I'll be signing on w/ the Caldari Militia soon and wanted to check with the powers that be about the Blackbird fit I conjured up. I've flown a Blackbird in small gangs before with mixed success. I haven't lost one yet, but I've learned a few lessons, namely: survivability. What good is an ECM ship if it can't stay in the fight? Please note that this fit is max for my skills, and Tech II variants would obviously be better.
ECM: Before, I was fitting all 4 racial jammers, which left little room for much else. Since this fit is for Caldari faction warfare, I've fit Gallente and Minmatar ECM, along with a single multispectral. To decrease target lock time, I've added a Sensor Booster. ECM strength is increased via x2 low slots and x1 rigging.
TANK: Large ASB puts omni tank EHP @ 9,589. Can tank around 161 DPS.
DPS It's a Blackbird. Around 67 DPS w/ current skills and fit. Drone Link added to complement the range of Heavy Missiles so that this ship is well out of brawling range, sitting comfortably 50km+ away.

First off, dump the drone link augmentor. You're eating 50 valuable CPU for the benefit of being able to apply ~30 DPS slightly further. Also, the heavy missiles are doing pathetic damage. Only fit heavy missiles (or any weapon system at all, really) if you have spare fittings left over.
Fit a MWD. You need to be able to actually get some range.
A sensor booster is unnecessary with your base 106km lock range, especially with the scan res script. You need more ECM.
The ancillary shield booster is okay I guess, but fitting shield tanking mods is a bte ad idea when each one is a jammer you don't have. Further, the medium particle dispersion augmentor's drawback clashes with the idea of shield tanking. Core Defense Field Extenders increase shield HP as a percentage, but since you don't have any shield buffer mods these aren't doing anything for you
I'd use something like this. If you are willing to use expensive ancillary current routers you could swap the 800 plate for a 1600 plate and use light launchers instead of rapid light launchers, but that inflates the cost by ~17m which isn't really worth it. You can also swap out the trimarks for another jamming strength rig, or a couple targeting range rigs for resistance to damps

Thank you very much for adding an explanation w/ your fit suggestions. Makes it all come together.
I didn't like not having all 4 racial ECMs, and you've even added a 5th here. To be honest, I never even considered armor tanking this ship. Your fit seems to take advantage of everything the ship has to offer, and there's plenty of room for Tech II stuff down the road.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot! |

If S&M was a place to just post fits it would be a worse battleclinic (if that were possible).
If we're talking about a very small gang (and you aren't likely to see 5-6+ targets on field at once) a couple more multispecs would also work in lieu of a full rack of racials. |

Thanks, I'll give it a shot! The trick with the racial ECMs is that they are so much better than multispectral jammers that you should almost never use a multi. You armour tank your Blackbirds, but the real tank is in the jams. You do everything you possibly can to reduce the odds of a jam failing. Because if your jams ever fail, you are going to get primaried hard. And he's also right for only bothering with gangs of 5-6. If you ever encounter more enemies you'll never jam them all, and you'll get shot down fast. Funny thing about ECM: stay away from the Tech II. It has nothing going for it over the meta 4. Always meta 4 instead of TII.
The fit he linked is pretty standard. That's about what you'll want to go with. Also, if possible, you'll want to stay at range from the engagement. Range is tank as well, and if they can't get in range to shoot you, you're saving yourself. |

Since it looks like some good fitting advice has been handed out I'll pass along some flying advice that was given to me. I've found that flying an ECM boat is much easier if you're in a system with multiple tacticals and safes around gates, stations, and belts. I like to try to stay off grid but close to where the fight is anticipated to take place. Once the fighting starts, and you never want to be the first ship to warp in, come in at 70km and immediately align away from the fight or better yet on a course that will take your alongside it without closing range. If you don't have tacs drop one or two quick bookmarks as you are dropping out of warp. Preferably closer than 1 AU and I like to cut it much closer than that. Like above, once you land immediately align out and start jamming.
If one or more tacklers start to get near you and you don't feel you can successfully jam them immediately warp out to the bookmark you were aligned to. I strongly recommend warping to a celestial or other tac and coming back into the fight from a different angle. If you come straight back in from your first warp away you will very likely land back on top of the tackle you were fleeing from the first place and die.
If a retreat is called try to stay on field and have stragglers who are tackled call out who they are tackled by and then try to jam them out. If you pull this off you will be a hero. Note I have yet to successfully do this as it is a stressful position to be in.
My best advice of all is enjoy the tears in local when you successfully do your job. |
