I first came to New Eden about five years ago. I played for a while, then I didn't play for a couple of years. Now I'm back.
I never ran DED Complexes back in the day, but as I remember they were in specific systems, and were marked by a beacon. Since I've been back, I've been trying to figure out just what CCP has done with them. My undeerstanding is that complexes are no longeras I just described, or at least, some of them aren't. Instead, they have to be scanned down with the (relaitvely) new exploration tools. I've done that. If you look at DOTLAN'S maps, they'll tell you that, for example, there's a 1/10 complex in Orduin (there may also, from other info, be a 2/10 complex). I went there, and scanned the system down. Found a wormhole and a rogue drone infestation. No complexes.
What I can't figure out is the answer to these questions:
1. Are there any complexes still marked by beacons and "permanent" in a particular system? 2. Do particular complexes found by scanning always appear in the same system, or do they randomly appear... somewhere? 3. If they randomly appear, is there any limit to where they might appear, or do I have to look all over New Eden for a particular complex? 4. I remember people complaining that they would go to a complex and find it already cleaned out by other players. Does that still happen, even with the requirement to scan them down? 5. If complexes still appear in particular systems (like Orduin) do they despawn after someone cleans them out? (This would explain why I couldn't find any complexes there.) 6. If complexes appear randomly, are there particular areas (constellations maybe?) where they are likely to appear? (I'm mostly interesting in hisec at the moment, but if there are different answers for losec or nullsec complexes, that would be good to know.)
Appreciate any help I can get on this. |

Cosmos complexes only. There are still a scant handful of plexes that are permanent and non-beacon that I'm aware of but they are by far the exception and not the rule.

1-4s spawn in high, 4-6 in low, and 6-10 in null. Each pirate faction's sites only spawn where they are the belt rats (with rare exceptions).

Very rarely. 1s and 2s were only recently moved to the scanning system and are still apparently broken in some cases.

After completion, sites despawn and immediately respawn somewhere else. There are no statistical cluster areas I'm aware of (and if anyone else were aware of any they likely wouldn't tell).

Welcome back to Eve. Recently there's been a lot of changes done to the game, especially within the past couple of years.
1 - Only the Cosmos Complexes remain static with beacons showing in the overview along with 'Landmark' beacons (mini Cosmic Anomalies).
2 - Exploration sites = Combat / DED Complexes appear randomly within Constellation or Region, nobody knows for sure.
3 - Certain sites are prone to appear in specific security space - High sec, low sec, null sec and worm sec.
4 - The site will de-spawn if completed (Overseer structure / NPC destroyed), If not then the site will remain for it's regular spawn life = 3 or 4 days. Also if you cloak up in the site after completing it, the site will de-spawn within a couple of minutes.
5 - Yes, they will de-spawn if completed and the site will spawn somewhere else.
6 - Hard to say due to the massive amount of competition in high sec. As for the general security sector of space check these links :

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/DED_Complex_List
Anyway, good luck to you and remember, Evelopedia has some good info. If no info available, try Google search.

Unless I'm terribly mistaken there are still DED 1/10 and 2/10 statics in hisec and 3/10 statics in lowsec. Will confirm this evening unless someone beats me to it. |

Sometimes they brake and don't despawn. I hate that :(
I have the feeling you will find more DED sites in an active lowsec compared to a quiet lowsec region. German blog about smallscale lowsec pvp: http://friendsofharassment.wordpress.com |

All DED complexes were moved to exploration and can only be found via the probing mechanic. When completed, those sites de-spawn and then re-spawn somewhere else.
Of course that statement doesn't apply to sites that are bugged / broken.

There are not. DMC has it entirely right on this one. |

Well, I got it in my head that it might be fun to run a few complexes, but the apparently low likelyhood of even finding one makes me think it's not worth the effort.
Did a COSMOS Level 3 complex today with a friend. We couldn't keep up with the respawns in the first room, so we gave up.
Guess I'll go back to mining. |

DED3s and DED4s are easily found if you learn probing, and I make far better isk/hr even counting dry spells than I would dedicating both my accounts to mining.
Both can be run in a t1 cruiser, though a T3 does them faster which is handy when there is competition for the drop. |
