This is why i love hailing from the countryside. I always knew where our meat came from, since we had it all slaughtered at my uncles farm and delivered fresh and made our own mince etc.
Besides, while yes, the mislabelling is criminally wrong (who knows what else has been done on the side) a bit of horse wont hurt you.
That is unless you come from that lasagne from behind and it kicks you in the head.
Pro tip.

Honestly, between this travesty and 80% mislabeled fish in the USA, the entire world's food distribution industry needs a shakedown from top to bottom.
Tied in to this is how on Earth did it get to be that a Twinkie is cheaper than a carrot ?

Oh yes it can. That's the entire problem here.

Yes, this is exactly the point that I am concerned about. You can only find the stuff that you are actively searching when you do lab tests. Turns out that there was a criminally mislabeling going on on a huge scale, maybe for years. But all the labs were only testing for horse meat now. Who knows what these guys have else declared as meat and made us eat..ugh.

That is already happening as well.
Saw an article Friday on CNN about the 30% of 'mislabeled' or completely wrong drugs, but can't find the article atm.

This is another effect of Reagan's deregulation of the industries back in the day. What a destructive man he was ultimately. The "30%" claim is... Well calling it skewed is hardly putting it strongly enough. There are problems, however - And a lot oif it has been brought on by the move to re-import. Stupid and/or gullible people thought that importing someone else's drug policy* would somehow magically solve all the problems. Reagan's deregulation wasn't, isn't, the issue. Indeed, the Pharma industry is more tightly regulated now than ever in the past. There are, however, some nations which don't bother enforcing rules - their own, or anyone elses'. Caveat Emptor.
*When you import drugs from another nation, you automatically bring the consequences of their policies in with their drugs - Including their regulatory controls - or lack thereof. We have been strangely quiet, have we not? Not a story yet on if inspections are stepped up over here or not.
But that fish mis-labelling article I posted above is probably a hint of what the scale will probably be.
And it will probably be more frightening over here as we don't have half the dignity or class as Europe.

Again, there's nothing wrong with eating horse meat. If you liked IKEA meatballs, keep eating them and STFU. Had this not come out, you would never have known. People are acting like children who eat something and love it, only to find out it's something they thought they didn't like.
Here's a clue: THERE IS HORSE MEAT IN ALMOST *EVERYTHING* THAT'S NOT FRESH MEAT. If you buy frozen meat and expect it to be top quality, you're an idiot who knows nothing about food. It's hilarious that people have no problem with hot dogs. yet horse meat crosses the line for some reason.
Just eat dog food and get it over with, since everyone who's wigging out over this obviously has no clue what good food is. |

With all the horse meat in EU, one of the things I have not seen is the question of: Where did the horses come from? Are there some huge horse farms perhaps in Poland? And if EU raises so many horses, what are they for? We barely use horses these days, we don't use them for transportation, we don't use them for farm work, we don't use them for industrial work. Why is EU has such a glut of horses, enough to sell them to meat packers whole sale, year after year? Life is short and dinner time is chancy Eat dessert first! |

All it takes is one manager somewhwere along the line facing a shortfall of supply (which can happen at any moment, for any number of reasons, legitimate or not) to corrupt the process. He needs meat to fill commited orders, and if the shortfall happens, well, it only takes a bit of additional pressure,* or a lack of individual integrity, and BAM! Bad meat in the chain. It doesn't take willful or premeditated criminality. Just a weak link will do the job.
