I'm just going to throw this idea out there: what about if you could use hacking modules to lower the shield of (and eventually capture) sov structures and customs offices (once they are destructible)?
TL;DR: Sov buildings can be destroyed just as they can today by brute force, no changes. But they are also vulnerable to large numbers of hacking modules that can both zap their shields and capture them once in hull. The idea being to offer a secondary way to assault sov structures without necessarily bringing a huge blob.
The idea here is to reduce blobbing somewhat by letting hacking modules drain a little shield from sov structures each cycle. It should be balanced in such a way that a fleet with hacking modules would take down the shield on a sov structure about twice as quickly as one using brute force. A cruiser with many mid slots would be as good as two battleships, but at the expense of low tank and dps. Notice that this would not be chance based like other uses of the hacking module, each cycle of the hacking module WOULD zap some strength from the shield.
After the shield is down, you still have to take the armor down with conventional means, but one could for example make the armor lower and the shield higher to still somewhat prevent blobbing in this part.
After both shield and armor is down, I suggest another new mechanic: the hacking modules should be able to "overcome" the hull in such a way that they eventually capture the building (the more hull the building has the longer it takes). So once a sov building hits hull, you would have the option to A) attack it with brute force to destroy it or B) attack it with hacking modules to capture it and turn it over to your side.
This should not work on POSes.
So what do people think? Would this be a fun mechanic or won't it work at all? |

An expert hacker with like 7-8 hacking modules on the building would be the same as two-three battleships. A covops would have what? 5 modules at most, so he would be the equivalent of maybe one-two battleships. So he has to sit there, totally undefended and uncloaked, for a couple of weeks to wear down the shield. You don't think someone else could maybe, I don't know, drop by and kill him before he makes any significant damage? Bar that, just take a logistics ship and repair back the damage he's done during a couple of days in 10 minutes. |

Dreads do have a purpose and they are rumored to be getting a buff. Hey, don't want to train for a dread whose sole purpose is structure bashing? Then its your problem, not CCP's to correct. |
