I was looking at a blueprint for a Moros the other day and I noticed they require stuff like engine parts, armor plates, hardpoints, that type of stuff, and not minerals. I thought it was pretty nifty. I'd like to see this expanded a whole lot, and this method of construction brought into service for the smaller ships. But I'd also like to see something different and more intricate! Lets say I'm building myself a Megathron. I like fast ships, right? Who wants to go slow? Not me! Well, lets say it requires eight peices of Battleship Engines (because there are eight exhaust ports on the Megathron) as part of the construction. Well, to make my Megathron faster, I could just go out and buy myself eight peices of Advanced Starship Engines to use instead of the normal ones. It'll cost me a couple milion more, but hey, It's customized! And well worth it.
Say I don't want eight high slots on my Megathron. I'm a little short on Isk and I really don't need a misisle launcher, so I can only throw my seven Battleship Turret Hardpoints in the construction bin, and skip the missile hardpoint that cost me 10-5 million (I don't know, all the prices need to actually be figured out correctly)
I think you guys get the point that I want advanced configuration in starship construction. It would open an incredible new realm into the market: personalized trade! Of course you coud only sell standard models on the market, forcing sellers to negotiate prices with the buyers personally, based on exactly what you get and what your client is willing to pay.
Furthermore, you could custom build your own ships to exactly fit your needs! How cool would that be? I'd love to do this. Maybe I could have an eight slotted Rifter that suffers from severe structual weakness. Better not let 'em get past my shields, or I'll snap in half. I could have an Iteron 1 that carries an exceptional ammount of cargo! Better take those curves easy, my cargo might tear its way through my paper haul. Hehe. Just a few ideas for balancing.
What do you guys think?

You realise this would just lead to people creating super expensive uber-ships don't you? Stuff like top speed 500m/s, 24 hardpoints, 10000 armour and shield, aligns as fast as a frigate, etc etc.

not like this, but afaik it's somewhere in development
afaik it will be possible not before than Kali, to customize the BPOs. you can research the BPOs in may directions, and being able to make induvidual ships. Weenies test. Geniuses solve problems that arise.

It wouldn't lead to uber ships. Of course there would be limits, silly. It should have been so numbingly obvious.

I get and see your point, and of couse there are limits, you can only have max of 8 slots of each low mid and high, so your be limited to that, I say yea build differ parts for the ships, but make it so you can't only have what you ment to be, and not have it what could be, like if the ship only had 3 hard points then you have to have 3 hard points, and so on, but make it so if you wanted a stornger shield recharger then change your part out, but make it to it takes away from somethng els, like your armor or power or cpu you get in the after the ship is build.
Say you wanted a stornger armor, well your can take out some cargo space and put a stornger armor on there.
This could be a good thing but you have to think about it first.

I love the idea. I cant count the number of times I'd looked at something and said "Wow, what a great ship.. if only it had.. an extra low slot instead of that mid slot. Or maybe the ability to carry a handful of drones."
While you could let people alter BPOs this way, that sounds like more a recipe for disaster than requiring individual BPC alterations. It would also be great reasoning for me to have to crank up my <insert race> starship engineering skill to level 5.
And if you've got a faction frigate, where your ship requires two racial skills? Yeah, man. I'd put Minmatar and Gallente engineering to level 5 just to put a decent drone bay back on a Vigilant.
It would be an excellent time (and ultimately, resource) sink, as your tweaks to the base design increase the material needs to construct it, perhaps exponentially. I wouldn't mind burning nearly a month on design alteration, even if I do end up having to sink 5x the minerals into its construction.
It would open a whole new player market - ships built to spec.

customizable ships seems interesting, but everything needs balance, they can only be so powerful and have so many slots available, and quite frankly, it'd sure confuse a person really badly if a Raven had the same powergrid as an Apoc due to a customization..

I always wonderd what AFAIK meant too.
And everyone seems to be just concentrating on the slot configuration. I had stuff like extra base armor/shields/cap recharge and speed and stuff in mind too. All that stuff.
I like the idea of having a hauler that used the technolegy used to construct cargo cans. I could have lots of base cargo room, but I couldn't mount more secure cargo cans or carry certain cargo.

Problem is that 1 person will figure out 'The perfect setup" ...and everybody will buy that ship and nothing else.
Reminds me of the B class races in Forza motorsport Try to find another car than the CRX ...ya wont cause the CRX is the best car for those races. Whats the point in having 4 different races when everybody is flying the same ship.
Nope i would rather see some external customization like colours, corp insignia,or even a Quafe sticker.

Isn't EVE's strong point supposed to be that "there is no best?" I'm sure the genus's at CCP could get 'er done!
Reguardless, how differnt would that be from everyone flying the exact same ship nowadays with absolutely no possible chance for base configuation? Open your mind!
