After reading a lot and trying to get this scan stuff working I cam with one thought that I would like to ask the experts because I never saw anyone talking about this.
It is now clear that all probes do have the famous "plate" or "plane" that is somewhat 1 or 2 au up and down the probe, soo it does NOT scan in sphere but in a circular plate shape.
Doing a lot experimentations, after a lot of trial I was able to find my shuttle and close on it using several 12au and 3 au probes. Than I tried again and I was not able...
This bring me to one question... when we launch the probe does the plate "attitude" or plane stabilizes with the direction of the camera? very much like the standard scan work? or does the plate stabilizes in the same plane as the entire solar system? this is a must to know answer because make all diference when using them? I am still going to test this theory but I urge more experienced player to send their feedback as we can confirm this. Please help on this.
Also I would like to know if there is anyway to choose a diferent iten to scan that is not in the list that is given to us after clicking on analise button. For example I saw several good drones floating around somewere, I would like very much to cloose on them.
Thanks

My original thought (and I still hold on to this in some ways) is that the plane of the scan is defined by the three probes - ie, if one of the three points up, the plane is pointed at that angle.
However, I haven't been able to prove this, and I'm beginning to think the plain (no matter how the probes are oriented) is parallel to the solar disk (where the planets are)
Anyone else give this any thought/exploration?

I have made 2 testswith 3 probes at same spot and 3 probes on diferent spot. In both cases I used the scaned to close to 5 degrees in the "target" in order to have the line of sight pointed to it and launched the probes. In both of cases I was unable to detect the target wich was my shuttle. Soo the theory that scan plates are stabilized in the direction we are looking is WRONG.
I dont understand how this is so f$%#$% difficult.

Knowing CCP it would be simplest to code and least usefull for player way: parallel to the game "vertical" axis. If you stop your ship it alignes horizontally even in systems where ecliptic is at high angle. I think it's this plane which is used in scanning.

Would be nice to have a comment from CCP explaining why they did this to probes. It would have been much easier to code if they just scanned in a sphere and much more useful to the players. I simply cannot understand why they did this. The mind boggles. Boggles the mind does. *eye twitch*
