Two Step (CSM Chap) posted on Twitter today a link to a Business Week article about the CSM http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-04-18/multiplayer-game-eve-online-cultivates-a-most-devoted-following#p1
On page two they refer to POS as Space Houses, and it got me thinking, how do you describe what you do in Eve to people around you?
For instance I once described the Pod system to my girlfriend as i was the inside of an egg, and thats my shell.

Shooting people is easy to explain for me. To describe EVE in general I usually say that you can do what you want, that it is harsh, pure capitalism, without limits or rules and that EVE is not for everyone.

I'd rather explain the Pods to be like the habitats of people in Matrix. I guess even the "average" girlfriend knows that movie.
Usually I don't explain EVE to others, because you can't explain the depth and nuances of the game anyway. They should rather try it and see if it's for them.
When my girlfriend watches me PVE or PVP I can't even really explain what she sees there, in a way that gets her interested. I even tried with Kil2 videos and let him explain, but that also only works for people who already know some aspects of the game.

Pretty much this. The people I work with would never understand, they are all "soap operas are the pinnacle of audio visual entertainment" types.
My friends outside of work, most of them have played EvE at some point anyway.
EvE was brought up at work once, when Vile Rat was murdered and it was all over the news. They were all amazed that I knew about him just because we played the same gameGǪ. Weird people muggles.

I just accepted that Eve will never be our (wifey and I) thing, I will forever be alone in struggles among stars.
Funny thing is that when I started to play Eve my wife saw one of rat's haulers in some mission and she asked "Why are you shooting this vacuum cleaner?". It stuck and now my Eve time is my "vacuum cleaner time" which in fact confuses begeezus out of friends and family who are not aware of real meaning of that phrase and they hear I did it whole night. Whenever a workmate or friend asks I just say it's internet spaceships and leave it at that, though my fianc+¬e knows all about fleets and blowing people up for fun and profit and thinks it's endearing and cute that I enjoy Eve so much. http://chasingtheblueflash.blogspot.com/ My Pirate Blog |

My partner doesn't understand the game at all and she justs let's me get along with it now, but to friends I show them the old learning curve graph and ridicule how wow and other mmos are all safe and easy whilst in eve people will kill you on sight; most react by asking why I would play a game like that.. I often respond with "because I like to be the one upsetting and making people cry" . Eve is no ordinary game it's a life style choice for me. |

I just say that it's a "lower deck Settlers online in space". It's not too eloquent and detailed, but considering some of my friends conversational habits, I'm lucky if I they let me finish even that phrase. |

My friends and family all understand the concept of video games and spaceships.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all. |

People generally tend not to fully understand the mechanics or concept of the game, asking me why I'd like to engage in some hypercapitalist society in my free time.
Most see the game as boring, mainly due to the skill system. Anything that you can't complete in 24 hours is supposedly a waste of time

Good article.
As for explaining, merely saying it's a game I play. Should anyone be interested further I'd try to explain it in a way possible - which by the way is pretty hard since it's a pretty complex universe we got here.
But the use of 'sandbox' is a great word to use.

I found it is too hard to explain to non-gamers and as for the rest they treat EVE like it is some sort of sociopath training program. Are you an Industrialist who uses large amounts of Construction Components? Looking for ways to reduce costs? Then I can help you! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174135 |

A space game evolved from a spreadsheet while the GUI never made it past Excel 95 the ingame gfx is quite good. So is the handling and the depth of the game. Macros were and are a problem. New inventory: Getting better since version 1.2, but what about back and forward buttons? |

Sudoku with graphics. Then instead of showing the game, show a spreadsheet used to "solve" a problem within the game.

My girlfriend kind of understands it, she's played MMOs. The "community" aspect kind of eludes her, however.
My problem is convincing her that my interest is healthy and balanced, as opposed to her ex-boyfriend who played WOW for hours and ignored his kids... |
