Okay that was a real thread guys.
In the past week or so Bitcoins value exploded to 190 dollars per coin from 37 dollars in March.
I was legitimately asking whether anyone else had profited from this.
Also any theories as to why it happened. Been talking to some people who think it's due to the banking scare in Europe. |

As may be. Re-opening a closed thread will NOT make TPTB happy. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Well the thread was closed because I linked to a NSFW website, and seeing as I didn't do that this time, it should be okay.
Not really clear on how the mods operate here to be honest, but getting mad at this thread would seem pointless. |

I suppose it is. I really wish it would gain some more traction among the mainstream though. It's perfectly safe until quantum computing is released to the public, and guarantees complete anonymity. |

I've never done any bit coin mining but given the massive value increase it might be worth it, doubt the price spike will last or i'd be able to make enough coins to make it worthwhile. Don't you need dedicated hardware these days?
Heres an interesting article I read on it a few days ago. Seems that some criminal types are trying to manipulate the value.

BitCoin is ready for a collapse, I expect. It's far too late to get in on the ground floor, and value has increased to the point where profit-taking is going to tank it, hard. Maybe not just yet, but soon enough.
I've known about BitCoin almost from the start, but never really needed it, nor did I predict the run-up, so never bothered to to invest. For me, it's a spectator sport, with no favorites. Yep value is almost definitely going to tank. I cleared my wallet of the stuff a few hours ago. Currently exploring some investing options. If you ask me, it'll probably drop to below what it started at, due to the surge of miners brought on by the price increase.
And that article is interesting, I didn't actually know about the hackers. I sold them off yesterday for 185 a piece, so it can't have been that bad. |

Huh? I wasn't regretting selling them. Simply commenting on the price.
The risk-reward ratio was too bad to stake it out. As far as I can tell, selling was a good choice.

Oh God.... i just had an image of some of the fools i knew at Ox who were on their year abroad from Harvard Business when they're running this stuff in 20-30 years.
Bitcoin might actually get accepted. Although 20-30 years is a long time, and currently older than the internet itself. So who knows...
Scary thought though.

I don't get it, I've been reading up on it for hours today and I honestly don't get it.
Programmers made a virtual currency that is a criminal/libertarians wet dream and is backed by nothing and accepted by only people who are already invested.
Isn't this almost exactly by definition a Pyramid scheme?

Pretty damn close.
It is accepted by a number of vendors - mostly of shady stuff - and a very few vendors will accept nothing but BitCoins. So it's not entirely shady. Just damned risky. The only thing which keeps it stable is confidence - once/if that goes away, it'll fall like a brick balloon. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. Yep, there seems to be giant fluctuations now. Ranging from 250 to about 90. So glad I sold.
Bitcoin itself will probably take a huge credibility hit due to the seemingly random flux. |
