I decided to share this because I think itGÇÖs somewhat funny, even though the laugh is on me. In my defense I would like to mention that I was really tired GÇô from a long day at work in conjunction with a side effect from my hay fever medication GǪ a poor excuse, I know.
I recently trained into a Tengu for exploration. Because almost everyone seems to claim how good it is for running missions I decided to try it for missions, too. Ok, for L4s I needed dps GǪ I decided to fit HAMs, BCS and DCU in the lows and despite having doubts I followed some advice and fitted an active tank in the mids. Because of PG issues and to improve performance I switched most mods from T2 to faction and added a Pith C-Type medium shield booster. To test it, I asked my agent for a random mission which brought me to Irjunen (a 0.5 system). I warped to the mission entry GÇô an accelerator gate GÇô and entered the mission. I was in the second room GÇô fighting red crosses and microsleep GÇô when I noticed some white squares on the overview:
GÇ£Strange.GÇ¥, I thought, GÇ£ArenGÇÖt NPCs supposed to appear as red crosses on the overview? Besides, I ran this mission several times before and I canGÇÖt remember seeing this before.GÇ¥
I killed one of the small red crosses and opened fire on another. Then I took a closer look at those white squares.
GÇ£Ah, Catalysts, two flights of five ships each. But what the heck are other players doing in my mission, it makes no sense?GÇ¥, I wondered.
I finished off another NPC and while I still wondered why 10 Catalysts appeared in my mission, my mouse hand GÇô acting on its own because my brain was somewhere else GÇô clicked on a celestial that was more or less right in front of my ship and activated warp, which almost instantly moved my ship to (relative) safety.
GÇ£Ok, what now?GÇ¥, I thought. GÇ£HmmGǪ I should really get some sleep. But on the other hand there is this mission here and itGÇÖs almost finished. Guess it doesnGÇÖt hurt to finish it now and go to sleep after.GÇ¥
So I turned my ship around and warped back to the mission gate where I found 10 Catalysts waiting for me.
GÇ£More Catalysts? Where do all those Catalysts come from? There must be a nest somewhere.GÇ¥ Then it dawned on me. GÇ£Wait! Maybe theyGÇÖre after me. Maybe theyGÇÖre here to gank me?GÇ¥, I thought somewhat puzzled.
The Catalysts turned red almost instantly. Yes! They were there to put an end to my misery:

Kudos for some nice loot.
Note to self: DonGÇÖt fly expensive ships when half asleep or at least get half a brain.

Damage selection. Why would anyone shoot blasters at a Tengu? In addition, I guess these gank alts are not trained to fly a thrasher, so make do with what you got. |

Oh the pain... then again it was a brain dead moment in a travel Loki at a FW disco gate party that I finally got over that gut lurch feeling when I explode. So maybe there is a silver lining in there if you if it means you can laugh off a loss and remember ships are supposed to blow up. Which it seems you have by offering the account here and without claiming it was some kind of failing that the game didn't protect you from yourself.

Well, if you google for Tengu + fitting you will find quite a few people suggesting a very similar fitting. Anyway, I agree that the fit is not very good. It did not do what I intended to achieve and it was too expensive (not) doing that. In hindsight I should have tried my buffer tank idea first (not at my own PC atm but I think it has around 180 EHP or so, before overheating). It would have been much cheaper and considering the mission had NPCs doing EM damage I even might have survivied the gank (gankers were using EM ammo). Then again, maybe not. I will not go back with my other Tengu to try and find out. Edit: At least not without some boosting and some backup. |

Ha I can relate. My excuse is being just new and rather clueless.
I finally got the BC skill and fitted a new shiny. Off to try it out on some mission. I puttered through a few.
Then....white squares?
Hmm wait where am I? I though I was in a mission. Never seen white squares in one. Wait those are other players. What are these people doing.....
BANG!
I was so slow to realize what was going on that I got podded.
It was hilarious and I had a good laugh with the shooters afterwards.

I have to say while your ship's death really isn't that notable (pimp tengus are often a lucrative target), your response to the whole thing is. All too often such happenings result in the victim rageposting here or elsewhere, demanding that CCP do something, or worse, threaten to exact some sort of out-of-game revenge on the perps, to even quitting the game for reals (a sad conclusion all things considered)
But hats off to you, and I hope you get back to normal without much trouble. |

This is one thing, even after reading various accounts that I don't get. I don't get how people can think that they will never lose a ship in this game. Most of my deaths to players while PVEing are due to my own mistakes or when knowingly doing something riskier in low sec. And yeah I just expect that at some point I'll be in the wrong place at the wrong time and just get jumped.
Losing a nice ship does suck of course, but meh whatever it usually just cracks me up. They win and I lose this round. The only thing I find really annoying about it is having to take the time to get and fit another one. It's a pain. |

Well if they gank you, you get kill rights. No need to wardec if you just want to try to get them back. |

Ganking is a single-purpose role for many chars. They're trained specifically to do just that. You might be surprised of the number of chars used to gank are controlled by a person whose mains actually do what you state - wardecs, low-sec piracy, 0.0 guys and the like.

No they are not, while a large percentage may well be in NPC corps there are many gankers that are not. For example Goonswarm and their cohorts gank under the Miniluv flag, on characters that are in those organisations, James' merry little band fly under the CODE(dot) banner, the entire alliance consists of gankers although they do bring unaffiliated friends to the party, and there are many other player corporations and alliances that specialise in the removal of ships goods and implants from the unwary, and more importantly from the game, what they do helps drive the demand for ships and modules, and probably represents the cause of a goodly chunk of market transactions
The fact of the matter is that most gankers are shoot on sight with no Concord interference, their -5 or better /worse (depends who you ask ) security status' and pretty colours in local are there to inform you of this status, and as a badge of dishonour /honour (once again, it depends who you ask).
OP your attitude is excellent, you'll do well here if you stick with it. A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |

I understand that most 'pro' gankers are all in player corporations.
I understand that most of them are quick-flip biomass.
No one will war-dec a gank corp because it is about as useful as wearing a hornets nest as underpants, fun for them and much butt hurt for you.
After the Tags4Sec goes live there will likely be a slowdown on the bio-mass option as you can buy your sec rating back to make sure people don't take off when you drop in local ( and to a lesser extent, police hunting you down )
It is when you want to try and protect against a gank squad and they are all in NPC corps. There is no pro-active option other than to CONCORD yourself and they get a pretty fireworks show. |
