As some of you may have played on the console or the pc, One game caught my eye on a perfect integration of dust into eve combat. This game is the great game "Star Wars Battlefront 2" its space combat is what i would see as the perfect integration of dust to eve.
Here is a link to a video to give a brief idea of what I'm talking about. Link!
This game give interaction between boarding and launching of ships and a way to weaken a ship from the inside without major interaction by eve pilots.
Boarding ships would only be available on dreadnoughts and larger type ships.
As these seem like the only ships that can sustain a large amount of beating before being destroyed.
Each ship takes about as much space as a drone since it would only seat one dust player. And depending on the ship it could fit more of these small ships into the fleet. \
Maximum amount of dust fighters in the ships
Dreadnought: 50 Carrier: 100 Titan 300
These ships would be available for dust players at a minor rent price. As not all dust players are optimal. If they could not afford a ship they could board a Shuttle. able to carry 10 Dust players into space.
Types of Dust ships
Fighter - These are roughly the size of Medium drones. 30/dps Medium speed Scout - These are the size of small drones 15/dps Very fast Bombers - the size of Sentry 100/dps Somewhat slow. Shuttles - the size of an average faction shuttle in eve. 20/dps (deck guns) slow.
These ships can fire at other dust players. As well as on eve ships. having the small size their damage would be that of drones and very small ships. These ships can be affected by smart bombs and able to be locked by frigates. But these ships can attack any ship that they fly up to, but can only board the larger ships.
Boarding When boarding a enemy dreadnought larger. dust players will have access to destroy or hinder different ship structures. such as shields, propulsion, and guns.
Defending Players can have the same classes in Dust. with the addition of the engineer class 10 people being a designated engineer. ( To prevent total depravity when being boarded.)
Engineer This guy will probably be the best payed dust player as he not only keeps the ship flying. But also can repair the structure of the ship itself. If the shields are being warn down from outside damage to the ship. He can enter the shield generator room and begin buffering and repairing the shields manually rather then relying on shield boosters form the eve pilot themselves.
What if the host ship is destroyed?? In a fleet battle with dust players. The host ship is where the players would get their clones to continue fighting. If the host ship were to be destroyed. the players would have no more clones to return to when dieing, leaving them to find a different ship in the fleet. or to be located to a different fight all together.
How would a dust player join into one of these fleets?
Simple. Allow the dust player to opt into sending a Eve Corporation Invitation request rather then the Dust Corps. Giving him the ability to join in space battles. And combat with other dust players on contested planets within a Corps System.
Ok... So how would I join into one of these battles. When entering the match setup screen. You could see current ships in combat. If your corp is currently involved in a skirmish it will have ships that are capable of having dust players board will appear on screen. |

What that said... it has been discussed. People are evenly divided between liking this idea and outright hating the idea. I'm firmly in the latter camp. Here are my points...
Technical/Gameplay Reasons: - DUST and EVE use two very different physics engines that are not compatible. This makes it virtually impossible for DUST players and ships to operate in the EVE universe the same way other EVE players do. And if you suggest rewriting one of the games engines to match the others I am pretty sure the developers will take you out back and beat you with a baseball bat (i.e. it's easier to make a game from scratch).
- You say EVE players can hire other DUST players to counter any boarding party. This doesn't sit well with many EVE players because they aren't being given and option in the matter. Either trust someone you don't know... or potentially lose your ship. I personally would rather self destruct my ship and make it a total loss for everyone. And a 2 minute match (the duration of the self destruct cycle) makes for very short and unfun round.
- A single Dreadnought or Carrier can be killed by 5 to 6 battleships in the space of 10 minutes. Still a very short period of time by FPS standards.
Role Playing Reasons - I am an immortal demi-god whose brain is hooked into every sensor and switch in the ship. If I detect unwanted stowaways in my ship, why would I NOT seal off, cut off power to, and depressurize the compromised sections of the ship... then open them to space and vent plasma through them? Sure... I lose some crew... but I have several thousand of them on my battleships (tens of thousands on carriers and larger) and they are all a dime a dozen.
- The crew of a Dreadnought is somewhere in the range of several thousand to tens of thousands. Do you really think they are going to sit idly by and let people take over the ship? Especially when the alternative is that their captain will destroy the ship and everyone in it if he/she thinks there is no way repel the attack?
- How do you board a ship designed to withstand antimatter plasma, titanium sabots the size of cars, lasers that burn as hot as the sun, and explosive missiles the size of a 5 story building? Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Really? I thought we vented that room to space a long time ago.
@OP: My armour can withstand a titan's doomsday device. How, exactly, would a boarding party get through it? |
