New York Times 'No Likey'..........
Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford........these guys need to realize that age is becoming a reality, and need to be phasing in to different kinds of roles at this point. Their presence anymore can make a film seem a bit awkward.
The new Rob Zombie film is getting better reviews. Still, I'm more excited about Blomkamp's "Elysium". There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.-á-á-á-á - Oscar Wilde |

But... but I watched the film. It was awesome
I really don't like Tom Cruise films, but he was damned good at the role. I know I'm sticking my neck on the line by saying this, but Blade Runner was slated when it was first released. This was at the very least better than Prometheus.

Honestly im not surprised.
After seeing the trailers I've been unimpressed with it, and the Will Smith movie coming out too. Elysium is my favourite in the pack for this summer. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

The Will Smith film, Oblivion, and Elysium...........although I'm looking forward to Elysium, all these action/adventure/Dystopic Earth stories are blurring into one. Reminds me of the old thread about similar films being released at nearly the same time.
I don't know, but I'm getting over the whole Dystopia thing. TBH the real world is always much scarier. There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.-á-á-á-á - Oscar Wilde |

I didn't see the trailers, I think that's a key part at play here. I didn't know if it was action or romance, thriller or political spiel.
From that reference point, the story unfolded well, and while my friends who had seen the trailers were waiting for events to happen... this ruined it for them I think. In retrospect my favorite films have all been ones I went into with absolutely no preconceptions, Robocop for one.
The trailers show all of the main plot points unfortunately.

I think dystopia and zombies are just a result of the bad economy we're having now. When times are good you tend to get happier movies, or disaster movies... least thats my view on it.

But at least, after watching the movie you can say "well phew, nice movie. I am sure glad i didn't live there"
In RL it's more "Damn! that was right down the street from me" Or "Oh no, thats where my aunt lives"

Dunno... the general depression in some communities might make it more palatable. OR, if things are so bad, it makes you realise that things for you really arent that bad.
Think about Eastenders or Coronation Street. Theyre so depressing but people love them because it makes them feel better.
Happy stories might make people depressed as their RL doesnt have a happy ending. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Yep, I for one totally despise the "perfect happy families where everyone goes along well and understands and supports each other" movies.
I can attest that half of some of my former patients where there in the first place because they expected their lives with their husbands, family members and kids to be like a chick flick full of drama but a happy reunion in the end where everyone was smiling and kids jumping in the bed as they fought each other with pillows and then the camera zooms out of the house and gives you a view of the perfect little neighborhood/street they live in and then credits appear.

Frankly, I never listen to film reviewers when it comes to films. I believe that these professional film reviewers have fallen far from the average moviegoer, and actually believe themselves to bo some kind of elitest or connoisseur. They know their reviews tend to influence how the public percieves the film. I have seen many films where the reviewers skewered the films, touting them as absolute garbage, and I ended up not watching them in theaters, only to rent them when they did come out and regret not seeing them ont he big screen.
Some sites where they have actual peoples reactions and thoughts on the films are much more helpful. Alot of the times you will find reviews by the average joe who is a fan of that specific genre, and he will tell it to you straight. Reading reviews this way has actually made me want to see a movie that I didnt think would be worth it when I watched the trailer.
That being said, I will probably go watch Oblivion this weekend.
I hope the twist at the end is Tom Cruise's character finds out that he is a clone....of Tom Cruise. Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

Very much looking forward to Elysium. I enjoyed Oblivion, but I think Elysium could possibly turn out to be the best sci-fi released this year. Only saw a flash of Sharlto Copley in the trailer, I enjoyed his performance in D9 immensely and am glad to see him back in another sci-fi film.
I think After Earth might bomb... I'll watch it but I'm cautious given Shymalan's duds these past few years. Even if it's terribad, Will Smith in it should guarantee it'll at least break even at the box office. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

Oblivion wasn't bad, I thought the contrast between the aesthetics of the technology, and living quarters of the main character, and a wasteland earth were quite effective. A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |

Lets face it, after 80 years of films theres not going to be a totally original story. |

One of my favourite authors, Philip Pullman wrote the book that defined my childhood, he put in a disclaimer that he had stolen from a multitude of authors, for the mere act of reading a story generates its own iteration in every mind. All he could do was tell his one, through the lenses of language and story of every book he'd ever read.

You are way too concerned with other people's opinions. Kinda makes you a slave, a ***** to other people's words.. not attempting to be mean. That is just my view of when people do that to themselves.
When going to a movie, or reading a book.. it is best to clear your mind of everything and go along for the ride. How is it even possible to enjoy anything to it's fullest when you got other people's voices bouncing around in your head? Easily jaded.. the experience is going to be worse than it may actually be for you otherwise.
Originality can very much be in how the story is told.. not the story itself. Hercules and Jesus Christ's sagas come to mind, and there are far many more examples. Gilgamesh.. you have any idea how much is ripped from that story over the last 3000 years? I don't see how Tree of Life's story foundation is original.. but how it was told and portrayed, certainly is.
A movie should be how it makes You feel.. not how it makes someone else feel. -áUme-Pro Studios |

Observing the criticism of others is in no way being a 'slave'. EDIT: that would mean being 'forced' to accept any arbitrary criticism by an outside party.
You are just typing words with the assumption that they mean truth.
We can only come to our own truths by reading the opinions of others as balanced with our own beliefs.
