I would like to congratulate CCP on the 10th birthday of Eve.
Very few games have captivated me for so long and kept me coming back for more. I am one of those people who you might consider a bitter vet. I've been playing Eve since the second week of Eve's life and I just wanted to share a few things about Eve that I remember.
When I first saw Eve in the store 10 years ago, I though, why not check out this game. It made many promises that were contrary to everything else out at the time. It seemed like Privateer on a massive scale, in a time period where the only MMOs you saw were games like Everquest. I picked it up, brought it home and was taken by Eve's scale. All these star systems! A huge market! All with players online?! It was a time when you could kill someone in high sec and have a chance to survive by fighting off Concord (Not CCPs intention, see the Yulai Incident video at http://youtu.be/BnjK5EVsIfI) It was something to be seen back in 2003. Eve was buggy back then, and looked so different than it does now. At this period in Eve's life, everyone was either in frigs or indys. Shuttles did not exist. The bugs in Eve were often game breaking. Turrets would get stuck activated, you would be unable to warp, etc. As buggy as it was, there was this feeling there that has kept me coming back for more ever since.
By 2004, many big corps have begun to appear, including a handful of alliances. Eve was starting to stabilize and become a powerhouse of an MMO. It was in 2004 that I began my real PVP experience. I enjoyed the fun of fighting with my first real corp, Quintessential out in Fountain. It was there we fought the Fountain Alliance and many other of you fine folks. It was probably my favorite time in all of Eve. There we stayed for some time, having great fights until our main alliance, Xelas turned on us and we got to enjoy fighting them for a few months before we finally left.
For awhile afterwards, we bounced around a few places while Eve grew and changed. One video of this time really stood out to me. Eve Never Fades (http://youtu.be/e5LdPf2J_hs). It was really an amazing video produced by CCP and it spoke much toward where they were headed.
Over the next few years, Eve changed and grew and changed. These times saw the rise of new alliances and the fall of some of the old ones. Eve continued to push the boundary on what a real online game was supposed to be. Things were fine until the days of the Jita riots and the introduction of Incarna. Incarna, falling well short of promises, became CCP's black eye on a track record of amazing expansions. I got to be there on the front lines, live streaming the event over several days (http://www.twitch.tv/deamosseraph/b/288762783) . In the ending, CCP responded and ultimately made the right choice in respecting what the players wanted.
Some other things I remember over the last 10 years:
The graphics bug that would stick random ship models/station models to your ship until you left the system The introduction of the first T2 items (Miner 2s) and their BPOs The Jove event when a Jovian exploded into everyone's hangar, leaving Epidermis slivers and other assorted goodies for an event. The fun of not everyone in the game being able to warp to zero. The great pirate corps of the past like m0o. All you fine Fountain Alliance folk from back in the day. We had some good pew pew.
Since then, CCP has been on the up and up. The following expansions have been amazing and Eve appears to be on a great track in it's new decade.
In conclusion, I want to thank CCP for the amazing game they have put out and keeping me locked in for the last 10 years. It has been an amazing time and I can't wait to see what you will bring to us in the future.
Feel free to post some of your Eve memories here as well. |

Came to the game early 2004. Haven't been able to leave since. I wasn't ever interested in MMO's back then, but this game blew me away and still does.
Happy Birthday Eve.

2+ years ago I saw the butterfly effect video. It seemed impossible that there was a game so deep. I was very pleasantly surprised.
A very happy 10th birthday EVE! And hopes for 10 more years! |
