I started playing Eve back after release, after spending some time in late beta. I was a carebear to the max, mining, ratting, and so on. After a break of about a year, I came back to Eve a few days ago. Since then I've been hating empire space and mining ops with a passion. So today, I quit the corp I was in (sorry guys! It was fun, but.. I need to boogie), and decided to train up to become a little spoilt b*stard pirate.
Yarr. (practicing)
I've read a few guides here and there, and I feel quite confident that even with limited skills (I can fly a battleship, just not.. fit any large turrets to it :P) I can still do the pirating thing.
So yeah, just figured I'd tell everyone I might just come up and omgwtfransom you. Maybe. /Dale |

Haha well, I never did get into it much, back after release and in beta, everyone saved up $bigbucks to fit themselves into the next best thing after the n00b ship, so I mined Omber (in scary 0.8) until I could get a Navitas, then used that to mine more, until I could buy an Incursus. Been 'ratting ever since then ;)
And Yarrrrrr!@# .. where be me rum! /Dale |

Is it just me or is everyone a pirate these days? Mining is no longer popular, maybe I should start mining.. it may one day be considered "hardcore"

Dunno h00t, for me it's more of a natural progression anyway, considering that back in the day I used to be the "muscle" for the corp I started in -- probably because I spent all my time training up gunnery related skills instead of spaceship command stuff.
My reasoning for it is that frankly, my idea of a game is to have fun. Sitting there blasting the same asteroids over and over is no fun. Lock it, hit F1 on the mining laser, and go watch TV while the indy fills up. Or outside 1.0, sit there while your cruiser slowly fills up, transfer stuff to a sec can. Go watch TV. Rinse, repeat.
It gets boring quickly. Missions, NPC'ing, it's all good, but NPCs are predictable as all hell. I want to have fun, and the only way to get that is to go up against other people, since you never know how they'll react, or what will happen. And the only way to do -that- is to either join a corp in a big alliance so you can do some turf warring (and mine yourself into total boredom after), or head to the land of Yarrrr and try and make a living that way.
Easy choice to make.
I doubt everyone will be a pirate though, I've seen a lot of nooblets who act like one, but they quickly realise that just because I tend to favor frigs doesn't mean they can push me over just like that. For every noobie that becomes a pirate, 2 others quit because they ran out of cash, me thinks. /Dale |

Hi HOot, yo ok ?
Heard about youur fun in Basgerin
Mining can be theraputic on occasion and is ok for a change of pace and for quick money.
The pirates seem to get all the "fun" however and Eve desperatly need game mechanics to cater for bounty hunters and an anti-pirate element, so the "fun" can be played both ways.
0.1 - 0.4 is too restricted by sentry guns and combat here is too often just fruitless attempts to get the target to aggress or local smack.
Piracy may be less of an emotional subject if there was a decent counter, the current system suck sweaty socks.

Just stay in small ships so start out with, frig and cruisers. BS is most of the times overkill any way. A couple of frigs can handle most ships out there on their own, all it takes is some tactics and use of brain.
