I went Gallente mainly due to the appearance of the ships... But I'm having a hard time trying to figure out whats going to be able to hold my own in a fight. The Electronic Warfare looks interesting how you can control the battle by disabling ships and disrupting things for the other person/enemy.
The few questions I have is... How effective are Electronic Warfare setups?
Is it better to focus more on weapons instead of controling? It seems as if fights would last a lot longer with an Electronic Warfare setup.
I'm looking to solo for a bit to get the hang of the game, so getting a ship thats able to PVE/PVP is important. I just bought an Incursus which seems pretty decent at the moment but I dunno how it will hold up in a random PVP encounter. Like most MMO's I plan on getting ganked every now and again.

Electronic Warfare is godly in 1v1 PvP. Vs. NPCs, it's of limited usefulness.
The Gallente racial specialization for EW is Sensor Dampers, and the Celestis cruiser gets a bonus to Sensor Damper effectiveness.
Sensor Dampers work by reducing the target's max lock range and increasing the time it takes to lock a target. Stack three or four of these modules on top of each other, sit at around 7km with a web and a 20km scrambler, and the target can't do a damned thing about you beating on him (just make sure you have your "keep at distance" set so he doesn't get out of web/scramble range).
ECM jammers, which are the Caldari specialization completely jam the target - no reduced lock range or lock time; the target simply cannot lock anything while jammed. The flip side to this is that ECM jammers are chance based; divide the modified strength of the jammer by the target's sensor strength to determine the percentage chance of jamming. Also, different races use different sensor types, so the choice of which jammer to use becomes critical.

So in general how are PVP encounters in EVE? 1v1 4v1 10v10 ect?
I hear gate camping happens so I'm sure one day I'll be out numbered, and its probably hard to say even the typical PVP fight but most games have a basic feel. Like where I came from (WoW) it was typically 1vs1 then the person who's getting stomped calls in backup. I'm wondering what is going to provide me an easier transition into EVE. Learning curve is interesting and don't mind it, at least I'm not hacking sewer rats!
Just hope I get enough money quickly to get a decent PVP/PVE ship.

PvP can be anywhere from 1v1 to 10v3 to 200v200. -Wrayeth

More often than not its a case of 3+ v 1. At least at most gate camps, which other than low sec mining op madness is about the only pvp in eve.
Only case when its 1v1 is normally by pure chance that someone gates into the system your about to gate out of :| lol, you see each other and either a chase across systems happens, or one of you dies. :)

whatever the odds are in terms of a given battle, best bet that you and your friends will come out ahead if you know your ****znit when it comes to EW :)

True. Or 3 vs. 12. What's really funny is when your gang is the 3 and the 12 hostiles in system won't undock or won't engage you. Happened last night - 3 of us held an entire system of war hostiles hostage just by sitting around in two battleships and one interceptor, occasionally ganking people who did something stupid, like one guy who undocked a thorax all by his lonesome and tried to warp out instead of docking again when he saw we were all right outside the station.
For the first 10 minutes we were there, it was kind of like lemmings rushing into the sea, then they finally got the idea that undocking frigs and cruisers one-by-one was a bad idea. -Wrayeth

Electronic warfare is a potent force multiplier. Of course, it has to have a force to multiply :).
It's not always possible to gain total lockdown. It's doable in 1v1 but not guaranteed, as numbers increase it gets harder still - EW is usually a trade off for other 'useful' mods, so it requires suitable consideration.
Each race has 'traditional' warfare types - gallente sensor dampening, caldari target disrupting, minmatar target painting, and amarr tracking disrupting.
But in truth they don't (generally) stand alone - a mix is best, and TBH finding a 'decent' mix is an elusive prospect.
I find dampeners and jammers work well together - damp them so they take a while to lock, and then jam them - even if the jamming wears off, it'll still take them a while to lock you again, so you get to retry.
But hey, there's an EW guide, where I already mentioned stuff :) (It's on the sticky at the top).
