So, I came back from an Eve-break, and decided the hauler lifestyle is not for me this time around...so going to dip my toe into some throwaway frig pvp...
Last time I was here, was pre frig balancing, or just after, and I was mostly into hauling, so didnt pay much attention.
I have looked around on the forums, and it seems that the rifter is no longer "favoured" as the minnie throwaway frig. Opinion seems split though, in game as to whether the rifter is still fine, and the slasher is just not as pigeonholed as it used to be, or, whether the rifter has been replaced by the slasher.
Would you still recommend a rifter as a newbie pvp frig? (I am not particularly stuck with one race....up until last night I couldnt even fit an AB or web!! Although, I had a pvp char a few years back who was very attached to ruppies, so would like to go minnie again if possible)
Battleclinic fits seem a bit...meh,at least the recommended ones, so if anyone has a low SP requirement frig fitting, I would also appreciate that. |

Slasher is a good ship. Rifter is largely obsolete now but its still not to bad IMHO. Look for rifter Drifter or an old blog for decent fittings. But tbh the joy of the rifter is you can build it however the heck you want. Shield, armor, nos, neut, rockets. Skirmisher or brawler. Lotta options with the utility mid and high if armor tank it. can go active tank, passive, or oversized passive for both armor and shield. Or you can run no tank at all other than a dcu like the old go on fleet zergling doctrines. So uh, sorry, but part of the flying a rifter lesson is learning to fit them. But I digress. The slasher shares a lot of the rifter utility but trades some beefiness for mobility, so fly em both. You're gonna lose a lot of ships anyways so get used to it. Thanks for the reply..
I have a rough fit for the rifter, and I have DL the Rifter drifter guide already, as even its out of date I thought it would still be good.
I remember from a few years back that the rifter was a bit of a swiss army knife in that you could throw anything on it and it would work, I just wanted to make sure it wasnt completely obselete now.
I will look at the slasher too, I just have a soft spot for Optimus Prime. |

Well the rifter is kind of obsolete now but that's cause everything else got buffed. But the ship itself hasn't changed a bit so you can still fit it however you want. This Space Intentionally Left Blank |

Hybrids are good in the small size at the moment. At least think about Incursus or Merlin. Minmatar is no longer dominant in frigates (not saying the others are though).
To answer the topic, I find Slashers harder to kill than rifters. Hooray, I'm l33t! -á(Kil2: "The higher their ship losses...the better they're going to be.") |

Thanks, I will have a look at the incursus, as I mentioned, I have very few skills trained now, so its fairly easy for me to swap across, and the Incursus is a sexy looking ship, and if you are going to get blown up, then you should at least look good while exploding! |

Slasher by far. 4 midslots for oodles of EWAR or shield tank. Here is my favourite slasher fit atm:
Slasher: I like EWAR
Highs: 150mm Autocannon II x3 (RF Phased Plasma) Small Unstable Power Fluctuator I
Mids: Experimental 1mn Afterburner I J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I X5 Prototype Engine Enervator I Balmer Series Tracking Disruptor I (Tracking Speed Disruption Script)
Lows: Damage Control II 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plate I
Rigs: Small Projectile Burst Aerator I Small Trimark Armour Pump I x2
Downgrade anything you cannot use/afford to the appropriate level. This fit is great for getting in close on laser boats and shutting them down with your neut and TD. You can also kite blaster boats at around 6km (edge of neut range) and keep their damage off you by loading the optimal range disruption script into the TD.
I wear my goggles at night.

The slasher is a good frig but has less options to fit it compared to the rifter.
Even after the re-balances it still does what it always did just means now you need to learn how to fly it as it is no longer the IWIN button it used to be. (not that it ever was to those in the know) That is the Way, the Tao.

Actually, yes it was an "I win" button. For example, there was no version of the Tristan that had a chance against a properly fit rifter. (We tested it out many times.)

The rifter was not an IWIN button. Plenty of properly fit rifters died to merlins tristans and occasionally lost to punishers or incursus. Now the ship is falling on hard times. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=53815&#post53815

Yes it was. We tested it out quite a bit against the Tristan. The engagement envelope of the rifter was enormous. Everybody knows this. And yes, it's fallen on hard times. I hope it stays that way for the same amount of time that it was "king of the hill" tbh. |

tbh this. There were VERY VERY few ships (with a specific type of fitting) that could top a rifter, and those that did kinda sucked at everything else. In the hands of a skilled pilot the rifter WAS unstoppable. Now, its pretty much a steaming pile of crap in comparison.

There really weren't as many competive ships at the t1 level. But the rail merlin and the rail plated tristan could both be as effective as any rifter fit. I actually prefered them but it might be because the rifters overblown rep meant I would get more fights. Bah I never had problems kicking rifter arse in the old merlin.
Punisher was a bit trickier but doable once you learned how to fly it properly. (worst case was the rifter ran away)
The rifter was OP compared to many of the T1 line up. It was the easiest to fly however which is what lead to the perception that it was the best.
Now the rest of the T1 fleet has been brought up to the standard but it can still do what it used to do. But it requires more pilot skill nowadays. The rifter still does LOTS of things well. It's just that most of those specific things can be done by other ships better now. But given the flexibility you can come out on top.
TBH I feel the slasher was a lazy pickup by CCP. They basically said lets make a shield rifter and swap a low for a mid to give it more control and the speed of an attack frig. Saw this a mile off. However end result is a nice frig but it has a lot less flexibility in fitting than the rifter does. Some of that inflexibility is made up with great base speed though.
All in all I will continue to fly both and still kill **** (hopefully) That is the Way, the Tao.

What about the Breacher? Imo it outperformes the Rifter in EVERY way! Good tank and decent DPS if brawler fit. Good mobility and range if kiting. Imo its the best frig Minmatar has to offer.
Its all about make good use of your ships strengths, the Rifter have none. |

To be fair though the tristan was never that great so to use it as a base to measure another ship is not a great idea. Oh PLEASE!!! CCP Fozzie Can I haz a Navy moa....... |

I think both ships have merit, and how you fit and fly each is Gunna be the deciding factor. Having said this, since the changes - the Slasher has become a very effective T1 frigate. If flown right it can give hybrid fits a very difficult fight. With a neut it can really stress a Gal and/or Amarr frigs capacitor. While the rifter may have been brought slightly closer to the Earth - the Slasher has gotten a little closer 2 the heavens. So in the end - I'd say the Mins got two good usable frigs, which is a nice problem to have. |
