Let me put it this way..
Picture yourself a n00b NPC pirate. You were given a lowly canister near a gate to protect with your life in case someone came to claim the items inside (You aren't supposed to ask questions recruit.. just protect the stinkin can.. no we won't pick it up .. ever... shh). You are on the job for a few minutes and hear a whoosh as a gigantic battleship warps in blistering with guns. What do you do? You have one gun that does average of 2-10 damage and minimal experience... your buddy right next to you gives you a nod and you engage your targeting computer and go full bore towards the giant.. HE WILL DIE! *cough*
ok.. you get the point. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL a pirate WOULD EVER engage a battleship or even a cruiser EVEN IF HE HAD ANOTHER LOWBIE FRIG WITH HIM. Putting these ships at gates just shows how asanine the AI is in this game... don't get me wrong I love the game but for GODS SAKE make the AI a little more realistic.
If you have a asteroid field that you want to make sure stays clear of player miners.. don't send in the same frickin ships that are insta spawn killed for hours on end.. you just lost an entire fleet to no avail.
IF a group of NPC pirates die they should go get their daddy or mommy to warp in.. i.e. the next bigger ship. If those die then they should either get more ships or just call it quits. No it should not be instantaneous but for gods sake this has to be the most unrealistic npc system i have ever seen. Please make pirates a little more interesting.
thanks :)

This guy has seriously got some good points, EVE to me is like 3d space invaders where NPC pirates are concerned im surprised there is'nt a high score table to put our 3 letter tags in when we are done

I agreet that law enforcement could be a bit smarter sometimes, but if we do as you suppose, we could be ending up with pirates on battleships in .9 systems. This game isnt about realism. Its about fun. Realism is just a spice they throw in. Want complete realism? Go clean your room :P ------------------------

Edited by: Sarf on 01/08/2003 15:55:52 remeber smarter AI = more CPU power with means less responce fromt he system.
IE Smarter pirates = slower game.
having said that yes the system needs changeing. it is not hat hard to keep a counter for each belt where every time a frigate dies it inc by 1000 and 2k for acrusier and 5k for a BS
every min this nuber decrments towards 0. if the normal spawn time comes up and the number is less than a 1000 send then spawn the regular pirates fi the number is greater than 3k then spawn a set 1 size larger, if the number is greater than 6k then spawn a set 2 sizes larger, if the number is greater than 8k then spawn a scout that will flee if locked onto.
ie the pirates bring bigger guns the more of them that are destroyed. you would want to limit it is some way so you don't get 5 BS spawing in a 1.0 system. and after the pirates get to a point they apear to stop since they can't win and start sending a scout once in a while to see if it is still hostile.
should not take tomuch CPU and gives a fair repersentation of smart pirates.

amen.. it's good to see people agree with me. The thing is I am thinking a change of AI like that would require some serious serious effort on CCP's part and not to knock them but they just don't have the man power right now and are concentrating on other things.
Most likely they are thinking if we win them over with content no one will think twice about our retarted pirates.
that also and they are desigining EVE to be more of a pvp universe. which is good in some respects but even in pvp you need goo fleshed out npc's.. perhaps CCP will come to grips with the situation and start placing a little more emphasis on npc interaction... I don't expects leaps and bounds at first but even having pirates "trash talk" you or "give you demands to leave or die" via comms or some such will make it lightyears more realistic... space right now besides the sound of your guns firing is a little.. too.. silent
