How do they work? I assumed that they auto-targeted like fof missiles. I had three (3) targets locked (NPC in a mission) and the defender missiles, if I clicked on them, gave me the message that there were no targets in range. I was 30 km out. If I read the specs right they should be good up to more than 70 km. (Also if there is a success kill ratio I couldn't find it) All in all at that range about 3 did fire but I was constantly getting hit with missiles. My set up was in a Caracal was 3 heavy missile launchers with Widomaker missiles and 2 standard with the defender missiles. I have asked on the help channel and tried the EVE questions and have gotten inconclusive answers.

They can be fired only when there's a missile coming at you. They won't hit any missile coming at you if you're at less than 20km of the npc firing missile at you. When you're farther (and the farther the better), you'll have a chance that your defender intercept the missile before it hits you, but if you're at like 25km you better have to fire the defender just after the missile has been fired by the ennemy ;). You'd be better using assault or rocket launchers for your defenders, for the better rof, then you'll be able to shot down more incoming missiles (being able to fire defenders more often).

Thanks for your reply. Let me see if I correctly understand you. Defender's target the incoming missile (with a 20km lag) but my rof is too slow to catch all in incomings. (If they are targeted manually just tell me and forget the rest of the post.) So at the range I'm using they won't work too well which leads me to ask if they would work better on a battleship where I'd be much further out (70km+) to catch cruise missiles and torps or is they a payload problem; that they won't damage the incomings? Thanks again.

The defendef missile targets the incoming hostile missile after it is launched. That means it can hit a missile after about 2 seconds after defender launche. With missiles that makes up to 20km or so distance if the defender should be effective.
You can notice that yourself that a fired defender flies of in a strange direction, than locks and homes at the incoming missile. This accounts for some overhead in time for the defender to actualy hit. The defender missile skill increases defender speed, so it takes less time for them to get to their target, the lock in time however is unchanged (in my experience).
Launcher rof affects how fast you can fire defenders, so in practice your effectivity. The more defenders you launch, the more missiles you can intercept. Keep in mind that rocket launchers (normal and named) can only hold 10 defenders, so in a missile heavy fight you need to reload them often and are 10 seconds without missile defense (during the reloading).
One last note, defenders target the closest missile.

Defenders are a bit borked since the big missile patch, they don't work well against the new fast moving missiles and under 20km it's a joke to try and use them. Even in a continous stream of light/heavy/cruise you might be lucky to take out 1 in 10 under 20km with them loaded into a rocket launcher.
I don't know the exact figures, but I believe a single defender will destroy a light and heavy missile in one hit, cruise take one or two (not sure on this), regular battleship torps take at least three defenders, and citadel torps are four or more (not sure here either).
They are auto-targeted, but a launcher full of defenders can only be activated when there is a missile on the fly toward you from a hostile that has you targeted. If your launcher is on manual it will fire one defender and shut off. If it's set on auto it will keep firing as long there are missiles headed your way when it comes up to the next refire cycle or until the launcher empties its magazine (which doesn't take long at all with rocket launchers).
For your application (Caracal) I wouldn't recommend using defenders, the high slots are better used for all out damage with heavy or assault launchers. The Caracal mounts a hefty tank and soaks up most missile hits fairly well for doing level 2 and some level 3 missions.

they are teh suck now, except in long range engagements, where a single defender launcher can kill LOADS of cruise missiles
and NEVER use standards for defenders - use rockets, or assaults if you can spare the grid.

They should change the system defenders are fired. Since the missiles patch, it's kinda hard to react to the enemy shooting missiles as they only fly for a few seconds now. Also there is a gap between missile volleys now. Missiles are more like artillery now. Fire... wait ... fire.
The defender launcher should work like this: Activate it in auto mode and it looks for incoming missiles. If there are some launched, it automatically releases a defender missile. And will be doing this until you turn it off again.
Don't suppose you can still use smartbombs against missiles. The timing with the new fast missiles would be very hard. The Auctoritan Syndicate Defenders of the Empire - Curatores Veritatis Alliance |
