Death of the PC
Hmmm ... thoughts?
Though I can understand it, it does not bode well for my gaming habits in the future ... Inner Sayings of BrujoLoco: http://eve-files.com/sig/brujoloco |

Interesting, but perhaps an over-broad conclusion. PCs, in my estimation, are going to become comodity products where broad equavalency will exist across brands, making name brands more-or-less irrelevent. Kinda like appliances, in general terms.
I don't see the PC vanishing, but I do see it being side-lined to more niche uses. Like gaming. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

I have an issue with this. Its written by forbes.
'Nuff said.
The consoles are becoming mini PCs, the next gen (PS5 whatever) will probably be upgradeable even.
Handheld gaming is a quick "jump in, get out". Smart phones are great for email. But i need a PC to work on. When i have oodles of documents open, i need multiple monitors that only a static system can give me.
Been through these scares before, PC will trim sails and carry on and there will be a happy merger until everything goes VR. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

PCs won't go. Because tablets are PCs too.
But desktops won't die either. They cater to a growing demographic, AKA gamers. While in terms of the entire market, they are shrinking, there will forever be this small, but growing demographic.
I think eventually TV hooked consoles will become irrelevant though, especially when things like the Oculus Rift are already being developed for the PC. |

If a system can do a cad/cam 3d render of an entire skyscraper, I wonder what it could do for your games..? Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Last year we had to do some work for a client who was big in architecture.
You should have seen the setup they had for rendering. I think they had a baby super computer somewhere on site. Rendered half of New York city in a heartbeat in HD resolutions and didnt even stutter. Fully 3d too.
I remembered thinking... we need this for GTA lol. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

I mad jelly of all this. Using a super ****** laptop to do all my gaming at the moment. Maybe I'll finally get a decent setup once I move into my dorms in September. |

Most people who "predict the death of PC's" don't actually use PC's. They feel fancy writing articles on their ipads and have no clue what actual PC users can do with, well, a PC.
And Dell being glum isn't a big surprise. Their consumer branch is an unmitigated disaster, a real hazard zone. Their customer support is woeful and the price/quality ratio of their stuff has been going down the drain for years, if it even could get any worse. Their treatment of Alienware should say enough about how they think about consumers.
Their business branch used to be their cashcow, but recently they've been dropping stuff there aswell. The company is being run by people who prefer Apple products over pc's and it really, truly shows. No wonder that they're being confused about why it's not doing very well.
That said, the consumer PC market for ready made OEM's *is* dwindling. However, the individual parts market has been pretty stable for years now, even growing (as far as i know) because most people who want to use pc's are shifting away from the ready made models. The people who used to buy those for convenience don't really want PC's anyway, they're using tablets and other easier devices now.
Personally, i think that the time of those OEM's is simply over, but instead of going quietly they're pretending that the entire PC market is collapsing.

Computing has been converging for years, cloud computing is making it such that we are in a way back to using mainframes. Dedicated Processing and Date storage installations with the PC in front of you as a mere terminal to access those mainframes.
With the PS4 streaming games for the PS3 it too is just an access port, without market demand to prop up R&D we could end up with stagnation in PC development as resources are diverted to virtualized machines in Mainframe's.

I enjoy this viewpoint. its easy to understand from a wide angle of reference. Take away all processing power from a device and use it as a terminal.
It would also mean the whole world would be covered in a semi permanent wireless data grid and you would be just buying a glorified handheld wifi monitor.
Couple this up with recent developments in ultra slim monitor technology, and some of the research going into fold able screens, give or take a couple decades and we could well be in for a surprise.

dell hasnt known what its been doing for years now.
nothing more than fear mongering.
PCs are cheap fast and low power compared to the shiny devices.
typing more3 than a few emails a day by jabbing at a piece of glass gets old fast.
PCs are going no where, EVERYTHING that is creating for the other devices is done on a pc or server some where.
totall rubbish article.
I should also mention that PCs are far better at dealing with heat - which is one of the main reasons they are so much more powerful. ever gamed on a laptop or tablet? turns into a damned hairdryer after 5 mins http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg

Has anyone checked what's the average age of PCs today? Because, from my limited experience in a crisis-harrased country, people is keeping their old PCs forever. New computers? They're harder to sell, but because people is too busy buying food and paying back mortgages, and also because the old machines still work.
Anyay they're right to point that Windows 8 is a disaster. Thanks God it still haves the desktop!
(When we updated one of our computers at work, I would chuckle each time I had to shut it down by navigating three bloody submenus... then i made an acces to shutdown.exe and put a big red button on the desktop -never used the other interface, whats-its-name).
PS: we updated it from Windows 2000. And my computer at work still uses Windows 2000. The Greater Fool Bar-áis now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden!-áIngame chat channel: The Greater Fool Bar |
