My preference for gaming is definitely belly up to the table, face to face play. Whether its 28mm miniatures battles, Pen & Paper RPG's, or Stratego. There's nothing like hanging out with like minded people creating a story together. Whether it be a narrative adventure or a theoretical battle between two opposing forces.
I play Eve Online because its convenient and mostly fills that need to be with others in a created world. There's no need to drive anywhere or to schedule meeting with several other people. You can log on and be instantly transported to some faraway place.
But there is something missing with Eve; the human connection maybe, or a tactile interaction with the dice or cards or books or figures, or perhaps just the...IDK
Anyway, would you rather play face to face games? is Eve just a convenient filler for something that you would rather be doing? What, if anything, is not fulfilled by Eve that would be by more traditional games? Slavery is self choosen, only the unclaimed are not free.

I've found online games have become less community orientated and become more gang (corp/guild) mentality over the years.
Reason I play online games, is because people add another dimension to the game as they can be unpredictable, whereas an AI is usually very predictable.

After I made a kid with my wife I didn't really have time for tiny metal tanks or other dice-related activities. You are correct in that EVE fills a void there.
My preferred video games before I got into EVE were things like Thief (best game ever made), Deus Ex, TES, etc... but EVE ruined me and now I only find games with some sort of consequence compelling. For instance, I used to play the **** out of Minecraft but now I only find it remotely interesting if it's on hardcore mode. CCP has no sense of humour. |

So you compare Eve to solo Video games? My OP was sort of about pen and paper or table top games. Thanks for responding, have you played any table top games? do you have friends who play? How old are you?

Only played 1 game of the type (table top) you mentioned. Involved mechwarriors, I won the game and they were a bit taken a back, so they never asked me again. Not that I really minded. |

Dayum... Star Frontiers was the game I started roleplaying with way back in the day. Still have it, too!
I think EVE would make for an interesting tabletop tactical game, like Starfleet battles with autocannons (among other things) Nothing Personal - Just Business...

Sounds like some of you want to go back and play games like Traveler, Space Opera, Space Master, FASA Trek, Mechwarrior. They were table top games with friends, stories, and worlds you felt a part of. EVE is far more the simulation than RPG in truth and harder to immerse within or ply away the real world for. It encourages the meta-game rather than attempting to stamp it out.
I enjoyed PnP RPGs and other games but to be frank they always fell apart or went nuts with time even if we got to play. Computer code handles mechanics better than GMs and dice ever could while remaining impartial, coldly fair, unless manipulated. PC games also play smoother and faster without random pauses to move a mini or draw a map or the need to be the creative force designing adventures and tales. Go play... Less work.
I guess we all hate one another on some level or perhaps there are simply enough assholes who feel no responsibility to care for others around them in a virtual world in modern times that we would rather play a single player game with co-op features than an MMO in the old school sense. You see this in almost every new MMORPG release now. Developers design what people want and will pay for in mass. EVE is an old school dinosaur in that respect which some modern development teams would say should have died long ago.
I honestly think that at this point in my life I prefer PC MMORPGs to their PnP ancestors. They simply do it better and let everyone play together as wanted without the responsibility. I play EVE I guess because its the best MMORPG game with sci fi space ships. I wish it had a real ground component, some story material, and ship crews like STO but frankly STO is such a shallow game with no lasting appeal.

I love EVE, its not used as a time filler for me. Its not just because its not elves and dwarves etc for me, its because the game itself is uniquely different. But at times I do get board (oh ho ho bad pun intended) with online games and go back to good old fashioned D&D nights at mine or a mates with flaggons of ale and sat around a table... As a fan of table top gaming (particularly Warhammer 40k) I would like to see an EVE Online game. It would be quite awesome seeing the glorious ships of EVE put into detailed miniatures made to scale.
Also, we would be able to paint them out own colors, something that CCP will never let us do.
(Pssst, that's your hint to prove me wrong at fanfest CCP) Watch Fred Fred Frederation and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it! |

It's out of print as far as I know, but I've seen copies appear on the fanfest auctions or in the in-convention store they usually put up. So if you know anyone who's going, you could ask them to keep an eye out.
It's a bit ameritrash though GÇö very pretty, but a bit lacking in rule cohesion.

What are the odds that they've finally managed to put out something better than MegaTraveller this time?

I actually really like White wolfs mechanics for P&P WoD, and their world books. Would be great if they would do some Eve source material and adapt the rules.
I've always been meh on Traveler, they just can't seem to get their **** right. First ed was about 30 pages if iirc, which wasn't enough. This latest is a monster isn't it? 600+ pages in the core! wth are they thinking. Who has time to absorb that for a bimonthly or weekly game.

I own a copy of EVE: Conquests. It's not a table top, it's a strategy game with "poker" chips. You build fleets, conquer regions and try to defend them. The game is quite nice for a EVE fan, but nothing too impressive. I'd say it's slightly better than the old "Risk" and connected to the EVE universe.
Here is a good impression of the set-up: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/490477/eve-conquests |

Dark Heresy is an unmitigated disaster, tons of fluff that drifts substantially from the tone of 40k, and a very heavy character generation system. This and the combat rules are very abstract without a lot of room for miniatures. Why would they make a RP game about a miniatures war game and not make miniatures the default for combat? Just seems like a poor marketing choice to me.
*this is more a personal disappointment than any sort of an actual critique. To their credit the game is still selling and they are printing books. So it would appear that they made a good choice from a marketing standpoint. Slavery is self choosen, only the unclaimed are not free.

Signing in as a Warhammer (TFB as well as 40K) player! Unfortunately, since I have been playing for over a decennia, I don't often play or paint anymore. The games do pervade my entire personal life, as most of my friends play or played Warhammer 40.000 and we still enjoy the setting, through books and other media like playing Dawn of War over LAN. |
