I'm a big Guild Wars 2 fan and while I know there isn't much interest in casual play in Eve, something the game would benefit from immensely that GW2 has is an "action" button.
Here is an example... what is the most likely thing you're going to do with an unlocked enemy ship? Lock it. Action button could do this.
What do you do with an enemy wreck? First you lock it, for tractor beam purposes. If it's already locked, you loot it. Action button could do this as well.
What do you do with an empty gun? You reload it.
I could go on. Having to go through a right click menu (which can potentially change my overview) or have a dozen bound keys to get basic things done, is like playing a game from the 90's. Even "somewhere" is a real place. |

Making the UI more accesible is a goal that will achieve mostly good things, but oversimplifying it could have adverse effects. Make it idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot. |

Ok, but would an "action" button be oversimplifying things, and what possible adverse effects can you think of? Example 1: Lock up friendly during a battle... press "action button." Now instead of providing remote repairs you shoot him/her.
Example 2: You have an AWOXer in corp... you lock them up... press "action" button... you repair them rather than shoot.
Example 3: You have an enemy... you lock the hostile up... press "action" button... you apply weapons, mods, and all the other good stuff... including your MWD. You sig radius, now very large, allows the enemy to score clear and direct hits which leads to your demise (because being small is the only defense you had).
Example 4: You are chasing after an enemy in an interceptor... you get in range... target lock... "action" button... you apply your warp disruptor but you also begin to directly approach your target rather than keep up your manual orbit. You get instapopped because speed and range dictation are your only means of defense.
Example 5: You are flying a frigate whose fit is not cap stable. Some micromanagement of what mods you have on at which time is required to keep from being capped out. You press the "action" button and everything turns on... you cap out and are uselss.
Point is, there are way too many commands and mechanics to simplify into 1 or 2 buttons. EVE's UI may not be the best... and it most certainly isn't elegant... but that's because it is very difficult to cram so much information and control into a simple, easy to use and understand system. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Yet another button with which to confuse the bejesus out of new players. I can hear the forum cries now:
"What the hell does this button do??? It seems to do something different every time I press it. It's making me so mad. I keep dying because of this stupid action button. Please, Please, PLEASE remove it from the game. It serves no purpose. There are already buttons which do precisely what I want them to. Why on earth have a button that does something different every time I press it?"
and so on.

And of course then CCP should release another patch to make it optional and add yet another "disable action button" checkbox in the configuration. |

While we-¦re at it why not just be able to set "autoplay on" and you watch how your pc plays eve for you? Ofc we need to be able to adjust the program playing for us to our likings. Like 'Stay in highsec for mining', 'Engage all member of active wars with a (again adjustable %-rate) 10%-likeliness of losing ship' and so on - only YOUR IMAGINATION IS THE BOARDER!
Seriously, every time i think i-¦ve seen everything in EvE someone crawls out under his rock and proofs that it always can get worse. For Hire Psychotic Monk for CSM |

This is why I didn't suggest it activate modules
There are certain simple things that you want to do 90% of the time that shouldn't require going through a menu or specific keys. It doesn't need to do everything and become confusing. Even "somewhere" is a real place. |

i do not wish to troll.... but...
infront of you are alot of action buttons.... called a mouse and keyboard.
these alloiw you to select anything you can do with eve...
and alot of things you use are situational...
i have to say i do not support a "1 button does all" job. |

Strange, but I could swear the locking mechanism in EVE was already pretty simple. The complexity of what you can do to a target after it is locked makes an 'Action' button dangerous to use and hard to code without looking at all possibilities one can want to do and providing options for them. No, the current set up is quite suitable for the game. |
