Does anyone know of some good guides out there for reading the market charts in order to determine proper sell prices for goods and the volume per day that is fulfilled by sell orders? The main issue I have is that both buying and selling a product causes it to show up on the market charts. For products which come solely from players, this isn't too big of a deal, but it matters greatly for products which can also be magically created through NPC PvE kills.
In example, I recently did a test run of Garde I making 10 units. The lowest current sell order at Rens (Heimatar) was hovering around 185,000 to 190,000 and it was trading in around 50-100 units per day. Buyer orders were hovering around 120,000 to 130,000. I was able to manufacture it for 135,000, so I said, 'Sweet, this is a decent return for a newb.' At the same time the 'Avg' as seen in the market graph was 145,000.
So after I made the goods I have been wholly unable to sell them even when I've been the lowest sell order for hours. My hypothesis is that this is a product which NPC missioners sell to buy orders but few people actually buy. That's why the 'Avg' price is much much closer to the buy orders than it is to the sell orders.
Is my theory correct and are there other techniques to reading the market graphs to notice similar trends? |

Garde I are only produced and purchased by players. I don't think I've ever seen one drop as loot, but they may.
As the tech 2 variants are vastly superior, the only people that buy Garde I are those without the skill to use Garde II, or plan to reprocess them. Reprocess buy orders are typically below mineral value.
Not many ships can carry let alone deploy a full flight of sentry drones. Ships that come to mind are Gallente, Guristas (Gallente + Caldari hybrid), and some Amarr drone boats.
You are also trying to sell them in Rens, and Minmatar space is not known for high usage of drones, so I would expect slow movement. Check the daily trade volume graph and list.
As market items go, I find it is a really strange item for you to be experimenting with. |

They sell pretty well in Gallente space. Slower than hobs or hammerheads, but that's to be expected. |

They do drop. Serpentis BSs can drop any and all sentry drones.
But yeah, odd item to start with. |

The daily trade volume graph for my region showed me an item which was trading at 50-100 per day, and the lowest sell order was enough to make a 30% profit compared to the cost of materials. Unfortunately, this turned out to not be the case. What type of things should I be looking for on the graph that would allow me to not make this same mistake again? |

Well, in fairness, T2 producers may buy Garde I's to turn into Garde II's. But they aren't going to pay much more than mineral value for them, else they'd build them themselves.

When viewing the graph you will see a yellow square somewhere on the yellow bar. As a general guide its location on that bar will help indicate whether items are sold more to buy orders or there are more purchases from sell orders.
The nearer it is to the top of the bar the more items are purchased from sell orders (that being the higher price), if that indicator is below half way you can assume that more items are sold to the buy order.

Problem: you're basing your profitability of manufacturing by looking at sell orders of the produced goods.
If the manufacturing is profitable, it is profitable to sell it to buy orders. Any additional profit you might make from a sell order is trading profit, not manufacturing profit. If it's not profitable to manufacture and sell it to buy orders, you're better off setting up buy orders and station trading it. By manufacturing in that scenario you're actually generating negative value from your mineral inputs.
There are of course exceptions: if the supply of a particular manufactured item is so low relative to demand that no producer every sells to buy orders (check the details history - some expensive T2 ships come to mind), then you can consider buy orders as a benchmark for profitability. |
