Hello everyone!
Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section.
I have an issue with eve online installation or update.
First of all when I tried to download the windows client, the installer downloaded everything but when it tried to install what it downloaded, the installer just froze - the window was unresponsive and I had to kill the process from the task manager (this happens when running the installer both as a local user and as administrator). I got around this issue by finding the downloaded client archives and manually unpacking on a location on disk (a non standard, non-"program files" location .. if it matters).
I've happily played the game for two days, but since yesterday an update has come up and everytime I want to login I have to download the update. The process is the same: the update downloads and when it actually wants to apply the patch the window freezes and that's that (again both as admin or a regular user). I can't apply the previous workaround now because the archive downloaded contains a ".patch" file which I don't know where to put or how to apply.
Did anyone experience any similar issue?
For the record I'm on windows 7 - 64 bit and have the game unpacked in a non standard location.
Thank you in advance! |

Do you by any chance use the "Safe Mode" shortcut to start the client? If you do I recommend you start the client using the normal shortcut to the eve.exe executable.

Hi,
Thank you for the answer.
I have a shortcut that I've made myself so there's no safe mode involved. The problem, I think, is in the updater because even if I download the patch from eveonline.com (exe version that should install without starting the game) I have the same issue, the updater hangs.
I have filed a bug report (id: 117493), don't know if someone else can access it but here's a screenshot showing how the updater hangs:

Hi again!
I've gotten around this issue so I'm posting it here just in case someone else has the same problem.
It's pretty cumbersome but maybe someone else can find a shorter way.
What I did was to reboot into Linux and run the (downloaded exe) updater from there, it happily patch my eve installation just breezing by the screen where the updater froze in windows (I still don't know why that happened). After booting back in windows, when trying to start eve I got an error about some files being corrupted; I then ran the repair.exe utility from the EVE directory which either patched or restored the corrupt files (it's possible that if other people have this problem they might get away with just running repair.exe maybe that will implicitly patch eve too without the reboot into linux and using wine part).
When re-entering eve I got a new notification that another patch was available but this time after in-game download eve just restarted and ran!
So there's that, the bug still exists I just got lucky by stressing the software enough to get it running. Maybe the bug report will help.
Cheers! |

Have you tried using the generic patcher? It can be downloaded from the patches page http://www.eveonline.com/patches/patches.asp
Simply Press Windows or Mac depending on your operating system. The download link for it is listed under "Current Client Version:"

Hi again,
The generic patcher has the exact same behaviour for me.
Anyways there's a new patch out so I had the same issue again.
I can confirm that just running the repair.exe program will update the game to the latest patch. Also as this was the second run of repair.exe everything went a lot faster, I guess it had a cache of all the file hashes...
So there you go ... if you have this issue just run the repair.exe program and that will bring you up to date.
Thank you retrofire for trying to help.
Cheers! |

What part of the install process is it hanging on? My guess would be it's trying to get information about something and failing to do so, and not handling the error in a graceful manner. If you can tell us where in the installer process you were, we can narrow down the potential offenders. Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure |

Hi,
Please see the linked bug report
https://bugs.eveonline.com/mybugreports.asp?Action=View&ID=117493
There's a screenshot attached there that shows the unresponsive window. The screenshot is of the patch process but the installer has the same problem, it downloads everything and when it has to actually unzip what it downloaded or "apply the patch" it hangs.
Thanks for looking into it; personally I'm just fine with using the repair.exe tool. |
