Idea 1: Taking prisoners in space
How many times have we been forced to kill pods once their ship is destroyed and they are all bubbled, with no gain in it.
Wouldn't be so much better to have the ability to capture the pods?
To get the pods into a special prison center floating in space alliances could build, which will hold those characters for about lets say 7 days before they are released by 'Concord' negotiations or 'Eve of Sisters' humanitary assistance.
If we could effectively take pods for prisoners, there would be the following added benefits to the game:
1) CCP could be paid lets say 200 mil per char for the benefit of getting released immediately. 500mil if that person was a corp director at the time of capture. It will work as another isk sink for CCP, and gain them some extra income. Some people will even buy plexes to get released sooner.
2) Out of the isk paid to ccp, whichever corps runs the prisoner center could get let's say a 20% commision or something, to smooth things and encourage taking prisoners.
3) Prisoner centers could be attacked, adding a new dimension to strategy in game... Wouldn't be fun to be fighting a war, while holding 200 or more enemies out of the fight until they pay the Concord fee? Or asking the enemy for ransom directly, to release any prisoner at will.
4) During the 7 or so days these prisoners can be retained at the prisoner center, they are out of circulation, causing no damage to anybody... The corp mates of those made prisoners would be more than willing to attack the prisoner centers as a priority... Exposing themselves in the process, forced to fight to help their friends. It will certainly increase camaraderie among corp members. For all the time your friends are being held prisoners, there are less pilots available to your corp and alliance.
Prisoner centers could be guarded, armed, etc... Nice fights in space could happen due to this feature of game.
Idea 2: Boarding and capturing enemy ships and characters
Together with this taking prisoners idea, stands the posibility of capturing enemy ships (and the character inside) by having the ability to board enemy ships.
If an enemy ship gets its shields and armor down, once in structure, and as long as you have a group of marines on your cargohold, you should be able to send them to capture that ship, instead of destroying it... That way you will end up with the pod as prisoner AND you gain a free ship.
If the attacked ship happens to have marines of its own onboard, it wouldn't be able to be captured, unless boarded by multiple parties (let's say 5 attacking ships would have to send boarding parties to overrun the ship's marines). It would get way more difficult, considering you would have to be within 2500m from enemy ship in order to send boarding parties. And then stay within that range for another 10 seconds for a marine party to be succesful. If at least 5 ships manage to do this, enemy ships gets captured.
Getting all five ships within boarding range while fighting gets more dangerous and may end in attacking ship dying to defender's close range fire. It also buys time to the attacked ship for help to arrives... It turns then into a two way road and a bet the attackers make, if the attacked ship happens to have marines on board.
Having marines onboard will work for the attacked ship, because if not enough marine groups are sent from different attacking ships, the attacked ship will just get destroyed and then the pod get the chance to warp away (or captured in space, but the ship gets destroyed, not captured).
All this adds new dimensions to the way fights and strategy in game could be conducted... For example, it could work just fine with Dust at one point, providing elite marines to have on board, able to hold up to 10 attacker parties instead of just 5 for regular marines, and then buying more time to the attacked ships for help to arrive.
Dust could have marines transported from one place to another... If they on board when the attack happens, Dust players get a fight inside a ship : )
Thanks for reading.
Cheers!

Too much potential for griefing with this one. It goes beyond the accepted making people not want to play EVE and into the no-man's land of making it so they CAN'T play EVE. |

You mean like capturing pirates in low sec and putting them inside your 0.0 prisons, so they can't harm anybody for a while unless they pay? |

lol i can see the advertising campaign now: "In EVE online every action has a consequence and some action may see you end up in a digital jail cell for 7 days, all this for only $15 per month"
Seriously though, i agree that you should be able to capture people but 7 days is ridiculous.
There should be a change to the bounty hunting system where you can capture the pod of a pirate and you have a limited time (say 30 minutes) to hand them into concord to receive double the bounty. |

No. Think how many people would just unsub rather than spend a week unable to play the game they're paying for. |

No.
Would definitely hurt the game, as people definitely would unsub if unable to play a game they pay for. "War is not measured in terms of who wins or loses, who is right or wrong.-á It is measured in terms of who survives." |

I like the basic idea, perhaps the jail time should be altered.

7 days? lol so you don't think that would be excessive? people already complain about wardec lasting so long keeping folks from playing the way they want to. I had something of the same idea in my dream of eve sessions.. but discounted it for that very reason.
here's an exception I might think it was ok: if what you were holding was implant functionality... which could be returned after payment... but in no case should the ransomer ever know what it is he has hostage.. |

A few corpmates and I manged to keep a pod bubbled for over an hour. Bumping him back in over n over + webs. He got pretty mad... I can't see CCP implementing a mechanic preventing total gameplay. The goal is to get people to log on, not stay logged of waiting for a timer. |

Bad idea. Too much potential for griefing. People pay for the privilege to play, and they wouldn't be able to if they can do nothing than sit there and stare at a wall.
Just think about it: Someone is on a trial account or just has paid for the first month and is barred from gameplay because of someone else taking him prisoner just because he can. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't pay for a second month then.

How do you imprison a clone?
Who would ransom himself out of prison if he can just clone jump in the blink of an eye?
most important:
Whats the difference between ransoming a prisoner and ransoming a tackled pod? I mean, yes, your prison gives u a "safe" mechanism to pay ransom, but that just takes the fun away and is not very sandboxish. |

I like the boarding enemy ships idea, that gets a thumbs up from me.
Problem is, its so easy to create ships etc that if people just "board and hoard" enemy ships eventually nobody will need to buy anything. |
