Hey,
I remember a CCP dev telling us about how jumping in and out of systems is handled by the game. It's handled by unplugging the pilots' brain from the ship (Leaving it with all Skills 0), switch systems, and replug the pilots' brain in the ship again and fixing all the values.
But more importantly, that same CCP dev hinted that he was working on changing that, ie making a separate server that deals with that part, as it would GREATLY enhance jumping in and out of systems, performance-wise.
Are there any news on that front ?
If you happen to remember/find where that has been said/written, please post the link. I looked for it but didn't find it |

I don't have the link, but I'm pretty sure they mentioned server/instance handoff being greatly optimized in the video where they showed off the new jumpgate effect. |

You can find it by searching through CCP's fanfest presentations from previous years (use their Youtube channel). It was the "Brain in the Box" idea.
Frankly though, CCP announces a lot of stuff that doesn't get done, either because it's not practical or because they find something shinier to do and just abandon it. For example, one or two fanfest ago they showed some prototype concept art of ships models taking actual damage to shields, armour and hull during battle. Also, all the WiS stuff such as UI concept art for Corporate Quarters, and the Wreck Diving prototype. Before that they showed a complete model of WiS including bars, dancers, mini-games etc all working up on a big screen.
I wouldn't get too hung up on what CCP "says" they're going to release SoonGäó "In the age of information, ignorance is a choice." |

When it was talked about during the last FF the dev thought it was a easy fix but when they tore the code apart they decided to recode the whole system from the bottom up. The foundation code will come out with Odyssey then when the brain server stuff gets finished we will see it on TQ. Most likely before winter.
Complicating the issue was it started as a 20% time type project that a lot of the devs who were working on it switched to working on the EVR thing instead.
We should get a dev response to this thread during this down time if it goes smoothly.

The 'brain in a box' concept is one of the things they came up with to get their most base level programming updated and improved.
It's part of deep under the hood mechanics in Eve, and the code is similarly ancient. As such, badly written, undocumented and very complicated. I believe the system that is currently in place to handle all of this is called 'dogma', and is even a nastier piece of work than POSses.
While they are certainly working on it, I doubt we'll hear something about it soon. given how deep this code is buried.
