Now this is a insane idea, so I'm ready for it to be shot down farily painfully.
The basic idea is for a module that, for a given weapon size, allow to fit two of a maller size, or 4 for a even smaller size.
Hull bonuses are related to the apropriate weapon size, so no changes there.
So in practise, lets say you have a large to medium adapter:
Fitting this into a battleship allows for a single slot, to fit two medium weapons on that slot, but these need to be identical.
The adapter can be assembled seperatly.

So you basically want the frigates and cruisers to become useless and no one would really fly them anymore?
How about no. |

I doubt frigates and cruisers would become obsolete, due to the fact that you rarely see weapons not meant for a given hull in that hull, due to the lack of bonuses.
You don't really see many autocannons in incursus now do you? :) |

a problem you might end up with is that between each respective size of weapon the difference in dps is not double (i'd need to check to confirm). you'd end up with bs fitting 32 small lasers or something doing crazy dps with multiple damage mods. |

This is already in the game (sort of). The worst medium and large guns of a given type are generally along the lines of "dual [smaller size] railgun". One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia Malcanis for CSM8 |

Yes, but the module allows you to keep the tracking and falloff characteristics of the original guns, which those modules do not, as they are altered. There's also the fact that ammunition is kept from their original sizes, as well as spending much more ammonition per shot (equal to the number of weapons present in the array).
and yes, while 32 small weapons on a battleship may seem excessive, most of them will probably suffer from lack of range/tracking while coupled to a slower/larger hull that can be disrupted/jammed, whatever. The fitting pre requisites also keep stacking, as would powergrid/cpu, and while that may not be overly noticeable for small weapons to say, small to large adapters, you also do not reap any of the benfits of the base hull (as they are tied to ship size = gun size).

You don't see mods on the wrong hull because with how things currently work, you'd have a raw dps and tracking increase for using smaller weapons for a minuscule amount of pg and cpu |

well, lessee...
Dual 150mm scout railgun tracking - 0.042 rad/sec Falloff - 6km Optimal - 13.2 Damage Mod - 1.65x
Medium Lead Charge 16 damage per shot (before skills, etc -- 10 TH/6KN) no range bonus no other modifiers
= 26.4 damage / shot (on paper, before skills, YMMV, etc) (8% higher)
150mm scout railgun tracking - 0.07 (40% faster) falloff - 6 km optimal - 13.2 damage mod - 3.025x
Small Lead Charge 8 damage per shot (before skills, etc -- 5 TH/3KN) no range bonus no other modifiers
= 24.2 damage / shot (on paper, before skills, YMMV, etc)
doesn't look that bad as it stands. Assuming my maths are right*, neither of these setups could track a frig running at above 1,000 m/sec at optimal (13 km). It'll be orbiting at 0.076 rad/sec...
*edit -- big if, it's been forever and a day since I've actually studied math, and I'm probably getting something wrong somewhere. The math looks more or less correct. If anything the above suggested would allow for frigates tobe lost on approach, but the dps solution is still sub-optimal, but it gives options and possibilities, aswell as market-movement for smaller weapons. |
