Greetings children of Bob,
For the past year or so, SSC has used a fork of Grim's Wh-Space tool for mapping, mashing in corp management functions as we've needed them. Because I didn't want to host a WIndows server anymore and the old codebase was getting crappier with each new feature, I've started rewriting our fork into a new project called Eve W-Space.
Today, I am announcing the public alpha release focusing on mapping functions.
From the README:
Quote: Eve W-Space is, at its core, a wormhole mapping and intel tool for the MMORPG Eve Online. If you wish, it can be much more. It can be customized to fill roles from simple mapping applicaiton (with all extra features disabled) to the centerpiece of an entire alliance services infrastructure.
Eve W-Space is designed to be a single-tenant soulution hosted by a single corp or alliance. A fleixble permissions system allows for easily restricting data where needed.
The public alpha site is available at: https://alpha.evewspace.com/ Use the registration code: alpha
Eve W-Space is open source software, and code may be found at: http://marbindrakon.github.com/eve-wspace/
Most administration functions are incomplete, so running your own instance will require some manual admin work. Feel free to mail me questions, or ask them here. I will also provide a limited number of private testing instances for active groups. |

Known Issues:
* IGB automatic system addition sometimes fails to bring up the pop-up. The whole system will be replaced to fix this for beta, but it may appear more reliably if the IGB has focus when you load grid. Click jump, click the map.
*The "explicit permissions" option is shown to any member adding a map, this should only be seen by map admins as others will be unable to see the resulting map until an admin grants explicit access. |

Awesome Marbin :) Can't wait to get the old mapping tools tossed out of the window entirely as bugs get squashed and the new features finished. |

Good that you made it open source. New wormhole alliances now have a usefull tool right of the bat and don't need to develop one. I hope this helps get more people in w-space! |

Marbin's done a great job with this tool, everyone who's used it so far on our end only has good things to say, and he's been extremely responsive to all of our requests and input.
Keep up the good work!

SECURITY ALERT:
Please remember to generate your own SECRET_KEY for use in settings.py. Django uses that key as a salt for many cryptographic functions so the one from the git repo is not the one to use. Define this in local_settings.py to override any value in the git repo. |

this is a great tool, i have always wanted to have a tool weve hosted ourselves on our own server. It has a lot of stubs for corps to add in whatever they also want. once we finish tweaking this i suspect youll have TDSIN as a user |

The tool is probably great but you should really consider to give it a different name because the current one is unusable.
"Dude, did you put the sigs into w-space?" "Eh, what?"
This annoyed me with the old "wh-space" tool already. We just called it "the tool" to avoid confusion. The tool should have a distinct name that is not generic in w-space. . |

We just call it "the map" when referring to the map portion. Eve W-Space is more of a name for the collective set of tools.
I might rename it later, but you should look into customizing the templates for your installation as an alternative, for instance the banner on ours says "Future Corps Web Tools" instead of "Eve W-Space."

Man, this tool has taught me a lot. I've managed to deploy this onto Amazon's Elastic Beanstalk, using their RDS as the SQL database and ElastiCache for memcached (at least I think that part's working). The entire process taught me Amazon's infrastructure from scratch so I owe you a lot, Marbin. I'm running into a hitch with the general map settings portion of the site. In my copy, it throws a JavaScript popup error message about a problem loading the general settings. I'm not fluent in django enough to follow exactly how it grabs/stores those settings and I'm wondering if you've got any ideas as to what might cause this? |

Pop into #eve-wpsace on coldfront if you get a chance. But you will want to run something like Firebug to see exactly what error it is encountering. That popup is a generic indication that the server returned something other than 200 when getting the general settings page.
Set DEBUG = True to get a trace that you can see in Firebug by looking at the response.
The settings themselves are stored as key-value pairs in the core_configentry table, so ensure that the Map/fixtures/defaultsettings.json fixture was loaded after creating the DB. Bingo. I used Firebug to nail down that it was the general settings throwing the 500 because one of the key pairs didn't exist. Did a manage.py loaddata of that json file and bam! No more error. Now for more testing.
Thanks, Marbin! |

I'm working on a better way of handling default settings as part of making the whole thing more easily extensible, but I've been too busy IRL this week to work on it. Thanks for making this open source and able to be hosted on non-SSC servers. Clears up a lot of security considerations from using third-party hosted mapping tools that are also closed-source (regardless of how emphatic they are that the intel data is not being sold). |
