I have a decision to make, and that is:
See if my computer is worth upgrading and do it. Or just wait a couple months to get a new one. I may do both, but what I really want to know is, can I salvage my system? It is listed to be above minimum requirements but it just doesn't seem to be enough.
It's fairly old.
AMD 64 X2 4800+ dual core (2.4 GHz) 4GB DDR2 Ram nVIDIA 7600 GT OC (256 MB)
I can up the RAM pretty easily The Video card can only go up to a 8800GT due to it being PCIE-1.0
Right now I can play but it's a little glitchy (sometimes a lot glitchy), graphics are turned down to minimum specs, and there are no weapon effects. Really a pain to play. That's why I created this trial account, to test my system before I resubbed.
It would be about $100 to upgrade to 6GB Ram and get an 8800GT.
Do you think this will make much difference at all?
Thanks in advance! |

I'd just wait and build a new one, that's pretty low-spec. He who controls the veld, controls the universe. |

Or I guess alternatively I could just resub, turn my skill training on and station trade....for now |

You can run a PCI-e 2.0 card in a PCI-e 1.0 slot.

I read somewhere that it will fit in 1.1 but not 1.0, but I can't verify that.
Will a 2.0 in a 1.0 slot really even matter? Only half the pins would be connected right? Would it be a measurable difference?
What's my most limiting factor right now, processor, memory or GPU?
Thanks for the replies. |

What's your mobo? Why are you using DDR2 memory? He who controls the veld, controls the universe. |

I dunno my mobo, it was a best buy package deal from a few years ago HP Pavilion a6030n. It came with DDR2 so the 2 more GB I added was DDR2...oh and I'm also running Vista :( |

Ok update. IT's an ECS mobo, and since it's Vista 32 bit, maximum allowed memory is 4GB, yuck. looks like this will be the household non-gaming PC.
Might just get a laptop but after looking at them, it's a LOT less bang for the buck. |

from what ive seen you can use a video card in an older pci-e slot without much issue. the older slots just have less bandwidth so it will likely not be a question of if it will work, but if it can run at full capacity. pci-e slots normally have way more bandwith then graphics cards of the same generation need however i am not familiar with how much bandwidth a 1.0 slot pipes as i didn't get into custom builds un till 2.0 was a standard |

Don't bother upgrading your GPU with anything above GT200/AMD HD4000. Your GPU will be bottlenecked too much by your CPU to warrant such an upgraded. If you really persist on getting a new GPU anyways, only do it if you really know you're going to get the other parts very soon. |

Maybe someone else can confirm this, but I used to have my G13's display show the RAM% usage (back when I only ran one client) and if memory serves it would usually stay below 25% of my 16GB. I'm not sure if this changes based off of video card RAM and other factors, but 4GB might be enough for running Eve.
I also ran Eve on my 8800GT (had that card for years) which worked just fine if the settings are set appropriately. |

Interestingly enough, I have the same computer right next to me. Friend of mine wanted me to fix it but its beyond repair. Personally if you have the money I would build another computer. |
