessels properly.
Personally I chose Caldari due to the versatily of missile damage, no cap usage for missiles and I hate tracking disruptors oh and missiles always hit.
I used to fly Amarr only but got fed up of only doing em/thermal damage and their cap intensity. Though the benefits of lasers is they reload instantly (Pft! I love to reload during a battle!) and their Tech 1 ammo doesn't ever deplete and they can alter their optimal range by changing ammo type.
Edit: As you are already Minmatar and want to also get in to PvP then I'd say aim for the Machariel as your level 4 ship and then you will have the gunnery skills to effectively fly Minmatar ships in PvP. I love to reload during a battle!-áThere's nothing like the feeling of slamming a long silver missile into a well greased chamber... |

A lot of good information from Major Ocelot there.
I was going to make my own post, but I felt the OP sufficiently addressed my topic so as an addendum, if you're first long-term goal is to mission/incursion, should you spend lots of energy moving around and keeping your standings positive to the major NPC empires?
Myself I decided to go the Minmatar route into a Machariel, but I can't decide whether to move to Amarr space so when my Gallente/Minmatar rep tanks I'll still access the majority of high sec, or is there enough life in pve in the Gallente/Minmatar sphere that I wouldn't be disadvantaged by being excluded from Amarr/Caldari space?
Also just to add onto Major Ocelot, from what I understand the missile changes have made missile boats less desirable to the majority of incursion fleets, so if that's really what you want to do then going up the gunnery tree or into logistics would be a good way to go.

Heck, battlecruisers were rebalanced today.

Was going to say...That 2nd link is over 2 years old...That's 4 expansions and several patches old, which likely means that a shitload of ships and modules got either buffed or nerfed by CCP. |

Well. If you want to go high-sec Incursions eventually I would try to keep all empire factions friendly enough to enter their space. As Incursions are random so they could pop up anywhere.
