Just a random thought about how much time do you spend on patch speculation.
How much time do you go over every letter of a Dev blog to try and work out what others fail to see?
How much time would you spend discussing with others what items would be best and timeframe for holding?
How much time do you spend pondering over when bacon and waffles will be consodered the best commodities to hold in Eve? |

For every question above: none.
By the time anybody is talking about patch speculation publicly, you can generally assume that you're already late to the party. All of the potentially worthwhile plans are already underway, putting late-comers at a disadvantage. |

32 minutes, 53.2 seconds. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Let me guess 32 mins on bacon and waffles, 53.2 on patch speculation, right? |

A few minutes here and there. Dev Blogs are fine, they sometimes yield nuggets of info.
You might also watch the various "economic" seminars from Fanfest and, when/if another one is published. the QEN's are damn useful (Quarterly Economic Newsletters).
Plan ahead and, as others have already stated, the time to "get in" on any potential market play is before it becomes "big news" on the Forums.

Extremely little. Casual observation at best.
I like to get on-board after noticing the serious speculators going to work but before the news hits mainstream.
Riding coat-tails is fine if you do it early and get out fast.
Also, the later you get on, the smaller the speculations become that you can get away with. Idiots end up flooding when the bubble is about to pop. Ex-Kaalakiota citizen. Ex-Hyasyoda citizen. I do all the reading while on the train to and from work so its a lot of time but not time I have anything better to do with. I think you can invest early or late and the difference is the size of your balls and the reward you get if it pays off. You can invest in a change before ccp has decided to do anything, you can invest in something when ccp has just dropped vague hints, you can invest in something when the dev blogs are out, you can invest when it hits sisi, you can invest the day before the patch. The early the better reward but the luckier you have to be. |

I differ over if you can still profit once the changes are evident. Sure you won't make massive profits, but there are always pockets of markets that haven't caught up. There are areas of the market that are on the up trend for weeks. There are ways to profit. For example I suspect if you buy a couple of battleship blueprints that are getting a big buff and research them up now. You'll be able sell them for a nice profit in the weeks before the patch on contract as people will be doing massive builds of BS once the material costs go up on Sisi... I spend at least four hours a day in front of a twenty monitor setup that enables me to monitor dozens of back-channel information feeds at a time for every tiny scrap of information I can get. Collating and cross-referencing all of this data means that I predict patch changes well in advance, allowing me to get in at the literal ground floor. Mynnna for CSM 8 |

I will of course take this in a humourous tone, otherwise that is a scary thought.

Thanks for the replies (and no it was not an attempt to get information about what you are speculating in).
My random thought was around just how much time people are willing to put into a game, especially around the markets side/patch speculation, that it almost makes it feel like a second job.
For my own part i look over what is out there and and try to extrapolate what will occur, though still in the learning phase over just how vast the game is and what the genral mind set is that drives players.
Cheers for the replies so far. |

Realistically speaking patch speculation literally is just buying in anticipation of future changes, based on whatever info you can get. Usually that's dev posts, devblogs, or the test server, though more esoteric sources exist as well. I mentioned the presentation at PAX over in the Odyssey speculation thread, for example. My earlier post was quite sarcastic - it really doesn't take very much time at all. Mynnna for CSM 8 |

Let me just write that down... though my timing may be too late

Thank you for restoring my faith in the wonderful sarcasm of the Goon nation
I tend to see that devblogs and patch notes are used by the larger players like yourself, more to confirm your own plans are following through nicely or if you may need to tweak them to ensure the outcome you wish for. The majority of us are only catching onto the end of the major movements as opposed to already being in the position to profit from the changes in a greater fashion.
Cheers for the thoughts,

Indeed, looking for tiny tidbits of information.
Here's some free info:
in some regions my buy orders on minerals to fuel my industrial base are not filling at nearly the speed they where 2 months ago. Lowsec sucks for mining, hard like nothing else to start building smaller capital ships and hats have not replaced ISK as the standard currency whats up with that? |

None. That implies a fairly impressive level of arrogance, to believe that you could find something in a dev blog that noone else is going to notice. It's simply about recognizing the potential, before everyone else has jumped on the same bandwagon, or really combining things between different blogs, to come to results that -less- people will have concluded.
Arancar Australis wrote: How much time would you spend discussing with others what items would be best and timeframe for holding?
This is the QUICKEST way to lose money. Outside of a very small group of people, none.

Bacon is overrated, a silly fad that will pass in the next few years, when the salt and calorie obsessed, move on to the next product. I say this as someone who thoroughly enjoys beef, pork, poultry, and fish. (wild game can suck it) Waffles need to stay in the southern united states, so the rest of the world doesn't have to be near them.

I am logged into my market toons during the keynote. Thats about it. This time, i bought isotopes and liquid ozone. Worked out nicely. If you waited for the devblogs and the following discussion... you missed the initial +75% price jump. |
