This is an idea borrowed from the old BBS game Tradewars (but then again, so is most of EVE).
Those with a very high security or faction rating would be offered, possibly by a high-level agent, a "comission" from an empire's military, or even CONCORD themselves.
These players would have special military equipment available to them to purchase. Furthermore, they could be given automatic notification of any in-system combat, and appropriate leniancies from sentry guns and NPC police to use good judgement to protect players.
This would have to be counterbalanced with some downsides. For example, if you were commissioned with the Amarr navy, it would significantly drop your Minmatar standing. Also, the negative security hits would be gigantic - any commissioned officer instigating an unprovoked attack would be stripepd of commission and hunted by police almost immediately.

In X - beyond the frontier, you could buy a police license where you got bounties for shooting pirates. But you didn't get any special weapons to help you.
I thought when I first started playing that it would be cool to play as the police, not sure how it could be implemented though. It would be too easy to abuse.
Imagine that you join a police corp and you're allowed to purchase the military spec weapons and kit, what's to stop you from trading these items?
Can you imagine what would happen if certain pirate corps got their hands on police equipment? I've never tangled with the police myself, but a friend of mine has after targeting a copper. 1 shot took out his shields and he was in an Exequror. He says he was lucky to escape and that was only 1 of them.
Unless there was a way of preventing the player from using police issued weapons when not on duty and preventing them from being transferred or sold and there was some mechanism to ensure that the power was not abused then I can't see it working.
The alternative would be to reduce the power of police weapons if players want to join police corps.

The idea presented is a good one. It also is an idea which can be put into place and be player driven.
One would need only set up a corporation with the purpose of policing or guarding regions of space where there is no current protection from governmental agencies (0.0 space). Then create a moderated channel for individuals to use to alert the police of suspicious characters or activities deemed illegal by the policing body. Then the policing corporation could take action.
The requests for help or assistance do not need to be limited to PC pirates, but for NPC pirates as well. This would be a way to help the Player Police fund themselves and increase notoriety. The Player Police could even charge for maintaining an active presence in a system protecting miners or escorting.
This would put the Policing section on equal grounds as the pirates from abilities. Also, you could expect support from players to build as the Policing Corporation proves to be an effective sa***uard.
The inclusion would special powers to PC police would give an unfair advantage to the PC police versus the PC pirates. In addition it would open the door for abuse.

I had a similar idea posted myself. and would invite anyone to join me in setting up such a corporation. I think it would become a very popular and a frequently used service. This may seem like Im advertising my corp but what the hell, I like the Idea and if anyone wants to join then please do. 'No-one can eat fifty eggs' |
